Valvrave the Liberator

May 3, 2013

Once upon a time, Sunrise executives got into a drinking contest, or a party at the strip club, or whatever it is they do when they run low on cash and have to think of a new title. They needed something good, something genre-breaking. The artist already gave them a beautiful design, so now they only had to think of a story – piece of cake, right? Well, not really. They could only come up with a list of all the overused crappy cliches: - a teenage protagonist that's a coward and want to make peace not war - a female tsundere childhood friend that is his ever-unfullfilled love interest - a bunch of... The Familiar of Zero: "Rondo" of Princesses

Nov 24, 2009

Before I start I must warn you, that this review is written, with an assumption that reader watched previous 2 seaons. I won't hesitate with major spoilers of the preceeding shows, so if you haven't seen them then you might reconsider further reading.Even the greatest can make a blunder, and past glory won't save them from it. A succesful brand with large fanbase. A 2 seasons, that receive positive feedback. J.C.Staff - company, that could be nicknamed "god of awesome cliche stories", for it's skills in making the unoriginal content shine. Sounds like ingredients for something epic? Unfortunately... Linebarrels of Iron

Oct 29, 2009

Many people have strong prejudice against mecha genre. It is supposedly shallow, cliche, boring and pointless. And despite how much it pains to me say it (since I actually like mecha genre)  - Kurogane no Linebarrel is the prime example of how pathetic mecha anime can get. Story - 4/10 Have you ever wondered how it would feel to get hit in the face with random, falling, giant robot? Well the main character can experience it first hand, since this is how the whole mess starts. A random, weak  guy suddenly gets killed by falling mecha, and since the hot chick piloting it feels guilty, she... See full review

Hatsukoi Limited

Oct 27, 2009

In 9 of 10 cases if you bring a good romance material to J.C.Staff they will create a very enjoyable show (though somehow cliche). They just have to skill to make unoriginal stuff shine (I consider ZnT 3rd some sort of mistake, maybe they were drunk all the time while making it, or somehow watched too much Eiken and it influenced him in a bad way...). That's why I went to watch this with high expectations, and Hatsukoi Limited didn't disapoint me. Story - 7.5/10 It's hard to really call it a single story, since it's actually  a collection of short love stories. Sure, there is some sort of... See full review

Tears to Tiara

Oct 24, 2009

"Anime, based on an ero-game, featuring  a man of a mysterious origin, leading a small tribe of oppressed people to fight the empire... Where did I heard of a such a setttin... Ah but of course - Utawarerumono!" - that could sum up my first thoughts of this show. Up to ep 7 (or somewhere around that) I believed this show would just be a cheap Utawarerumono rip-off . Fortunately I was proven wrong. It's true, that both animes share number of similarities, but in the end Tears to Tiara somehow manages to create it's unique story - a weird mix of Arthurian legends, ancient Rome setting and some... Sengoku Basara: Samurai Kings

Nov 15, 2009

Game based animes often turns out to be a giant waste of time. Shows originating from cRPGs usually have messed up pace. Ero-game based romances often have shallow characters, and unrealistic developments. Finally -  series made after action games tend to have no plot whatsoever. I'm getting sad, just by remembering the horrors of productions like Tekken the movie or Devil may cry. I get the killing urge when I recall the goddamnawful 2 eps of Final Fantasy unlimited, my friend made me sit through. So why is Sengoku Basara enjoyable show? The answer to that is easy. Instead of trying too hard... See full review

Black Butler

Apr 28, 2010

Once upon a time in a far away land of Japan a group of bishounen obsessed fan-girls sit, and watched Jigoku Shoujo.  As they went  through 78 episodes of all 3 seasons an idea was born - they could do the same thing, just better. So they started planning their masterpiece. First they changed the entire cast into a swarm of bishies. Now since they had only pretty boys left they decided to give contract with the devil to only one person , so they can build some shounen-aiish master-servant relationship. Once that was added all the semi-realistic problems of Jigoku Shoujo were a bit bothersome, so... See full review

Binbou Shimai Monogatari

Nov 20, 2009

There are few things that can really make me irritated in an anime. One of them is when seiyus lack emotion - like in Whistle. Than there is ugly CG (like in Bantorra ), lack of common sense (like in Sacred Blacksmith ) lack of ending (like in Berserk ) ... the list is long. And finally there is an issue, when anime instead of improving the quality of the manga diminishes it. And that's the case with Binbou Shimai Monogatari.Story - 5.7/10When I've read the show's description it sounded like a tasty meal for a Slice of Life fan. 2 poor sisters, living together and fighting against a... Toradora!

