JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012)

Apr 6, 2013

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure? What is this odd thing that everyone seems to be crazy about nowadays? An anime thats based on a manga that was written in the 80's it must be some ridiculously boring shit right? This couldn't possibly be as great or entetaining as people are hyping it to be right? WRONG... okay well maybe not in all cases. Honestly I guess it depends, on your mindset and willingness to suspend your disbelief and watch something for the sake of enjoyment. I guess the question comes down to, do you actually enjoy watching anime? Is it something that genuinely brings joy to your life? If the answer... See full review

Berserk

Dec 2, 2012

I think there is one anime for everyone that "converted" them into an anime fan. An anime that is so good that is just takes your preconceptions of what anime is and just crumbles them into dust. An anime that just blows your brain into so many pieces that by the time your finished recovering all of the pieces, you'll feel like a completely different person. An anime that seems to peer into your soul and make you question your own existence. This anime put me through every emotion on the spectrum and then some. Berserk is less of an anime for me and more of a rite of passage, from a lonely angsty... See full review

Redline

Mar 3, 2012

Story- Okay so Redline doesn't have the best story ever, but some of the sub-plots are somewhat interesting, but unfortunanatly are kind of underdeveloped. Like who was the dude with the pink car pimping two girls at once? We can only assume a role-model for JP and the whole thing with Funky boy and the Robo world government... Yeah this anime didn't really need such a convoluted plot a nice simple race would have been fine, but I don't think it really takes anything away from the show. Maybe setting it up for more movies/OVAs in the future for explanation =/ unlikely but possible Animation- This is... See full review

Furiko

Sep 14, 2012

I don't think any anime has made be cry so suddenly and without warning... Literally 3 minutes before I'm completely normal and 3 mintures later I'm sobbing. This animation is only 3 minutes long, yet it manages to tell a story better than most anime or movies. Its really it's hard to explain in words the effects of this anime, its only 3 minutes so just watch it and see for yourself.

Souten Kouro

Nov 18, 2012

*WARNING* This anime contains exessive amounts of violence and blood, if you cannot stand those kinds of things, this anime is defintely not for you. Also this anime is very heavy on manliness. As such sits near the top of a short list of anime that I would consider Manime or manly anime. This usually means things such as manly admiration, manly tears and ofcourse minimal to nonexistent female presence. Okay now to the review. Story- Souten Kouro or "Beyond the Heavens" has quite a unique setting in being set in China during the Han Dynasty and being looesely based on the events of... See full review

Roujin Z

May 8, 2012

This anime is one of those rare gems that you find occasionally, that once you start you know has the potential to be very good. Its even more fulfiling to find out by the end of one of these that your expectations have not only been met, but exceeded. With a unique premise and a definite direction this is by far one of the best stand-alone OVA's I've ever seen. Also I'd like to note that this feels much more like a movie than an OVA and rightfully so considering the running time of about 1h20m. Story- So your probably wondering what could be so unique and interesting about this anime that sets it apart... See full review

Wolf Children

Mar 3, 2013

I wasn't really sure what exactly to expect when I heard of this anime. A mother taking care of werewolf children? Sounded pretty damn silly to me, but I gotta say I was surprised in a good way with this film. This movie comes to us from the director of works such as Summer wars and Girl Who Leapt through time, so I had somewhat high expectations and this movie doesn't disappoint.  Story- The story centres around Hana a young women who happens to fall in love with a wolf who can somehow turn into a human and procreate with humans. Now this is where your suspension of disbelief comes in, at first... See full review

Tokyo Tribe 2

Jul 9, 2012

Okay so to start this anime is not for everyone... and by not for everyone I mean thats probably only going to appeal to a select few individuals which include myself. So this anime is pretty much about the Yakuza life. So don't expect any highschool girls with mini skirts and moe bullshit. The OST conists mostly of rap music and its got that "urban" feeling to it that you can also find in some other anime like Michiko to Hatchin and Samurai Champloo. Story- So the story primarity focuses on the two characters Mera and Kai. its pretty much a revenge tale and also somewhat a tale of redemption... See full review

Cyber City Oedo 808

May 22, 2012

Can't believe theres not a review for this here, anyway this is one of my personal favourites, beacuse it just has a lot of what I like it anime and ofcourse Yoshiaki Kawajiri characters and violence. Story- Okay so the story is set in the future and it revolves around these 3 criminals who have VERY low chance for parole, but they have some unique skills. So what happens is that if these guys do what the government tells them to, they can reduce the amount of years on their sentence. There are 3 episodes and each focuses on one of our main characters. I really enjoyed the first 2 eps, but I though the... See full review

Blade of the Phantom Master

May 11, 2012

I stumbled on this somewhat obscure title randomly and it led me to discover the manga, which is one of the best I've read in in a long time. It was written by a Korean individual, but published by a Japanese company, so for the purpose of this review I'll be calling the comic a manga to avoid confusion, even though manhwa would seem more appropiate given the subject matter.  After reading a good portion of the manga I decided to go back and watch the movie just to see if they managed to keep things more or less the same. I was surprised by how I noticed little things in the art and storytelling that... See full review

