Story: I will always underestimate series and occasionally overestimate some that I think would be so-so or crap and turn out to be complete shit. This one I underestimated. Psychic powers and space opera is a good combination, don't ya know, and what helps out is the society it's based in, which is all about control and being big brother to the fleshies. Then there's your plucky band of psychic rebels who fight the power because the power would pretty much brutally eradicate them from existence. This doesn't do it justice as it gets to be pretty grand as the show moves along and throws enough nut punches throughout that you stop getting complacent and stop thinking that people have plot armor.

And let me tell you, this shit throws a fuckton of heavy hits. Makes you feel for the characters and even for the villain from time to time. It makes you care and for a space opera, that's a massive plus in its favor. I cared about them, I wanted them to succeed, and sometimes I wanted some douchebags to get punched in the face. Sometimes I regret thinking like that. That's some good characterization.

And the story overall, damn excellent. Sometimes predictable but it doesn't lessen the impact of the hits. A good many of them can make it a bit dusty, or simply tear up and that's some good investment. What helps is that absolutely no one is safe. Named characters give up the ghost and they die. A lot. It takes balls to do what it does and it has cahones to spare. As it forges on, it gets more feels and more drama until it explodes into a mass effect singularity, where the end product is a delicious, filling roast. You know what the gravy would be, but the sides compliment it and you can't deny it not being a wondrous space opera.

Animation: A mixed bag but CGI is generally cheese. You know it's there, it looks out of place and sometimes it's alright but most often it's crud. I thought it was crud for the most part and with some of the explosions was definitely lacking in both ghetto 360p and 720p which is wizz bang POW ZAMO in quality. It looks alright in 360p but personally, I thought that aside from the aformentioned explosions and CGI, looked boners in 720p.

Promitting the usage of the term boners for a show that lacks a surprisingly amount of bonerisms with literally zero instances of fanservice unless you're of the "shounen-ai" persuasion and can see all the amounts of ho-yay in it. There is a lot of it. And they look DAMN GOOD. The eyes, the hair, the sheer fabulousness of a wonderfully coifed doo or how guys would look so good that you could mistake them for girls and some of the gents look faaaaabulous~ as in their hair is absolutely amaziballs.

Some great character looks overall and the scenery, muchos excelliente. It looks good for it's age and the art style is splendid. Animation wise, it looks kinda cheap at times but some big flashes and giant lasers fix that right up. Art > Animation but nevertheless, great overall.

Sound: There is a dub but nuts to that, and you know why? Norio fucking Wakamoto as the narrator. Immediately you know subs beat dubs without listening to any of them with that knowledge. Otherwise, great work around. And the music? Tops. Later episodes got me thinking that I would miss the themes once the show ended. Musical pieces throughout is as sci-fi as it gets but without getting into superbly overblown, grand monster tracks.

Characters: I already talked a bit about the characters earlier so this will be short. Nice development on the youngsters, likable oldsters, villain you can appreciate and some characters start off crud but turn into stars. Some douches redeem themselves and a shitton are woobies. Few psychopaths and you have the entire fiesta of mixables. Diversive and great, mix well before serving and consume before they expire.

Overall: Straight up, I loved this. I didn't think much of it being a space opera and as it turns out, it was a bloody good series. No filler episodes, none of that big titty, booty shakin' fanservice boner episodes, all psychic space opera goodness. This is damn good popcorn chomping viewings and well worth checking out. Nothing goes perfectly for the protagonists so there will always be tension and each battle is hard fought.
