Haikyuu!!

on Jan 28, 2015

Story: [7/10] Yet another sports shounen, each season we get a new sport shounen that tackles a new sport and each year becomes less mainstream than the last. Volleyball is the name of the game in Haikyuu!! and its a blast to experience a sport that ur unfamiliar with in such a fantastic and inspiring setting that anime can and Haikyuu has provided. The storyline is exactly the same as Yowamushi Pedal and Kuroko's Basketball, an underdog school is aiming to challenge the best in the inter-high (high school championships). The same shounen hype, the same cliche characters and its very easy to compare most... See full review

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works TV

on Jan 9, 2015

Story:[3/10] Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (UBW) has some references to previous fate zero but for the most part, you do not need to watch them to understand this anime. For those of you who are familiar with the previous series then UBW is esentially the next holy grail war with the masters being desendants, more or less of the main characters of fate zero. For those unfamiliar the general idea is that there are 7 contestants for a powerful artifact "the holy grail" which is ... See full review

Akame ga Kill!

on Dec 15, 2014

Story [2/10] The premise of assassins and evil kingdoms sounds interesting and full of that coveted depravity which could almost be called a genre in its own right, at least when it comes to anime. However depravity and violence in anime, in my view, is always best served along side of something which redeems its existence or adds to already existing concepts that should shock or awe the viewer by themselves and then add on the shocking imagery for a complete effect. Shocking imagery without weighted concepts or some sort of purpose, like making us fear or awe a character or become horrified at the death... See full review

Noragami

on Apr 18, 2014

Story: [2/10]  Anime planet's synopsis: "Yato may just be a minor god now, but he’s determined to make it big and he’s got a plan. Unfortunately, things just don’t seem to be going his way. He doesn’t have a single shrine dedicated to him, his partner has just quit, and now he’s got to find a new divine weapon." The synopsis sounds kind of exciting right? A god trying to increase his influence over Japan, have the people errect shrines in his honour and pray to him. A plot that involved world conquest, betrayal, strategy and alliances... who knows what they... See full review

Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!

on Apr 8, 2014

Story; [8/10] I feel as though there are two perspectives to the same story that can be taken here, (Kuroki Tomoko doesn't stand out and her social skils are atrocious, as a result she can't make friends at school or have the romantic high school experience she wanted). One side of the story is the ridiculous schemes she comes up with to make friends or to to make her school life more fufilling and worthwhile. This is the comedy of the series and some of it can be fairly unrealistic while others might not be, depending on your experiences at high school. The other side is the real part of Tomoko's... Samurai Champloo

on Jan 16, 2014

Story: [8/10] Samurai Champloo is a story about three travelers who for the purpose of finding the mysterious samurai who smells like sunflowers  group up together and travel across 19th century Japan. Our characters face danger and starvation every day, in this somewhat episodic action-adventure. Usually I dislike episodic series because they lack a structure which can give closure to a story and I feel as though each episode may as well be it's last but Samurai Champloo's main story is knitted into each episode and despite how many characters and spin-off story lines are introduced, it never lost... Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai!

on Jan 12, 2014

Story: [6/10] The synopsis is a good one except that it doesn't indicate the high level of drama that is involved in the anime. While the premise can be quite funny for the first few episodes, the drama that develops between the two leads is very gooey and whether it should be considered seriously or not is open to intepretation. While I would understand what someone might mean when they say the anime provoked a strong emotional reacton and they were rather touched by it, I think the anime came close to being relatable, it came close to being a good drama but it fell short and just annoyed me. The reason... See full review

Kuroko's Basketball

on Sep 3, 2013

Story: [6.5/10] Reviewing Kuroko's Basketball is difficult because I want to give a helpful opinion but also give my opinion, the truth is that there are a lot of aspects about this anime that will annoy people. It's a shounen and if you dislike shounens then this one will not be an exception, just like all the baseball shounens such as Major and One outs and all of them. Players are hyped to an extreme, everytime someone does something you'll get two-three people telling you how amazing it is and all the typical cliches you can expect are there. Personally I usually get pretty drawn into these type of... See full review

Hana-Saku Iroha

on Jul 9, 2013

Story: [5/10] The storyline? I was more interested in the filler episodes... Character development only happens after the credits, Predicting the plot isn't even fun because it's too easy. I am being genuinely serious when I say that I was more interested in the filler episodes, it's extremely hard to take a romance seriously when the only thing you know about a guy is that he confessed to the lead. It's extremely hard to care about Ohana's relationship with her mother when all you know about her is that she's selfish. This trend is similar with a lot of characters, there have been reviews where I have... See full review

