Upotte!!

May 6, 2012

After all my years of anime watching I've found one anime that rises above the rest and shines brightly even in a season with such titles such as Fate/Zero, Lupin III: A woman named Fujiko, Eureka AO and Sakamichi no Apollon. This anime is such a unique telling of a story that is so essential the anime universe, that it will surely  praised and remembered for generations to come. Indeed this anime will revolutionize the anime industry and become the quintessential anime, that every other anime is compared to. I've watched almost over 1000 titles of anime and none compares to this anime. This is the... See full review

Another

Apr 19, 2012

I had really high hopes for this anime when it first came out, because it looked like the first good horror/thriller/mystery/suspense/psychological anime that took itself seriously that has come out in a long time. I mean Mirrai Nikki was around, but man that anime was silly as hell. The first episode was very good and set this up quite well but the rest of this anime didn't quite meet my expectations. *Spoilers ahead* Story
Okay so the story of this anime is that theres a curse in their town that kills kids in the 3rd 9th grade class, because of some thing that happened 30 years ago and ofcourse no... See full review

The Garden of Words

May 31, 2013

I've been looking forward to Garden of Wal- I mean Words for quite some time now. By the now quite famous Makoto Shinkai and his studio CoMix Wave. I've always enjoyed the visual aspect of his films and this certainly doesn't disappoint. However it is quite lacking in other departments. Story- To sum it up shortly the story is about the relationship between a younger boy and an older women. While it is somewhat different from the average romance drama, it still has it's problems. If anything I think the story suffers most from the movies rather short run time. The film is only about 46 minutes long... See full review

Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing

May 1, 2012

Wow.... this is probably the most disapointing sequel since Darker than Black s2... wth did they do to the series? Yeah the animation is slightly better and the colours are more vibrant but its all in vain due to the terrible loli fanservice. Honestly I don't think anyone can watch this anime without feeling like a pedophile. Needless to say the review is going to be biased, because for some bizzare reason I had my expectations high for this. Story- Most of the time the story takes a backseat to pointless slice of life scenes like cooking shit and playing floor hockey or watching little girls change... See full review

Furiko

Sep 14, 2012

I don't think any anime has made be cry so suddenly and without warning... Literally 3 minutes before I'm completely normal and 3 mintures later I'm sobbing. This animation is only 3 minutes long, yet it manages to tell a story better than most anime or movies. Its really it's hard to explain in words the effects of this anime, its only 3 minutes so just watch it and see for yourself.

California Crisis: Gun Salvo

Nov 29, 2012

Is it me or does this site just really hate older anime >_> Anyway this review is for a very underwatched 80's OVA known as California Crisis. As you would guess the OVA is set in California, America and contains quite a lot of pop cultural references from that time such as Rocky.  Story- So the story follows this guy and girl as they're trying to run away from some secret government agency that is looking for this ball that the girl happened to pick up.Thats about it without spoiling the end... whch honestly wasn't that good. Its kind of a prolonged chase scene, but a really fun one... See full review

Salamander

Apr 29, 2012

Story- Typical good guys(Gradians) v.s evil colony/hive mind type aliens(Bacterians). Some decent twists here and there, but nothing noteworthy. This series is based off the Gradius and Salamander game series. Which are oldschool 80's schoot em' ups. Animation- Actually pretty decent. Lots of great actions scenes with many ships, lasers and explosions. and the boss battles were particularly well animated. The characters looked pretty standard for 80's animes though and the ship designs were pretty boring too. The bosses looked badass though, especially the last one. Sound-The only memorable themes are... See full review

Sakura Diaries

Nov 29, 2012

Well this is a strange little OVA... well not very little considering its 12 episodes, which is the length of a regular TV series nowadays, Just goes to show how things have changed I guess. Anyway this is pretty much an ecchi romcom, much like the ecchi romcoms of modern anime, except it was made in the 90's which means its better right? Well not really =/ Story- So the story follows the life of a College reject and country boy named Touma Inaba, who has his dreams of getting into a good university crushed when he fails his entrance exams and has to enter a cram school. During his stay in the... See full review

A Letter to Momo

Nov 20, 2012

Let me start off by saying that I was quite disapointed with this anime movie by Production I.G. Maybe I was just expecting something differen't or actually original or unique, but instead I got "A letter to Momo". Now by no means is this a bad film it is just very unoriginal and also extremely slow-paced. Did I mention that this movie took 7 years to make?  Story- The story is very basic, it follows the protagonist Momo who has moved to an island with her mother from Tokyo. When she arrives on the island she encounters certain "supernatural presences" that I will not spoil... See full review

Sci-fi Harry

Aug 31, 2012

So I felt like checking out something different and this seemed like a good choice to me. Something kind of dark and fairly serious with some decent characters. Also an anime that didn't take place in Japan for once, was pretty refreshing. Story- So the story centres around our main character an American highschool student named Harry. Harry gets bullied a lot in school, because hes quiet and weird/awkward. One day however he finds out he has psychic powers and the story progresses and escalates from there. If there is a dub in your own language I suggest you watch that, because this anime has... See full review

