Heroman

Jan 6, 2013

Story
Heroman's story really isn't anything never before seen.  In fact, it lines up with most shounen anime.  Joey, our hero, is a young boy living in the USA.  He gets picked on and bullied and considers himself to be very weak.  Well, he comes into a great power when his self-repaired Heybo is struck by lightening, turning it into a giant robot with the American flag running down its side.  This is Heroman.  Together Joey and Heroman, with the constant support of their friends, are tasked with defending the world from the Skrugg.  The Skrugg are an alien lifeform... Tsuritama

Oct 23, 2012

Story Tsuritama's story is truly absurd.  Absurd in all the right ways, that is.  We are presented with Yuki, a student who transfers school consistently where he eventually lands on Enoshima.  Here he meets Haru who claims he is an alien.  But there is some credit to his story.  Haru holds in his possession a little plastic water gun that, when fired, has the ability to control whomever the water hits.  That's not all.  There's a fish in the ocean that is so powerful that it can control human beings and force them to dance.  Why the fish wants them to dance is... Cencoroll

Oct 7, 2012

Story How to describe Cencoroll's story?  How much can really be described and reviewed from a short movie clocking in barely under thirty minutes?  Luckily, I didn't have to struggle too much.  Atsuya Yuki, the anime's sole writer, designer, animator and director does a very fine job of fitting a large, action packed story into a short, thirty minute segment.  The story begins with protagonist Tetsu chatting to his shapeshifting creature named Cenco.  Shortly into the film another important character is introduced.  Her name is Yuki.  The rest of the story revolves... .hack//SIGN

Oct 5, 2012

Story
.hack//sign is an anime set in the world of a video game called, well, The World.  The series opened up a lot of complex issues and is a real eye opener to what online gaming can do to the mind.  The series itself revolves around the main characters and the characters themselves are crucial to the plot of the series.  In fact, the plot, which is highly confusing, is an afterthought compared to the characters themselves.  The story itself is highly thought out and engaging, to say the least.  Before The World was created a virus called Pluto's Kiss was released by a young... My Last Day

Jul 27, 2011

Story I'm honestly not quite sure what attracted me to this short anime film.  At the time that I watched it, there was no information on A-P for me to go off of so I figured I'd do a quick Google search armed only with my knowledge of the title: My Last Day.  Sounds sentimental, right?  I quickly discovered that this was the "Jesus anime".  Interesting.  Hopefully now you understand why this review is so difficult. It really doesn't matter which religion you subscribe to, if you subscribe to it at all, because there's nothing preachy about My Last Day.  Clocking in... See full review

Alakazam the Great

Jul 25, 2011

Important: It should be noted that I am reviewing the dubbed version which was designed to appeal to American audiences.  It had a heavy marketing campaign here in the U.S so I assume there are noticeable differences to appeal to the American market. The original, Japanese version is called Saiyuki, which I do not have access to. Story Alakazam is based off of the old Chinese legend/novel Journey to the West which followed the Monkey King's exploits as he, quite frankly, journied to the west.  Alakazam the Great stayed relatively faithful to the original legend despite a few tweaks to shorten... Angel Beats!

Jul 25, 2011

Story Angel Beat's presents an unimaginative look into the afterlife and what it means to die with regret.  The main story centers around High School students in Purgatory with flashbacks nearly every episode to students' former lives on Earth.  A lot of neat ideas are presented here, unfortunately Angel Beats! kept everything at an elementary level.  It's because of this rudimentary attitude that keeps the series from outshining other animes that deal with similar topics. Here's the thing: Angel Beats! tries to be clever and fails.  For instance, in Purgatory you can't die... See full review

First Squad: The Moment Of Truth

Jun 17, 2010

Story First Squad impressed me with its bold choice of storytelling.  Fans of the Band of Brothers series will feel a slight sense of déjà vu while watching interviews with veterans and historians throughout the film.  Unfortunately, this works against itself.  At seventy-three minutes long, I felt that the interviews only served as interruptions to distract the viewer from how disjointed the story already felt.  On the flip side, however, the interviews served a critical role in giving an otherwise fictional anime a purpose of truthiness.  If First Squad: The Moment... Eureka Seven

May 19, 2010

Story The story to Eureka Seven wasn't exactly mindblowing, nor did it go above and beyond.  When I first started watching E7 I had no idea what was going on.  A quarter of the way through I actually thought maybe I missed plot-specific information so I ended up searching Google to figure out what a Coralian actually was. Eureka Seven has a nasty habit of bringing something new to the story and then leaving you out to dry.  A word of warning: don't do as I did.  Everything is explained eventually, but personally I didn't like that approach.  I'm not a fan of staring at a screen as...