Nineteen 19

May 1, 2012

Story- What the...? A main character of a romance anime thats not a teenager and its not even set in a school? Well there are flashbacks of his school life, but yeah this romance is about a young guy (try to guess his age lol) and a girl that hes liked since junior high. He also works as a waiter and has two friends and a homolust boss... but thats not really significant. The end is also a bit of a twist, whether in a good or bad way is up to you to decide. Animation- Pretty standard for the 90's. Fairly realistic char designs and even a little symbolism thrown in once in a while.
Sound- Even... See full review

Hells Angels

Feb 25, 2013

So after looking for this anime seemingly for years I finally found it. So did it live up to my expectations? Actually kind of yeah, althought the animation was a little shaky at parts and even though I felt like the run-time could have easily been cut in half, I still really enjoyed this a lot. Story- So without getting into spoilers, theres quite a few biblical references in this movie and it's not very subtle about it either, they are quite overt. the main premise is a girl named Linne has "died" and been sent to Hell, which apparently is an Academy for halloween themed... The Skull Man

May 12, 2012

I was really surpised there wasn't already a review for this, considering the studio that made it and the premise for the show. It kind of feels like what Darker than Black might have been if it took a more subtle and darker(pun intended) tone... well until the end. In a way I guess the ending was fitting for this series, but it also felt a little too silly/ideal Story- The story is mystery at heart, but there is a lot of great action and good char development that you can expect from a Bones series. The main premise is a reporter named Hayato is investigation a series of murders that seem to all connect... See full review

The Garden of Words

May 31, 2013

I've been looking forward to Garden of Wal- I mean Words for quite some time now. By the now quite famous Makoto Shinkai and his studio CoMix Wave. I've always enjoyed the visual aspect of his films and this certainly doesn't disappoint. However it is quite lacking in other departments. Story- To sum it up shortly the story is about the relationship between a younger boy and an older women. While it is somewhat different from the average romance drama, it still has it's problems. If anything I think the story suffers most from the movies rather short run time. The film is only about 46 minutes long... See full review

Windy Tales

Apr 2, 2013

Windy Tales is a slice of life series. A REAL slice of life series, as in it's actually realistic things that happen to the characters. The artsyle is very strange and it will put off many people, but those that are willing to give this title a chance will be rewarded. Story- First of all, this is an actual slice of life show, so don't expect the characters to be super quirky and and to have all this interesting well timed dialogue. This is a very realistic show and realistic things happen. If a dad facing a middle age crisis goes out and buys a motorcycle he will crash the bike and break his leg... See full review

Sci-fi Harry

Aug 31, 2012

So I felt like checking out something different and this seemed like a good choice to me. Something kind of dark and fairly serious with some decent characters. Also an anime that didn't take place in Japan for once, was pretty refreshing. Story- So the story centres around our main character an American highschool student named Harry. Harry gets bullied a lot in school, because hes quiet and weird/awkward. One day however he finds out he has psychic powers and the story progresses and escalates from there. If there is a dub in your own language I suggest you watch that, because this anime has... See full review

Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas - Meiou Shinwa

Aug 28, 2012

Now warning in advanced, I was a pretty big Saint Seiya (or as they called it here, Knights of the Zodiac) fan back when it was airing in Canada. It was like the dream anime for a kid, along with stuff like DBZ. So when this OVA started airing I was immedietly interested and began watching, if for nothing atleast nostalgic purposes. I was pleasently surprised with this prequel. Story- So this OVA is based on a manga and is actually the prequel for the original Saint Seiya series. The main story is pretty much a good v.s evil tale and they make it all the more easier to identify who is evil and who... See full review

The Dagger of Kamui

Jun 20, 2012

Being a fan of the good old hack n' slash anime ninja movies, I had to check this title out. I wasn't really expecting, much I didn't really get all that much either. Story- Okay so the story is about this guy named Jiro and he is framed for killing his own parents. Well except he did kill his own father, but he didn't realize it was his father. So he vows to take revenge on the one responsible, a monk looking dude by the name of Tenkai. So theres Iga and Koga ninja clans in this (surprise surprise) and they're duking it out and what not, but our boy Jiro is a lone ninja and he has a special dagger (guess... See full review

The Dog of Flanders Movie

May 5, 2012

This movie is very depressing, I would say on the same level as Grave of the fireflies, if not more so. So if you don't want to be depressed and potentially cry buckets I highly suggest avoiding this. So does this movie have any worth aside from being an emotional tear jerker? Honestly, not much... its very apparant that the movie is trying to elicit a specific reaction from you and without that its just a cliche sad story, with some light religious themes thrown in. *Spoilers Ahead* Story- So theres a kid and his parents died... aww thats already pretty sad right? Wrong! It gets even worse and we... See full review

