I'm gonna keep this short, since I'm writing it instead of doing other things that I should be (including stuff for the site. boo, me!).
I was thinking about Aoi Hana in light of my upcoming Kashimashi review (which currently is BOOOO-RING) and realized that what I want out of romance is payoff. Love is a large emotion that writes itself big on your heart, as a result, I find that stories that don't treat it as momentous are considerably lacking. Have you ever been in love? Did those so-called "small moments" seem small to you? I don't think so. Even being in the same space as your loved one caused your heart to overflow with feelings that defy words (unless, of course, you are a poet).
So, when a show comes along like Aoi Hana that tries to really dial back the emotion in order to seem more mature, it feels hollow to me. Usually, I come to shoujo-ai because those feelngs are written larger and with more complexity, but the same general feeling comes from Toradora!. In short, I want my romance shows bursting with feeling, because that is precisely what romance is.
