Uzumaki: Spiral into Horror

Oct 27, 2012

Story: I will never look at spirals the same way again, and never did after reading this. Or snails. Or hospitals. Quite frankly, this is some disturbing shit. It doesn't simply create a shock scare or two, you see it gradually going to shit, the transformations of the spiral, the horror that is right there infront of you. It doesn't shirk on that front and that just makes it even more chilling.

Bone-chilling, as some of the chapters are simply nightmarish. Transformation body horrors first and foremost, with some blood mixed in for good measure and a dose of Vitamin Die. Too many chapters to list... See full review

Love in Hell

Aug 17, 2013

Story: Sinner goes to hell, meets up with a cute demon whose his... escort through hell. Or coordinator. Leader? She guides him and helps him get rid of the debt he has for his sins through sadistic torture, mutilation and bodily harm because at the end of the day, he revives it. So lets say for an example that he, and I'm just laying down an example, he gets his nuts crushed like grapes and his dick smashed with a mace. He'll have a new johnson and pair before the day is done and thus, black comedy and titties ensue. Wait, titties? Where did titties come from? What does titties have to do with hell? Why... Gal Cleaning!

Oct 13, 2019

The thing about this series is that you can split it into two parts: Cleaning Post Chapter 8 The cleaning, that is some good shit holmes. Like, this homie be cleaning and shit and using all these cleaning techniques and shit and it's all factual and shit, that's some good shit holmes. Like the gal don't know shit about cleaning and this guy knows all the shit about cleaning and he cleans for her and their typical dynamic is pretty sweet. And there's like a cleaning tip per chapter, that's the good shit. And then you get to Chapter 8.5, which is the beginning of this show becoming a total dumpster fire... See full review

Cage of Eden

Feb 13, 2013

Story: You know, I can't believe it ended. It left so much open, so many threads untied and loose. So many things missing, so many questions left unanswered and yet, it answered some of the most important of them all, and to it's benefit in a good pace. And why, is this guy talking about the ending right at the start? Because you already know deep down that a dumbass manga like this, chockful of fanservice, ridiculous events, hot-blooded hammy speeches and action, can never, ever, EVER hope to achieve a satisfying conclusion. It's the nature of things. But damn a nice plot it doth threads. Kids on a... See full review

Deadman Wonderland

Jan 26, 2014

Story: Framed for mass murder, wanton slaughter and 16 other assorted accounts, Ganta is found guilty and is sentenced to Deadman Wonderland, a jail where the public can watch some fun death games and badass blood fights. Family friendly fun for all! I should also mention that it's a literal wonderland, with the jail smack dab in the center of an amusement park, complete with a ferris wheel. That's how they roll, and they're rolling in a MacLauren, one of those super fast race cars; it's that good. The concept of jail for convicts and those with super powers who also happen to be convicts is awesome and... See full review

20th Century Boys

May 5, 2013

Story: Naoki Urasawa's name on the cover is a seal of quality. You know the series you're about to read is some of the best in the genre, if not the entire damn medium. He's just that good, and 20th Century Boys is no different. A tale of heroism and heroics, childhood dreams and growing up, good vs evil and confrontation, it spans a nice set of volumes and with detail, loads of dialogue and for here, the power of music, driven by T.Rex's 20th Century Boys. While the tale is a long one, it has the Urasawa style of taking it's time. It doesn't rush and for better or worse, it gives you all of what you need... See full review

Battle Royale

Oct 26, 2012

Story: Brutal, gory, remorseless, violent. All part of the underage student killing glory. Student killing, you say? How could a government do such a thing? It's explained, and the series does a good amount of explaining about the program itself and the government that conducts it. Have to give it props for explaining the ones pulling the strings. Dat violence, but I'll tell ya this; it's not all about the violence. On the outside at least. On the inside, they're beaten down, torn apart and ripped to shreds as their minds break to the twisted game they're forced to play. Players go insane, turn... See full review

Hideout

May 12, 2012

It goes from dramatic reasoning to psycho lunacy and only gets better from there. From a man's good intentions of trying to reconcile with his wife to his intent to commit murder, it starts off a tad dreary and goes to hell as things take a turn for the creepy. It's an unpleasant read, but in a good sense. In the single volume that encompasses it, we get to know enough of the main to feel like he isn't just a cog in the machine to move the plot along. He has depth and his wife is given some padding out, who is simply more than a miffed miss. We know more about how they got there instead of just a... See full review

You know, I really wish that for all the works made by Naoki Urasawa that are reviewed, they would simply say: "Made by Naoki Urasawa. Stop reading this and go read/watch -manga/anime being reviewed-". But alas, sometimes one thinks they need more of a reason than the series being completely awesome or the creator being as equally awesome. Then again, it wouldn't fill the reader's noggin with praise for said works. And then again, they shouldn't need to be told that he's awesome. They should know it. Oh well, lets begin. To start off, it uses an arc that appears in Astroboy and makes it it's own... See full review

