Well, I havent really seen any Shoujo-ai, but I've seen a few shows that fall within the drama and romance categories. And looking at the shows you've watched and seemingly liked, a la High School of the Dead, Elfen Lied (I liked both of these shows as well), seems you might like more than just those three categories, eh? Do you like ecchi? High school of the dead and Elfen Lied weren't short on those, for sure, nor were they short of horror/action elements. Anyways, probably the epitome of melodrama, the romance/drama I'd first recommend, is kimi ga nozomu eien. What a tearjerking rollercoaster ride, even if some of those tears come from melodrama! xD

Have you seen Chobits? It has an interesting approach to romance and slice of life, namely because it focuses on the relationship between a young man and his increasingly human-like bot, Chii, as he struggles with moral and philosophical dilemmas like, "What's it mean to be human?".

Oh, heh, I see you've already seen clannad. I wasnt a big fan of the first season, but what a unique tearjerker that second season was! I've never watched another anime that focuses so closely on the relationship between a man and his family, and shows in detail his struggle with ordinary life.

Maid-sama is a decent romcom, if you're up to it. It's shoujo, which I don't usually watch, but what caught my attention is the fact that there is a good balance between a strong male AND female lead. In most shows I've seen, there is either a strong male, or a strong female, and not the other, or if there are both, one of them is an antagonist.

Have you seen Millennium Actress? It's a bit slow and abstract, but its' a classic drama about the life of an aged actress. It's beautifully animated, and has an interesting twist to it.

I might have a few more recs that fall in the romance/drama category, but they generally also have elements of other genres. I'll happily rec them, of course! Anyways, I hope you check out some of these shows, and let me know what you think. :)
