Hello, my name is Nelson Rolon (Elijah Lee), a recent college grad. I currently run an anime review blog, The Anime Guardians, at http://www.anime-guardians.com/. I'm also starting a website with a few friends, http://www.projectotaku.com/. Among my favorite shows and films are the Ghost in the Shell franchise and FLCL. If anyone has recommendations for the blog, please feel free to contact me, either through Anime-planet or my email, [email protected]. I hope to be an active member of the Anime-planet community.
Anime and Me
I grew up during the 1990's Japanese frenzy in America, so Power Rangers and DBZ and Gundams and Sailor Moon were part of my childhood. In my teenage years I was more interested in American animation and comics, but since entering college my tastes have definitely leaned towards anime and manga, to the point where now I don't bother reading anything from Marvel or DC. It's not that I think American comics and cartoons suck. But I do feel that they are too safely entrenched in their successful marketing strategies to try adding variety to their franchises (for example, why hasn't anyone killed Spiderman's Aunt May yet, and what kind of moron thought that Superman's glasses would be a good civilian disguise?). Anime and manga, on the other hand, are so varied that there's something out there for anyone willing to pick up a manga or watch an anime. Japanese works are ambitious and many manga-ka and anime studios take their work seriously.
I don't read manga unless it's a short series. Anime, on the other hand, is something I love dearly. My college roommate watches anime all the time, which is largely why I've recently embraced the idea as well. But he'll watch anything. I, on the other hand, use great discretion in what I watch. I've spent two of my college years studying film, and now I'm studying Art History, so deeply analyzing work is very much built into my life. I generally avoid ecchi and shows devoted to fanservice. I prefer a compelling story with a coherent plot. And I'm partial to detective tales and mysteries, science-fiction and mecha, and characters with emotional turmoil. Beautiful artwork is also a nice bonus.
Well, I guess that's enough about me. Feel free to leave a comment if you care to chat.