72, 73ish chapters reviewed Story/Characters: This manga, it isn't just trash, it's super trash. Just about everything about this is trash. Crash on island, islanders immediately hostile, shit hits the fan and keeps on hitting it. Things don't go right often for these people, very rarely. A lot of the time it has a "darkness induced audience apathy" vibe to it, all the rape, sexual harassment, abuse, scumbaggery... it wears you down. It overshadows any good they do, any good intentions of our heroes, a lot of the small victories they get. It happens to some of the best girls, some of the more... See full review

Revenge Game

Sep 28, 2015

Story: I am a complete sucker for revenge games. Or survival games. Or stuff where you have to kill your own friends and classmates or know what? Call it Battle Royale. This story, is mainly the first one with a dash of the third, minus the wanton brutal butchering. But I digress, I forgot the point I'm making. Probably a- oh, right, "Revenge Game". Nevermind. As the title implies, revenge happens. In a "game" format. But it's mostly revenge, where a bullied rich boy who was bullied gets his revenge on his bullies. Hence, the title. There are no "Saw" or "Hostel"... See full review

Gankutsuou

Nov 30, 2013

Story: In a nutshell, if you haven't read The Count of Monte Cristo, don't bother with this. To a greater extent, if you haven't watched Gankutsuou, seriously don't bother with this. This is more of a companion piece to the anime Gankutsuou than a stand-alone adaptation that can be read all on it's own, irregardless of it's source material. Nevertheless, a background in the original Alexandre Dumas work and then the anime would be most beneficial. Once more before I mention it again a few more times: Do not step into this without prior knowledge of the series! So, why did I say all that crap? Simply... See full review

Bloody Junkie

Sep 9, 2013

Story: A classic tale of guy winding up in a death match battle royale between a number of contestants for a hefty prize bag against his will. If it were a classic plot type/narrative/whosawhat then that would be disturbing but it's a normal guy in an relatively abnormal situation, and because it's a battle royale, blood and violence ensues, fun for all! Especially for the viewers, by which I don't mean you, and by which again is where it throws a nice curveball, as the entire thing is broadcasted online for a paid streaming internet show thing. Good Luck Girl!

Aug 7, 2013

Story: I just adore this series. The comedy was spot on between the main protagonists and the side characters in relation to them and each other; how it could be so perverted without overdosing on ecchi; the sad moments that the characters reflect upon and the bright side at the end; how the characters grow and evolve as the series progresses and the characters themselves that help make up the world of Binbougami Ga. Sometimes it's antics involving the main plot of Momiji trying to get Sakura's fortune energy, other times it's about side characters and going deeper into what made Sakura into what she is... Kamisama no Iutoori (Akeji FUJIMURA)

Jun 14, 2013

Story: I'm a fan of this kind of stuff: Survival, youngsters being tossed into "life or head explosion" situations, high stakes games, head explosions and turning mundane games into high stakes games (Totally different from "high stakes games" on it's own) or turning childhood games into horrifying nightmarish trials. And psychological breakdowns, those are always fun. The manga tackles all of that and for those who are fans of that kind of stuff, it should satisfy despite a high turnover rate, questionable plot developments and in my opinion, somewhat poor reasoning and it was... And he's protected by two hot oni chicks. Sorry, 10,000,000 yen and an extra year of life for his heart to be eaten at the end of that year. His delicious heart needs to mature and all. It took me a minute to type the summary of this review: The fuck? You see it in the title: Abstract. This is some real- man, I can't even begin to explain it to you. You probably wouldn't get it. "2D panels translating into anal bleeding 3D", you say? "What else is there?" your peeble, feeble mind asks. God, it's so much more than that. Hoozuki no Shima

Jul 23, 2011

When I go for a horror manga that deals with survival, I expect:

1. Suspense

2. A satisfying conclusion

3. Violence and blood (Optional but appreciated, not a dealbreaker)

I for one, am a sucker for suspense. If there's an inkling of it, I'm in and am probably all caught up in it while others are shaking their heads. This has done it for me in the suspense department and it had enough to make me want to continue on in one sitting. You got your mystery to go along with it; the disappearances, the lack of trust and a sense of something deeper. There's always a... See full review

Secret Santa 2013 Review Story: Cutting out the filler, it's about a guy who has super eyes but a weak body so he gets the help of a sexy ghost whose previous life was a swordswoman of a school of badass swordmanship, "Fist to Face Sakura Sword Style". She helps him become a kendo practicioner by using her methods and techniques and his super eyes. That's the story in a nutshell and it goes through plenty of training, angst at being too weak, all the shit that any main character who has to rise to become the top has to face, except it cuts out most of said shit and as a whole feels like that... 21st Century Boys

