Robot Carnival

YOU MIGHT LIKE

Memories

Both Robot Carnival and Memories are collections of shorts by various directors based on a common theme (Robots and Memories for each title, respectively). In both titles the directors’ interpretation of the theme ranges from the humorous to the dramatic to the thought-provoking. Because the various sketches are so different, it is hard to unconditionally recommend either of these anime to fans of the other, but if you enjoyed seeing the various interpretations and visual styles directors used in one of these titles, you will find more of the same in the other. Notably, the sketches in Memories are much longer, but lesser in number.

NieA Under 7

YOU MIGHT LIKE

Haibane Renmei

Both NieA_7 and Haibane Renmei have a very different pacing style than most anime. Rather than feeling episodic or contrived, they advance naturally, as events in real life do. Both also depict their protagonist's emotional journey as they deal with loss and difficulty in their lives. Both anime are also very uplifting and can help teach the viewer life lessons. The primary differences between these anime involve the mood of each piece. While both create something of a “bittersweet” atmosphere, NieA_7 mixes in occasional slapstick humor, which, in my opinion, lessens an otherwise great anime. Also, Haibane Renmei is considerably mysterious and supernatural, though both shows have these elements.

Excel Saga

YOU MIGHT LIKE

Dragon Half

Ah, psychotic anime humor, where would I be without you? Maybe somewhere other than in this straightjacket typing an anime recommendation with my teeth. But aside from that, Excel Saga and Dragon Half are both hilarious examples of hyperactive anime comedy. They both share elements common to the genre including a fast pace, self-parody, parody of other anime genres and a healthy degree of randomness. Though Excel Sage tends to move at a faster pace and has a higher amount of randomness, those that appreciate the genre will most likely enjoy both titles.

Blue Submarine No. 6

YOU MIGHT LIKE

Last Exile

While Last Exile tends to be more light-hearted than the somewhat dark adn moody Blue Sub 6, both anime have a very similar feel and execution. Blue Sub's intense CG battles feel very similar to Last Exile's grand scale airship combat and Blue Sub's enigmatic villain lends an air of mystery that can also be found in Last Exile's strange "Guild" race and the floating derelict Exile. Fans of either series will probably enjoy the other.

Blue Submarine No. 6

If you enjoyed the airship combat and mysterious elements of Last Exile, you will find more of the same in Blue Sub 6's aquatic combat and engaging plot. Admittedly, Blue Sub is somewhat darker, shorter and focuses more on the overall story than Last Exile (which frequently digresses to fill in subplots), but both are solid anime. On a minor note, both feature CG for battle scenes, which is a turn-off too some...