Blade of the Phantom Master

May 11, 2012

I stumbled on this somewhat obscure title randomly and it led me to discover the manga, which is one of the best I've read in in a long time. It was written by a Korean individual, but published by a Japanese company, so for the purpose of this review I'll be calling the comic a manga to avoid confusion, even though manhwa would seem more appropiate given the subject matter.  After reading a good portion of the manga I decided to go back and watch the movie just to see if they managed to keep things more or less the same. I was surprised by how I noticed little things in the art and storytelling that... See full review

Nineteen 19

May 1, 2012

Story- What the...? A main character of a romance anime thats not a teenager and its not even set in a school? Well there are flashbacks of his school life, but yeah this romance is about a young guy (try to guess his age lol) and a girl that hes liked since junior high. He also works as a waiter and has two friends and a homolust boss... but thats not really significant. The end is also a bit of a twist, whether in a good or bad way is up to you to decide. Animation- Pretty standard for the 90's. Fairly realistic char designs and even a little symbolism thrown in once in a while.
Sound- Even... See full review

Bride of Deimos

May 1, 2012

Story- The story isn't the most interesting story in the world. Its a mystery with some supernarutal elements, but it works for this kind of anime. I think the OVA uses the 1 episode run time to its advantage well, but it could have elaborated a bit more on the supernatural side. Animation- Characters have standard Josei/Shoujo char designs for that era, which look pretty nice. Nothing stood out as overly impressive though. There are parts where the colouring is changed in order to change the atmosphere, which I thought was pretty effective. Sound- Pretty forgettable, theres a cool 80's synth tune that... Sin: The Movie

May 13, 2013

I came into to this with very very low, expectations, mostly because of some screenshots I had seen with some of the worst cg in anime I had seen and considering this was made in the later 90's I can't blame them that much. Aside from the cg though I was actually pretty pleased with this anime.  Story- The story takes place in a futuristic cyberpunk setting and follows the exploits of HardCORPS (great name btw), an elite police force tasked with the job to eliminate the crime in the city, most notably the fucking zombie mutant things running around murdering and converting people into their... JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012)

Apr 6, 2013

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure? What is this odd thing that everyone seems to be crazy about nowadays? An anime thats based on a manga that was written in the 80's it must be some ridiculously boring shit right? This couldn't possibly be as great or entetaining as people are hyping it to be right? WRONG... okay well maybe not in all cases. Honestly I guess it depends, on your mindset and willingness to suspend your disbelief and watch something for the sake of enjoyment. I guess the question comes down to, do you actually enjoy watching anime? Is it something that genuinely brings joy to your life? If the answer... See full review

Windy Tales

Apr 2, 2013

Windy Tales is a slice of life series. A REAL slice of life series, as in it's actually realistic things that happen to the characters. The artsyle is very strange and it will put off many people, but those that are willing to give this title a chance will be rewarded. Story- First of all, this is an actual slice of life show, so don't expect the characters to be super quirky and and to have all this interesting well timed dialogue. This is a very realistic show and realistic things happen. If a dad facing a middle age crisis goes out and buys a motorcycle he will crash the bike and break his leg... See full review

Guardian of Darkness

Mar 31, 2013

Takegami, a somewhat decent action OVA title from the 90's. I guess you could say it was a mecha title, but not really since it's more of a transformation into this demon mecha type thing...  Story- The story follows our hero Koichi who has to fight off these dragons that are incarnation of ancient Japanese gods or something like that. He is granted the power of transforming into this badass red demon mecha thing in order to fight the dragons. There are a lot of references to Japanese Shitoism and I'm not going to pretend like I understood most of them. There is als oa girl name Terumi who has... See full review

PSYCHO-PASS

Mar 27, 2013

Fair warning, like most reviews in existence my review is quite biased and I was influeced by the "hype" factor concerning this particular anime. Quite a few factors influenced my hype for this title including the production studio (Production I.G), the setting (futuristic cyberpunk) and the writer (Mr. Urobutcher himself). Pretty much what I was expecting was Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex season 3, with awesome plot twists. What I got... wasn't completely unexpected, but at the same time I couldn't help but feel disappointed with it.  Story- As I mentioned before the... See full review

Usagi-chan de Cue!!

