This is about the Anime-Planet Characters Database.
When we originally conceived of the Description guidelines, the idea was to trim down spoilers and plot. Wikipedia--where I used to go for character info--descriptions tend towards elaborate plot summaries so that the descriptions can be as comprehensive as possible.
But what happens when a character's entire existence and your understanding of him or her can be transformed by perfect knowledge of who the character is? You run into a lot of trouble.
For example, Miyu Greer of My-HiME is NOT who she appears to be, and her actual identity so shatters her initial conception that describing her in a non-spoiler manner flattens her into almost a non-entity. But adding insult to injury, it turns out that she's the exactly same character in Mai-Otome (a revelation that is less surprising, but casts aside some of the more basic notions about the world that Mai-Otome lays out).
Does this mean that we should introduce spoilers into the database? Probably not, but it's interesting that in holding to our ideal of non-spoilers that some characters get completely under-served.