Bride of Deimos

May 1, 2012

Story- The story isn't the most interesting story in the world. Its a mystery with some supernarutal elements, but it works for this kind of anime. I think the OVA uses the 1 episode run time to its advantage well, but it could have elaborated a bit more on the supernatural side. Animation- Characters have standard Josei/Shoujo char designs for that era, which look pretty nice. Nothing stood out as overly impressive though. There are parts where the colouring is changed in order to change the atmosphere, which I thought was pretty effective. Sound- Pretty forgettable, theres a cool 80's synth tune that... Goku: Midnight Eye

Mar 17, 2012

Story- Okay the story is pretty much this, Goku the main char, is a detective and people that he knows are commiting scuicide. He thinks that they are actually murders. He has an eye that can analyze things and makes him immune to the powers of the one who is making people commit scuicide. Apparantly it can also control technology but I don't really see much of that in this OVA So his lover Yoko, is fatally injured (or atleast put in a coma) due to the organization that the person who is making people commit scuicide is from(the leader used some bees that are attracted to human breathe) ... California Crisis: Gun Salvo

Nov 29, 2012

Is it me or does this site just really hate older anime >_> Anyway this review is for a very underwatched 80's OVA known as California Crisis. As you would guess the OVA is set in California, America and contains quite a lot of pop cultural references from that time such as Rocky.  Story- So the story follows this guy and girl as they're trying to run away from some secret government agency that is looking for this ball that the girl happened to pick up.Thats about it without spoiling the end... whch honestly wasn't that good. Its kind of a prolonged chase scene, but a really fun one... See full review

A Letter to Momo

Nov 20, 2012

Let me start off by saying that I was quite disapointed with this anime movie by Production I.G. Maybe I was just expecting something differen't or actually original or unique, but instead I got "A letter to Momo". Now by no means is this a bad film it is just very unoriginal and also extremely slow-paced. Did I mention that this movie took 7 years to make?  Story- The story is very basic, it follows the protagonist Momo who has moved to an island with her mother from Tokyo. When she arrives on the island she encounters certain "supernatural presences" that I will not spoil... See full review

Some anime are just so manly that they no longer can be considered mere anime. They fall into the rare niche genre of MANIME!. Anime for men! Yes this anime is very manly! Its so manly infact I cried manly tears several times during my time watching this. If anything I'd say it was Silver Fang Gin, but instead of dogs... it actually had people and was much more realistic... but thats not saying much considering how realistic Silver Fang was >_> Story- The story... is very contrived, prepare to suspend you disbelief if you plan on watching this anime lol. Birdy the Mighty

May 10, 2012

So I watched the T.V series, before this and when I found out that Yoshiaki Kawajiri had created the original OVA, I knew I had to check it out. I was expecting a lot more blood, guts gore, nudity and his trademark char designs, but what I got was much of the same as the T.V series. Story- Aside from a few characters added in the T.V series, just about the exact same story. I don't really want to spoil, it though but if you've seen the T.V series you know the circumstances that Tsutomu and Birdy find themselves in. There is deffinetly lack of char development that the T.V series had and I believe this OVA... See full review

PSYCHO-PASS

Mar 27, 2013

Fair warning, like most reviews in existence my review is quite biased and I was influeced by the "hype" factor concerning this particular anime. Quite a few factors influenced my hype for this title including the production studio (Production I.G), the setting (futuristic cyberpunk) and the writer (Mr. Urobutcher himself). Pretty much what I was expecting was Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex season 3, with awesome plot twists. What I got... wasn't completely unexpected, but at the same time I couldn't help but feel disappointed with it.  Story- As I mentioned before the... See full review

Mar 10, 2013

I'll try to keep my review short, because this is only about a 40 min OVA, but basically its a good old 80's sci-fi OVA without all that much context behind it. Story and Characters- So the story focuses on this kid named Kouji who just happens to find  this military mecha suit prototype called Madox-01. He somehow finds himself piloting this thing, but at the same time needs to rendezvous with a girl he likes. So he races against the clock to meet up this girl while trying to avoid the military which is trying to reclaim the suit with their own suit (well I guess its more of an Exo-skeleton armor... So Burn Up! Is a one episode OVA that spawned two 12 episode T.V series and another 4 episode OVA. If I had to compare it to anything it would be Bubble Gum Crisis also by AIC, excpet not quite as good. It's pretty much your basic cops OVA, with a bit of violence and fanservice here and there.  Story- So the story is pretty much about these female cops in the future who have to defeat this evil organization and rescue their friend... yeah not the most origianl story there ever was. The story dragged a little in the middle, but the actiony parts were quite engaging.  Animation- Easily the... See full review

I honestly don't see why people hate this so much >_> I actually found it quite hilarious. Yeah theres not much char development or explanation, but its a 30 min OVA what do you expect? Just the very though that this exists during the 80's is hilarious in itself. It might have been something really terrible if it was done during our time, but I think the 80's atmosphere (animation and music) adds a nice touch to this kind of story. Plus I believe this is the first anime ever to feature tentacles but no sex lol. Also the female gang member(Maki) was probably the most useful character in the anime... See full review