Mar 10, 2013

This is a short ecchi OVA about a bunny girl named Mimika who just happens to fall into a harem situation with our main character Haru. Theres nudity and fanservice galore and also a few fights here and there. Story- So the story starts off with Inaba, a rough delinquent girl who happens to be fighting on the roof (yes he have some very smart characters here), while she manages to defeat her opponent she falls off the roof in order to save this rabbit and somehow ends up "merging" with it... yeah this is never properly explained. Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01

Mar 10, 2013

I'll try to keep my review short, because this is only about a 40 min OVA, but basically its a good old 80's sci-fi OVA without all that much context behind it. Story and Characters- So the story focuses on this kid named Kouji who just happens to find  this military mecha suit prototype called Madox-01. He somehow finds himself piloting this thing, but at the same time needs to rendezvous with a girl he likes. So he races against the clock to meet up this girl while trying to avoid the military which is trying to reclaim the suit with their own suit (well I guess its more of an Exo-skeleton armor... Papillon Rose

Mar 8, 2013

So this is the sequel to Lingire warrior Papillon Rose, which was a one episode OVA and I guess at some point someone thought they should make this into a 6 episode OVA... both of these titles are ofcourse awful.  Story- So this story takes place 1 year after the events of the first OVA and somehow the main characters have all lost their memories. So now Tsubomi (Papillon Rose) must band her previous allies together to fight the evil minions of Night Queen and her henchwomen monster of the week style. There are some pretty crappy plot twists later on and aside from that it's very predictable and very... See full review

Wolf Children

Mar 3, 2013

I wasn't really sure what exactly to expect when I heard of this anime. A mother taking care of werewolf children? Sounded pretty damn silly to me, but I gotta say I was surprised in a good way with this film. This movie comes to us from the director of works such as Summer wars and Girl Who Leapt through time, so I had somewhat high expectations and this movie doesn't disappoint.  Story- The story centres around Hana a young women who happens to fall in love with a wolf who can somehow turn into a human and procreate with humans. So Burn Up! Is a one episode OVA that spawned two 12 episode T.V series and another 4 episode OVA. If I had to compare it to anything it would be Bubble Gum Crisis also by AIC, excpet not quite as good. It's pretty much your basic cops OVA, with a bit of violence and fanservice here and there.  Story- So the story is pretty much about these female cops in the future who have to defeat this evil organization and rescue their friend... yeah not the most origianl story there ever was. The story dragged a little in the middle, but the actiony parts were quite engaging.  Animation- Easily the... See full review

Hells Angels

Feb 25, 2013

So after looking for this anime seemingly for years I finally found it. So did it live up to my expectations? Actually kind of yeah, althought the animation was a little shaky at parts and even though I felt like the run-time could have easily been cut in half, I still really enjoyed this a lot. Story- So without getting into spoilers, theres quite a few biblical references in this movie and it's not very subtle about it either, they are quite overt. the main premise is a girl named Linne has "died" and been sent to Hell, which apparently is an Academy for halloween themed... Feb 20, 2013

So we got a good ol' sci-fi 90's OVA's with minimal plot and fairly forgettable action and characters produced by Teoi animation and... J.C Staff? Don't they usually only do crappy schoom romcoms? well apparantly they did some crappy sci-fi OVA's as well and one of them is this little gem? Well not really, I'm sure all 9 (currently) other people whov'e actually seen this will agree that there was a reason it has been forgotten. Berserk

Dec 2, 2012

I think there is one anime for everyone that "converted" them into an anime fan. An anime that is so good that is just takes your preconceptions of what anime is and just crumbles them into dust. An anime that just blows your brain into so many pieces that by the time your finished recovering all of the pieces, you'll feel like a completely different person. An anime that seems to peer into your soul and make you question your own existence. This anime put me through every emotion on the spectrum and then some. Kizuoibito

Well... this I'm not really sure what to say about this 5 episode OVA called Kizuoibito (Wounded Man). Pretty much its Kazuo Koike worst anime adaption. Its not as interesting or visually appealing as Crying Freeman, nor is it as gut wrenchingly hilarious (if you have a weird sense of humor like me) as Madbull 34. Well I guess a part of that has to do with the fact that its his earliest OVA dating back to 1985.  Story- So the story follows the main character Keiske who is trying to get revenge for his dead highschool sweet heart. Well being the lazy individual that I am I didn't want to watch all 26 episodes of Panzer Wolrd Galient, instead I decieded to settle for this OVA series that covers the series in 2, 1 hour OVAs.... seems legit. The 3rd OVA is a special side story... but not really. Story- So the stroy is that theres this kid named Jojo(hehe) who has to save the kingdom from this bad guy named Mardar. Theres these awesome centaur themed mechs, but the main character uses a more robotic/knight looking one to my disapointment. So yeah Its prety much just Jojo trying to save his kingdom with some minimal plot twists... See full review

Babel II OVA

Nov 29, 2012

I'm gonna keep this short. I honestly can't say much about this anime. The plot is unoriginal the characters are boring and the animation is below standard for me. If you REALLY want a show about people with psychic powers then maybe you could consider watching this, but honestly this OVA felt really pointless. The main character barely has any trouble defeating his enemies and theres some "attempt" at doing a plot twist, but it doesn't really work and there is also a light romantic sub-plot which doesn't ever get enough development. Maybe the T.V series of this are much better and this anime... See full review