Oct 13, 2009

Copy-pasting my review from forum :P Story 7/10 This anime shows, that if you take many unoriginal concepts and mix them together you can get something, that feels new (even though it’s essentially reheated food). Girl helping a guy get close to the one he secretly loves? High school student that looks like delinquent but is actually pretty normal? Over-energetic, completely dense girl, who doesn’t notice boys feelings? Arrogant girl falling in love and suddenly switching from ultra aggressive to ultra shy? All of this concepts are really common, and Toradora just merges them into one, ... See full review

A Certain Magical Index

Oct 13, 2009

Can a show with pretty solid world setting, likeable characters, good action pace and good animation turn out to be mediocre? Index proves that indeed, it can.  And this fact really makes me a sad panda. Why? Well Index got 2 really amazing ideas for character powers - ability of an alchemist and ability of certain esper called Accelarator. I won't spoil you the content, but if you watch this show you will understand the unbelievable potential of those 2 powers. And even with that the show fails to deliver. Let's check why...1. Index - supposedly main heroine of the story is actually playing a major... See full review

Kamichu!

Dec 3, 2009

Shows marked as slice of life usually tend to build up their charm slowly. A combinaton of good music, nice mood and beatiful animation gradually captivate the viewer and make him attached to the series.  But there are also titles like Kamichu. They hit you with brilliant  scene at the very beginning, and at that moment you realize - this  anime is gonna be great. After seeing shy, middle-school girl, casually confessing she became a god  I couldn't help but smile.  And from that point on, the show only got better. Story 8.6/10Yurie Hitotsubashi suddenly became a goddess. You know ... See full review

Princess Princess

Nov 24, 2009

If animes could be compared to different kind of meals, then Princess Princess would be described as dish without any flavour. You know the kind of food, that would get very tasty if the chef decided to make it spicy or sour, but he didn't. You eat it and have completely no emotions towards it. It's neither bad nor good and after you finish the meal, you will forget about the taste very soon. Story - 4/10 Once again anime ventures into mysterious world of all-boys high school, or at least the womans dellusion of what this place should look like. In order to calm the raging desires of young boys... See full review

Detroit Metal City

Nov 18, 2009

The review to give this show it's justice is really tough to make. It would need to be created from combination of words: rape and kill, their synonyms, their versions in japaneese and synonyms of those japaneese words. Final flavour would be every vulgar world describing humans genitalias, that you can find in a dictionary. That wouldn't be the end of it's problems. The main issue is, that this kind of text could be understood properly only by the emperor Krauser himself, so it would loose  it's educational value. Therefore in order to promote this show a bit, following compromise was... See full review

Honey and Clover

Nov 4, 2009

I think there are 2 ways for a show to achieve greatness. One of them is to shock a viewer - quick action, unexpected story twists and lots of suspense are perfect tools for it. Whether the plan is to leave the viewer pumped up with adrenaline ( approach that most of sports animes take) or leave him empty and depressed ( End of Evangelion is the best example here) the main part of it is impact. As long as you are hit strong enough, you will naturally use "amazing" and "extraordinary" when talking about that anime. The second way is equally tricky to pull, even though it sounds simple ... Ga-Rei-Zero

Oct 20, 2009

I was peacefully reading Ga-Rei manga and just finished Yomi Arc. But the story of Kagura-Yomi past was barely explained in very weak, not engaging way. So since I remembered hearing something about prequel to manga I thought - "Ah what the hell... let's stall manga for a while, and watch the prequel, I mean come one it can't get worse than this average manga right"? With that attitude I  played first episode, and was dissapointed immediately. The air of being a prequel smelled from every scene,  and instead of manga characters there were some worthless random people. But I... See full review

Sora no Manimani

Oct 13, 2009

When you take a very cliched genred and try to make something original out of it there are 3 possible outcomes. It can turn into a memorable masterpiece. It can turn into something so weird only the angsty kids would watch it while prouldy saying it's "alternative". Or, and this is the outcome in this show case, it can look like cliche anime that is trying a bit too hard. This show is a typical light lovecom to the core. We have childhood friends, love rivarly, oblivious-energetic chara, intelligent tsundere chara - basically completely typical. So how can a show gain the edge to shine a bit... See full review

Spice and Wolf II

Oct 13, 2009

I was somehow annoyed, that I've  put a lot of work on reviews of shows that I found boring, but only written a very short note about my favorite show. Hence I rewritten this review.  Sequels can easier find a fanbase (since if the first show is good, the base is already created) but there is a price for that - higher expectations. If a show was good, than the second season have to be as good as the predecessor, or else it will be deemed a failure. Of course it can't copy what happened in first season either - fans are always demanding something new. So taking the harsh conditions under... See full review
