The Dagger of Kamui

Jun 20, 2012

Being a fan of the good old hack n' slash anime ninja movies, I had to check this title out. I wasn't really expecting, much I didn't really get all that much either. Story- Okay so the story is about this guy named Jiro and he is framed for killing his own parents. Well except he did kill his own father, but he didn't realize it was his father. So he vows to take revenge on the one responsible, a monk looking dude by the name of Tenkai. So theres Iga and Koga ninja clans in this (surprise surprise) and they're duking it out and what not, but our boy Jiro is a lone ninja and he has a special dagger (guess... See full review

Cyber City Oedo 808

May 22, 2012

Can't believe theres not a review for this here, anyway this is one of my personal favourites, beacuse it just has a lot of what I like it anime and ofcourse Yoshiaki Kawajiri characters and violence. Story- Okay so the story is set in the future and it revolves around these 3 criminals who have VERY low chance for parole, but they have some unique skills. So what happens is that if these guys do what the government tells them to, they can reduce the amount of years on their sentence. There are 3 episodes and each focuses on one of our main characters. I really enjoyed the first 2 eps, but I though the... See full review

E.Y.E.S. of Mars

May 21, 2012

This move is a sci-fi, psychic power anime movie and it is... very boring. I'm not gonna lie, it might have been because of the emotionness english dub or just because of the stale story but... I did not find this very enjoyable. Story- Okay without going into spoilers, its a kind of post-apocalyptic world that isn't very well illustrated and its about these children who have psychic powers and protect the enviroment! Yeah thats it. Animation- Its pretty bad, even for that era... its not very good at all. Nothing stood out for me. Sound- Nothing stood out for me at all... Characters- I can barely... The Skull Man

May 12, 2012

I was really surpised there wasn't already a review for this, considering the studio that made it and the premise for the show. It kind of feels like what Darker than Black might have been if it took a more subtle and darker(pun intended) tone... well until the end. In a way I guess the ending was fitting for this series, but it also felt a little too silly/ideal Story- The story is mystery at heart, but there is a lot of great action and good char development that you can expect from a Bones series. The main premise is a reporter named Hayato is investigation a series of murders that seem to all connect... See full review

Blade of the Phantom Master

May 11, 2012

I stumbled on this somewhat obscure title randomly and it led me to discover the manga, which is one of the best I've read in in a long time. It was written by a Korean individual, but published by a Japanese company, so for the purpose of this review I'll be calling the comic a manga to avoid confusion, even though manhwa would seem more appropiate given the subject matter.  After reading a good portion of the manga I decided to go back and watch the movie just to see if they managed to keep things more or less the same. I was surprised by how I noticed little things in the art and storytelling that... See full review

Birdy the Mighty

May 10, 2012

So I watched the T.V series, before this and when I found out that Yoshiaki Kawajiri had created the original OVA, I knew I had to check it out. I was expecting a lot more blood, guts gore, nudity and his trademark char designs, but what I got was much of the same as the T.V series. Story- Aside from a few characters added in the T.V series, just about the exact same story. I don't really want to spoil, it though but if you've seen the T.V series you know the circumstances that Tsutomu and Birdy find themselves in. There is deffinetly lack of char development that the T.V series had and I believe this OVA... See full review

Roujin Z

May 8, 2012

This anime is one of those rare gems that you find occasionally, that once you start you know has the potential to be very good. Its even more fulfiling to find out by the end of one of these that your expectations have not only been met, but exceeded. With a unique premise and a definite direction this is by far one of the best stand-alone OVA's I've ever seen. Also I'd like to note that this feels much more like a movie than an OVA and rightfully so considering the running time of about 1h20m. Story- So your probably wondering what could be so unique and interesting about this anime that sets it apart... See full review

Upotte!!

May 6, 2012

After all my years of anime watching I've found one anime that rises above the rest and shines brightly even in a season with such titles such as Fate/Zero, Lupin III: A woman named Fujiko, Eureka AO and Sakamichi no Apollon. This anime is such a unique telling of a story that is so essential the anime universe, that it will surely  praised and remembered for generations to come. Indeed this anime will revolutionize the anime industry and become the quintessential anime, that every other anime is compared to. I've watched almost over 1000 titles of anime and none compares to this anime. This is the... See full review

The Dog of Flanders Movie

May 5, 2012

This movie is very depressing, I would say on the same level as Grave of the fireflies, if not more so. So if you don't want to be depressed and potentially cry buckets I highly suggest avoiding this. So does this movie have any worth aside from being an emotional tear jerker? Honestly, not much... its very apparant that the movie is trying to elicit a specific reaction from you and without that its just a cliche sad story, with some light religious themes thrown in. *Spoilers Ahead* Story- So theres a kid and his parents died... aww thats already pretty sad right? Wrong! It gets even worse and we... See full review

Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing

May 1, 2012

Wow.... this is probably the most disapointing sequel since Darker than Black s2... wth did they do to the series? Yeah the animation is slightly better and the colours are more vibrant but its all in vain due to the terrible loli fanservice. Honestly I don't think anyone can watch this anime without feeling like a pedophile. Needless to say the review is going to be biased, because for some bizzare reason I had my expectations high for this. Story- Most of the time the story takes a backseat to pointless slice of life scenes like cooking shit and playing floor hockey or watching little girls change... See full review

Nineteen 19

May 1, 2012

Story- What the...? A main character of a romance anime thats not a teenager and its not even set in a school? Well there are flashbacks of his school life, but yeah this romance is about a young guy (try to guess his age lol) and a girl that hes liked since junior high. He also works as a waiter and has two friends and a homolust boss... but thats not really significant. The end is also a bit of a twist, whether in a good or bad way is up to you to decide. Animation- Pretty standard for the 90's. Fairly realistic char designs and even a little symbolism thrown in once in a while.
Sound- Even... See full review

Bobby's In Deep

May 1, 2012

Story- Very slowpaced, slice of life story about a guy and his motorcycle and the girl that likes him... theres really no other way to descibe this. The ending is also quite depressing. Animation- Really quite poor even for that time, I think the only impressive scene is the last one and thats only because theres some actual highspeed motion going on. Most of the animationis very slow moving... like the story. Sound- I don't even remember a single tune from this... really forgettable and Bobby's voice in the jap dub... sounds like he has mild autism. Characters- The characters consist of Bobby, his... Bride of Deimos

May 1, 2012

Story- The story isn't the most interesting story in the world. Its a mystery with some supernarutal elements, but it works for this kind of anime. I think the OVA uses the 1 episode run time to its advantage well, but it could have elaborated a bit more on the supernatural side. Animation- Characters have standard Josei/Shoujo char designs for that era, which look pretty nice. Nothing stood out as overly impressive though. There are parts where the colouring is changed in order to change the atmosphere, which I thought was pretty effective. Sound- Pretty forgettable, theres a cool 80's synth tune that... Salamander

Apr 29, 2012

Story- Typical good guys(Gradians) v.s evil colony/hive mind type aliens(Bacterians). Some decent twists here and there, but nothing noteworthy. This series is based off the Gradius and Salamander game series. Which are oldschool 80's schoot em' ups. Animation- Actually pretty decent. Lots of great actions scenes with many ships, lasers and explosions. and the boss battles were particularly well animated. The characters looked pretty standard for 80's animes though and the ship designs were pretty boring too. The bosses looked badass though, especially the last one. Sound-The only memorable themes are... See full review

Another

Apr 19, 2012

I had really high hopes for this anime when it first came out, because it looked like the first good horror/thriller/mystery/suspense/psychological anime that took itself seriously that has come out in a long time. I mean Mirrai Nikki was around, but man that anime was silly as hell. The first episode was very good and set this up quite well but the rest of this anime didn't quite meet my expectations. *Spoilers ahead* Story
Okay so the story of this anime is that theres a curse in their town that kills kids in the 3rd 9th grade class, because of some thing that happened 30 years ago and ofcourse no... See full review

Maris the Chojo

Mar 18, 2012

Story- The story is about Maris a superpowered space police woman who is trying to make a name for herself and her shape shifting fox pet thing. Her misson in this OVA is to rescue a prince whos been captured by another super powered girl and she believes she can get rich off him. Her past is quite sad and the end of OVA doesn't help... Theres some references to pop-culuture and her other works in the OVA if you look which is pretty cool and the whole "suit that restricts her strength" thing was neat. Animation- Not terrible but not amazing either ive seen better animation in the 80's. The... See full review

Goku: Midnight Eye

Mar 17, 2012

Story- Okay the story is pretty much this, Goku the main char, is a detective and people that he knows are commiting scuicide. He thinks that they are actually murders. He has an eye that can analyze things and makes him immune to the powers of the one who is making people commit scuicide. Apparantly it can also control technology but I don't really see much of that in this OVA So his lover Yoko, is fatally injured (or atleast put in a coma) due to the organization that the person who is making people commit scuicide is from(the leader used some bees that are attracted to human breathe) ... Gyo

Mar 5, 2012

Okay this anime has been getting a lot of hate, and I can understand why and I agree the manga was much better. But I'm atleast happy that the adaption was made and finally one of Ito's works actually got an anime adpation. I thought the adaption was.... entertaining at least, despite its many flaws. On to the review! *Spoilers ahead* Story- The story is changed from the manga. Kaori is now the main character and Tadashi is the one who gets infected. idk what they tried to gain from this but I don't think it worked... I guess its nice to see something different from the manga, but I think what... See full review

Redline

Mar 3, 2012

Story- Okay so Redline doesn't have the best story ever, but some of the sub-plots are somewhat interesting, but unfortunanatly are kind of underdeveloped. Like who was the dude with the pink car pimping two girls at once? We can only assume a role-model for JP and the whole thing with Funky boy and the Robo world government... Yeah this anime didn't really need such a convoluted plot a nice simple race would have been fine, but I don't think it really takes anything away from the show. Maybe setting it up for more movies/OVAs in the future for explanation =/ unlikely but possible Animation- This is... See full review
