12 O'Clock Bell Rings

Nov 18, 2012

Cinderella, it has all the makings of it except most of them are skewered and twisted, but not enough to make you forget where it's roots are. Aside from the completely roundabout ending that changes what you just read, it also alters the... "Fairy Godmother", who is more like the classical witch, complete with that awesome witch hat but minus the wart on the nose, green skin (Black and white) and all-around ugliness. But witchiness aside, or with it, the writing is pretty entertaining: Snarky, sarcastic, hardly befets a Disney princess or a truly sympathetic heroine but it goes perfectly with... See full review

20th Century Boys

May 5, 2013

Story: Naoki Urasawa's name on the cover is a seal of quality. You know the series you're about to read is some of the best in the genre, if not the entire damn medium. He's just that good, and 20th Century Boys is no different. A tale of heroism and heroics, childhood dreams and growing up, good vs evil and confrontation, it spans a nice set of volumes and with detail, loads of dialogue and for here, the power of music, driven by T.Rex's 20th Century Boys. While the tale is a long one, it has the Urasawa style of taking it's time. It doesn't rush and for better or worse, it gives you all of what you need... See full review

21st Century Boys

Nov 9, 2013

Not nearly as sublime as the uncannily sublime 20th Century Boys (2 volumes compared to 22 but shush) but a solid follow-up nonetheless on one of the most magnificent and unbelievable works in manga ever. You fall into two camps: The first one, the uncultured heathens who haven't read 20th Century Boys, and the second one, those who have walked the path of Kenji and Friend. First camp, leave this page and begin reading. Second camp, this is the grand finale of the series. It wraps up the saga of Friend, the Kenji Faction and all inbetween. As a conclusion, it does a fine job all things considering and is a... See full review

8.1: Yamada Yuusuke Gekijou

Jul 4, 2020

Like Fear Itself, The Terror or American Horror Story after the third episode in recent seasons, the quality within would vary massively unless it's some sublime work of art that maintains consistent greatness throughout. That ain't happening. But this is more akin to Fear Itself with an episodic anthology rather than a seasonal one that sometimes has continuity. Some are good, like Soccer or Break, both the backends of their respective volumes while others like Picture Mail just seem to cut out in the middle of the story. I know it's short stories, but at least have a conclusion and don't leave us hanging... See full review

A Drifting Life

Oct 1, 2012

A Drifting Life has been at my library for lord knows how long. Sitting there, amongst all the short volumes of more known works and volumes numbering in the teens. Picked it up when it finally dawned on me that it was on my to-read list and immediately started on it when I got home. What ensued wasn't a fast-paced tour-de-force or a high intensity rollercoaster or anything that encompassed speed or particularly excitement. What it was was history, life, the old way and a realistic view on a budding mangaka. This was the age of Tezuka, as the A-P description states. It was an old era, where rental book... Ai Kora

Sep 2, 2013

Story: Ai Kora, a heartwarming tale about a guy who loves parts. I don't just mean an ass-man or a titty fiend, this is a guy with class and expectations, specific taste and a gourmet palette. He wants a specific kind of bust, eyes, legs ass neck waist etc etc. Each part needs to be a specific size and shape and this form of fetish is aptly called "Parts love". The series runs on this theme and is the absolute driving force behind his actions (Lets call him Maeda) and his need to protect and desire for said parts is also a running theme in the chapters within the series. Of course there's ecchi... See full review

Alive!

Nov 11, 2012

At War on Halloween MM I truly don't know where to start with this one. It wasn't outstanding, but it also wasn't bad. Pretty good for a one volume work though, which is a plus. Has a good premise and deals with inmates saved from death, isolation and comfort within said isolation. And a deal with the devil, but that's what you get when some mysterious saviour gives you a choice of death or coming with them. So, good premise and it delivers. After the introduction of the girl, things get dicey and more interesting and once the second half kicks in, it takes a turn for the odd. It's... certainly not what... See full review

Amagami: Love Goes On!

Sep 2, 2013

It's a sweet, adorable tale about the adorable Ai, swimmer and gal who trolls Main Guy in her arc. This is strictly for fans of her and for those who watched the show. It does her justice with some great art to boot. The quick story wouldn't appeal much to other people but if I remember correctly, it's faithful to the show and probably faithful with the length as well. I adored her and the show so this is right up my alley so once again, fans of the show and more specifically Ai, pick it up. Everybody else, watch the show instead of reading about Ai's arc. It'll be better that way and more filling.

Story: You know why I read this? Fanservice. What did I get? Fanservice. About 80% boobs, 20% butts, something I can't entirely approve of because who doesn't like a fine rump? Everybody loves well-rounded butts! Ass man, it's all about the ass. And it's all about the service, because this has a lot of fetish fuel, and to namedrop them all is not only spoilery but time consuming. But there is plenty with some girl on girl action. That bit alone gets it an extra point. And the actual plot? Easy: Floating island where non-humans gather and a guy goes to teach there while meeting all these fine ass honeys who... See full review

Oct 26, 2012

Story: Brutal, gory, remorseless, violent. All part of the underage student killing glory. Student killing, you say? How could a government do such a thing? It's explained, and the series does a good amount of explaining about the program itself and the government that conducts it. Have to give it props for explaining the ones pulling the strings. Dat violence, but I'll tell ya this; it's not all about the violence. On the outside at least. On the inside, they're beaten down, torn apart and ripped to shreds as their minds break to the twisted game they're forced to play. Players go insane, turn... See full review

