5 Centimeters per Second

on

So this is a pretty hyped film, and in some respects I can see why, it looks amazing, there's really no denying that with its sweeping landscapes, perfect use of tilt shift and smooth as silk animation, and on top of that it has a reputation for being pretty emotionally charged and quite melancholy. I have another term for it. Mean spirited. Never have I seen such a show tht just really wanted to grind me down so much and try and make me feel bad. The MC starts off as an innocent child who just wants to see the girl he's crushing on before she moves beyond his reach, but we progress from that onto his... See full review

Kuragehime

on

Noitamina shows have recently been taking a bit of a dive, so it was good to go back and remind myself of why the time slot has such a good reputation, Kuragehime was a great way of achieving this. Story Tsukimi has recently moved into a boarding house in Tokyo filled with batchelorettes, and joined the Sisterhood. A group of Otaku NEET women who live only to persue their individula hobbies. In the case of Tsukimi, this is jellyfish. One day when walking back from a convenience store, she sees that a spotted jellyfish is sharing a tank with an aurelia, a type of jeelyfish that secretes a toxin that will... See full review

Chirin no Suzu

on

I was given this as one of my Secret Santa recommendations, and it turned out to be a little gem! Story We start off with a young Chirin, frolicing through the fields and generally enjoying his happy little existence with all his other critter friends, at night he returns back to his mother where they sleep together and the next day he starts his little adventures again, warned never to go past the perimeter fence for fear of the Wolf. Unfortunately, the Wolf doesn't care about fences and one night, kills Chirin's mother as she tries to protect him. There's reminescences of Bambi from the beginning to... See full review

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

on

Vulgar, repellent, disgusting. All words I have seen associated with this show. To those people I say, grow a sense of humour. This show is vulgar and disgusting, but in the most glorious way, any show that has an episode dedicated to sperm trying to fertilise an egg portrayed in a similaqr style to Saving Private Ryan knows their comedy, and knows it well. Yes this show is full of sex jokes, fart jokes, poop jokes and anything else in between, but it does it so well in such an exaggerated style that it turns the ridiculousness of the whole thing in to pure comedy gold. Story: It's pretty episodic... See full review

Ghost Hunt

on

As part of the Anime Planet Secret Santa marathon (the thread of which can be found here http://www.anime-planet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=200722) I was given Ghost Hunt to watch, as well as a couple of others. Over all I enjoyed the show quite a bit, it started off quite slow, then it picked up pace with it's second arc before tailing off a little in the middle, before rampaging through the final 3 arcs at what felt like a breakneck speed. So what's it about? Mai Taniyama is a high school girl who likes telling ghost stories... See full review

Penguindrum

Mawaru Penguin Drum Where to start… Every once in a while, some kind of media will come along and change something in you. Whether it’s just a view on something small or large, or something that makes you completely rethink your life, It’s bound to happen at least once, if not multiple times. The first time this happened to me was when I first played Final Fantasy VII at the age of 12, it completely challenged my childish view of story telling, and I arguably never fully understood it until I replayed it in my later years. The second time this happened was reading His Dark... See full review

Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi

on

Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi Why god why? Animation: Like most J C Staff stuff it’s pretty good and consistent in it’s own simplistic way. The character designs are well thought out, if a little over designed, but it’s slick enough and never hurts the eyes. The backdrops are pretty good, though sometimes a little bland. Nothing here is exactly breath taking, it just does the job it was set out to do in the most efficient way possible, which is no bad thing at all. There are some nice design touches, like Ryouko’s Nekogauntlets, Ryoushi’s slingshot etc. ... See full review

Nisemonogatari

Nisemonogatari  Before reading this, I'd reccomend that you firstly watch Bakemonogatari, and read this review http://www.anime-planet.com/users/Taekwondoin/reviews/9709 Nisemono - Fake, Imitation, Bogus, Counterfeit, Forgery, Phony, Copy etc. Monogatari - Legend, Story, Tale. Another very good play on words here. Animation: Pretty much the same as Bakemonogatari here, though it may be slightly slicker, with more emphasis put on shading and lighting especially on the... Bakemonogatari

on

Bakemonogatari So here we go, my first review of an anime made by what is slowly becoming my favourite studio. Bakemono - Ghost/monster, Monogatari - Story, a very good play on words in my opinion. Animation: Much like a lot of Shaft's stuff, this is sure to divide opinion. I loved it and though it was some of the best i've come across in a long time. The character animation is completely consistent, right down to the expressions on each of their faces. And for once the male characters gets just as much attention to detail as the female characters. But the characters aren't really the centre stage here... See full review

Elfen Lied

on

So, this is my first review, so please leave comments on how you thought i did, and if you have any recomendations on things i should watch/read or even review, then that would be pretty great. Oh, and i want to leave my plot review til last as it will probably be the longest ;) Elfen Lied then, so where do i start, a girl breaks out of a scientific research facility, lots of nakedness and gore ensues. Boy finds said girl on beach, lots of 'Hilarious' situations unfold, strange love triangles blossom. Also child molestation.   Animation: Growing up on a diet of dragonball Z and neon genesis...