Nov 9, 2013

Not nearly as sublime as the uncannily sublime 20th Century Boys (2 volumes compared to 22 but shush) but a solid follow-up nonetheless on one of the most magnificent and unbelievable works in manga ever. You fall into two camps: The first one, the uncultured heathens who haven't read 20th Century Boys, and the second one, those who have walked the path of Kenji and Friend. First camp, leave this page and begin reading. Second camp, this is the grand finale of the series. It wraps up the saga of Friend, the Kenji Faction and all inbetween. Mizugi no Sekai

Mar 1, 2013

That's my face through the entire thing. Not only is it a one-shot, it's a one-shot about a world where people wear swimsuits. All the time. And this is at school, where they got out of the wet, wet outside, in their swimsuits. It is exceptional: in it's delivery, in the art, the colour, the wetness of it all, dat milk, even when writing on the board it's delicious. Considering that it's swimsuits and nothing else, I'm scoring it appropriately, with 90% of the score going to art, fanservice and swimsuits with the remaining 10% to everything else. Which is nothing.

GE: Good Ending

Feb 22, 2013

Story: I just loved this straight from the first few pages, where the main gets the taste smacked out of his mouth by a rogue tennis ball while playing voyeur on a distant third or so floor with some peeping specs. Comedic moments like these are present throughout, by means of slapstick, comedic dialogue or what have you but never consistent, as interspersed within the pages of this series is some truly heartwrenching moments, tearjerkers, heartwarming and it's a torrent of emotions. Story: I'm going to be writing this review in a manner that suits it and to make sure you know what I mean, here's some statistics from the first 100 chapters on two words: Rape: Used over 250 times. Fuck: Used over 250 times. You can't make this shit up. There's even a 10 rapes per second feature that shows up. And killing your mother and fucking your dad the day after, all in a song's work for DMC. Things like that, killing and rape, it makes mention of it in spades and considering it's split between Krauser and Negishi makes it even more impressive. One page has fuck 20 times on it! The Drifting Classroom

Oct 24, 2012

Story: Survival Horror, one of my favorite genres, and this one does it justice. It's a tale about an elementary school, like the one you went to, except they deliver bread to it. But one day, it gets sent to a wasteland devoid of life. And the kids, teachers and that delivery man, are stuck there. What ensues is the usual by human standards: panic, hysteria, denial and the usual, except for a twist or two that elevates the shock and disturbing factors. The series is quite good on being disturbing, and not just because it's focusing on little kids. They're human still, and think like humans and being in a... See full review

Alternating between 4-Koma and the normal... non-4-Koma format, Hozuki-san Chi no Aneki is about a brother, Gorou, who lives with his sister, Haru, (Not related by blood; step siblings?), and has a sister complex. A huge sister complex. BIG. It's what drives most of the jokes, concerning him at least, and how the sister trolls him about it; with him ending up in compromising positions infront of his classmates and peers; him trying to prove his worth and manliness, the usual stuff. It has the requirements for a comedy about a brother/sister duo and it works. The short volume series does work in it's favor... See full review

Maison Ikkoku

Jan 7, 2011

When someone says Rumiko Takahashi, you may think of Ranma 1/2 or Inuyasha. But instead you should think of her romantic/comedy masterpiece Maison Ikkoku. It's one because of the story it tells, the characters that inhabit it and the feelings that live in them. The story is simple and keeps it's feet planted firmly in reality; real life. It feels real, the events feel real, the emotions feel real, everything feels real and that's the beauty of it. No fantasy, no sci-fi, only characters and a setting that could be seen in the real world and it's through this sense of realism that I really felt for Godai as... See full review

8.1: Yamada Yuusuke Gekijou

Jul 4, 2020

Like Fear Itself, The Terror or American Horror Story after the third episode in recent seasons, the quality within would vary massively unless it's some sublime work of art that maintains consistent greatness throughout. That ain't happening. But this is more akin to Fear Itself with an episodic anthology rather than a seasonal one that sometimes has continuity. Some are good, like Soccer or Break, both the backends of their respective volumes while others like Picture Mail just seem to cut out in the middle of the story. Story of Dat Ass: Alright, before I begin anything, let me draw your attention once again to dat ass. That right there is how you make a cover. You know it's a guy, but you have to admire an ass that fine. If the manga would keep up with such fine ass-ness then it would be perfect. Unfortunately, it does not. But the art makes me appreciate that this guy makes an amazing girl, and that this is surprisingly not an awkward boner fest despite fully knowing that it's a dude throughout. The point here is that it's a great cover and that you should totally judge a book by its cover. This perfectly sound and... See full review
