Mizugi no Sekai

Mar 1, 2013

That's my face through the entire thing. Not only is it a one-shot, it's a one-shot about a world where people wear swimsuits. All the time. And this is at school, where they got out of the wet, wet outside, in their swimsuits. It is exceptional: in it's delivery, in the art, the colour, the wetness of it all, dat milk, even when writing on the board it's delicious. Considering that it's swimsuits and nothing else, I'm scoring it appropriately, with 90% of the score going to art, fanservice and swimsuits with the remaining 10% to everything else. Which is nothing.

Me and the Devil Blues

Feb 27, 2013

Story: Legend has it that if you stand at a crossroad at midnight and play your guitar, a man will come up to you and ask for it. If you give it to him, he'll tweak it and you'll play like no other. To be able to play music beyond measure, all it would take is your soul. The same legend goes for Robert Johnson, one of the most legendary bluesman in history. King of the Delta Blues, he is a bonafide legend. Me and the Devil Blues is all about him, from the start of his time with Virginia and the birth of his blues. It's like no other manga I've read and not just because it's one of the few based on the... See full review

Me wo Mite Hanase

May 13, 2012

It's decent enough, with the premise of a merciless beating and some recovery that makes the man who never looks someone in the eye unable to see anyone's eyes. It retains a bit of a creep factor with those eyeless faces but doesn't have a whole lot of suspense. I did like the aftermath of his hospital stay but the ending left me confused. As a one shot, it's worth a quick read.

Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku

Oct 29, 2011

*Review only goes up to chapter 49, the end of the Twilight of the Gods arc. Story: World leaders play mahjong with each other to settle disputes, debts, gamble and to decide the next Pope. That's the basic, bare bones plot, but it gets more ridiculous as it advances. By the time you hit Ragnarok, you think you've seen it all but Twilight of the Gods rears it's head and it just goes off into the ocean. It's silly, it's absurd and it's delightfully fun if you can get past how mad crazy this all is. It's not particularly deep nor should you expect that. Knowing mahjong helps loads but I know squat about it... See full review

Maison Ikkoku

Jan 7, 2011

When someone says Rumiko Takahashi, you may think of Ranma 1/2 or Inuyasha. But instead you should think of her romantic/comedy masterpiece Maison Ikkoku. It's one because of the story it tells, the characters that inhabit it and the feelings that live in them. The story is simple and keeps it's feet planted firmly in reality; real life. It feels real, the events feel real, the emotions feel real, everything feels real and that's the beauty of it. No fantasy, no sci-fi, only characters and a setting that could be seen in the real world and it's through this sense of realism that I really felt for Godai as... See full review