Bloody Junkie

Sep 9, 2013

Story: A classic tale of guy winding up in a death match battle royale between a number of contestants for a hefty prize bag against his will. If it were a classic plot type/narrative/whosawhat then that would be disturbing but it's a normal guy in an relatively abnormal situation, and because it's a battle royale, blood and violence ensues, fun for all! Especially for the viewers, by which I don't mean you, and by which again is where it throws a nice curveball, as the entire thing is broadcasted online for a paid streaming internet show thing. Story: You know, I can't believe it ended. It left so much open, so many threads untied and loose. So many things missing, so many questions left unanswered and yet, it answered some of the most important of them all, and to it's benefit in a good pace. And why, is this guy talking about the ending right at the start? Because you already know deep down that a dumbass manga like this, chockful of fanservice, ridiculous events, hot-blooded hammy speeches and action, can never, ever, EVER hope to achieve a satisfying conclusion. Story: Framed for mass murder, wanton slaughter and 16 other assorted accounts, Ganta is found guilty and is sentenced to Deadman Wonderland, a jail where the public can watch some fun death games and badass blood fights. Family friendly fun for all! I should also mention that it's a literal wonderland, with the jail smack dab in the center of an amusement park, complete with a ferris wheel. Fuck: Used over 250 times. You can't make this shit up. There's even a 10 rapes per second feature that shows up. And killing your mother and fucking your dad the day after, all in a song's work for DMC. Story: In a nutshell, if you haven't read The Count of Monte Cristo, don't bother with this. To a greater extent, if you haven't watched Gankutsuou, seriously don't bother with this. This is more of a companion piece to the anime Gankutsuou than a stand-alone adaptation that can be read all on it's own, irregardless of it's source material. Nevertheless, a background in the original Alexandre Dumas work and then the anime would be most beneficial. Garden (Yuichi YOKOYAMA)

Jan 11, 2013

So, there are these characters, characters as in these... characters. They go into a garden full of geometrical shapes, rife with abstract patterns, constructions and the ordinary made into something obscure and unusual while keeping in the bounds of what we see today: Trees made of cars, mechanical whozawhats in the form of a piece of nature, all sorts of jazz. If you got any of that, then give it a go. If you're like me and didn't entirely follow that then go read something that is more structured. The only way this is structured is the progression through the garden. There is no end goal and the only... See full review

GE: Good Ending

Feb 22, 2013

Story: I just loved this straight from the first few pages, where the main gets the taste smacked out of his mouth by a rogue tennis ball while playing voyeur on a distant third or so floor with some peeping specs. Comedic moments like these are present throughout, by means of slapstick, comedic dialogue or what have you but never consistent, as interspersed within the pages of this series is some truly heartwrenching moments, tearjerkers, heartwarming and it's a torrent of emotions. Story: I just adore this series. The comedy was spot on between the main protagonists and the side characters in relation to them and each other; how it could be so perverted without overdosing on ecchi; the sad moments that the characters reflect upon and the bright side at the end; how the characters grow and evolve as the series progresses and the characters themselves that help make up the world of Binbougami Ga. Hideout

May 12, 2012

It goes from dramatic reasoning to psycho lunacy and only gets better from there. From a man's good intentions of trying to reconcile with his wife to his intent to commit murder, it starts off a tad dreary and goes to hell as things take a turn for the creepy. It's an unpleasant read, but in a good sense. In the single volume that encompasses it, we get to know enough of the main to feel like he isn't just a cog in the machine to move the plot along. He has depth and his wife is given some padding out, who is simply more than a miffed miss. We know more about how they got there instead of just a... See full review

Higurashi When They Cry: Atonement Arc

Nov 10, 2012

This one's kinda tough to review. It's a pie slice from the Grand Higurashi Pie that goes well with the other slices, even though they have different flavours. There is a hint of flavour of the other arcs but it still has it's own distinct flavour. So, pie. It's a late bloomer in the baking cycle, considering that it's in the mid teens of the series and being Kai, here meaning Answer. Answering questions from earlier on and providing it's own. Lets say you read one or two of the arcs preluding this, that doesn't mean you should dig your fingers into the squishy innards of this one from your half-baked... See full review

Hoozuki no Shima

Jul 23, 2011

When I go for a horror manga that deals with survival, I expect:

1. Suspense

2. A satisfying conclusion

3. Violence and blood (Optional but appreciated, not a dealbreaker)

I for one, am a sucker for suspense. If there's an inkling of it, I'm in and am probably all caught up in it while others are shaking their heads. This has done it for me in the suspense department and it had enough to make me want to continue on in one sitting. Alternating between 4-Koma and the normal... non-4-Koma format, Hozuki-san Chi no Aneki is about a brother, Gorou, who lives with his sister, Haru, (Not related by blood; step siblings?), and has a sister complex. A huge sister complex. BIG. It's what drives most of the jokes, concerning him at least, and how the sister trolls him about it; with him ending up in compromising positions infront of his classmates and peers; him trying to prove his worth and manliness, the usual stuff. It has the requirements for a comedy about a brother/sister duo and it works. The short volume series does work in it's favor... See full review

72, 73ish chapters reviewed Story/Characters: This manga, it isn't just trash, it's super trash. Just about everything about this is trash. Crash on island, islanders immediately hostile, shit hits the fan and keeps on hitting it. Things don't go right often for these people, very rarely. A lot of the time it has a "darkness induced audience apathy" vibe to it, all the rape, sexual harassment, abuse, scumbaggery... it wears you down. Story: I'm a fan of this kind of stuff: Survival, youngsters being tossed into "life or head explosion" situations, high stakes games, head explosions and turning mundane games into high stakes games (Totally different from "high stakes games" on it's own) or turning childhood games into horrifying nightmarish trials. And psychological breakdowns, those are always fun. The manga tackles all of that and for those who are fans of that kind of stuff, it should satisfy despite a high turnover rate, questionable plot developments and in my opinion, somewhat poor reasoning and it was...