Cross Game

on Jul 5, 2013

Story [5/10] Cross Game is a fairly slow paced, light-hearted sports anime that focuses a lot more on the characters and their relationships rather than the actual base ball itself. A lot of the episodes are pretty much fillers and not many real challenges arise for the protagonist Ko. Unlike a lot of character-obsessed animes we don't get many story arcs at all (arguably none) and few relationships recieve any development despite the anime being fairly lengthy. It's hard to explain how effectively every episode wastes its time but the best way to explain apart from how much attention minor characters... See full review

From the New World

on May 4, 2013

Story: [6.5/10] Shinsekai Yori has an amazing start, the first 7 episodes are magical and intense, beautiful and stunning. While it's drop off point is earlier than others, it too suffers from a problem in anime where the story goes off quite quickly. The story takes several turns and so it's hard to give an overall synposis but since there isn't one provided by AP... Shinsekai Yori is set in a small village that practices psychic abillities called Cantus, which are taught and studied by everyone who lives there. Story: [9/10] Tired of animes starting off well and then going to shit? Tired of fan service and horrible endings? Psycho-Pass is one of those few animes that delivers from start to finish, I feel overral it was very satisfying for me after having so many disapointments lately when it comes to expecting something really good and then having it go bad. The story takes place in a futuristic world where law enforcement has mainly been replaced by drones and a super computer named "sibyl" which governs society. Welcome to the NHK!

on Dec 31, 2012

Story [6/10] Welcome the NHK is a slice of life based on antihero protagonist Tatsuhiro Sato, as a genre it is practically identical to many other Japanese slice of life type animes, with the otaku culture, the constant perversion of males and so on. While fundamentally NHK isn't much different from those, it deals with a lot of contemporary concepts like the otaku culture, unemployment, lonliness and Japan's infamous suicide groups. I can't say this aspect is unique either and how it views these problems aren't particuarly special. If you kind of know what I'm talking about, which most avid anime... See full review

Story: 7.5/10 There are a lot of people who think Berserk is a great anime, but the more I read about others' opinions I come to understand that the reasons it is loved vary so much, some are saying it's great b/c of y if only x wasn't there and others saying x was amazing but y was a bit overdone and so on. I do think Berserk was a great anime, but again I feel that the reasons I think t's good and what I thought was bad about it will vary greatly from others. I wouldn't write a review about an anime I thought was good and was reviewed as amazing but I need some closure with this anime, my frustrations... See full review

Gungrave

on Jul 21, 2012

Story: 2/10 In a world where no matter how many times you're shot, you always have time for a speech, Gungrave is a story that's been told a million times and this time was no better than the last. Gungrave is an anime about the mafia, it's an anime about the dangers of ambition and it's a pretentious moral story that I've grown so tired of. How many gangster movies with this exact plot line have been made? Sure this time we added a bit of sci-fi to mix it up but the base is the same. However Gungrave had aspects that were one thousand times more disgusting than any other gangster movie I have ever seen... See full review

Steins;Gate

on Jul 10, 2012

Story: 6/10 Steins;Gate, for me at least, was not really a psychological thriller, it is has strong similarities with Clannad and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, at best it could be compared to Higurashi no Haku Koro ni Kai. Yes, it's another "group of friend" animes, with extremely strong similarities to the first two I compared it to. While I felt Steins;Gate was probably more funny and the characters were more likeable, the story line was far less complex or intelligent and it's drama was pretty cheap. Seeing as there's no synposis, here is the general story. Okabe Rintaro rents out a small... See full review

Katanagatari

on Jul 8, 2012

Katanagatari Story: 7.5/10 First I'll say, I adored this anime, while I am not completely sure how good it was compared to other animes I've watched,  I know I enjoyed it. Katanagatari is like a mix of Spice and Wolf With Ruroni Kenshin, while it's synposis makes it kind of sound like a strategist movie like Death Note, it isn't at all. It's enjoys playing with the relationship between Togame and Yasuri like it did Holo and Lawrence, it can devote entire episodes to playful banter and the usual romantic comedy stuff, while its approach to that is different to Spice and Wolf, I still enjoyed it in the... Denpa Teki na Kanojo

on Jul 6, 2012

Story: 7.5/10 It's hard to talk about the story without spoiling, so instead I'll just comment on it, the animeplanet synposis is pretty fine. Denpa Teki na Kanojo has two sides, the male fantasy of a compitent, interesting and pretty female servant with a side of younger sister and a dark horror story. However as in animes like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, it managed to appeal to the two greatest and most cliche obsessions of men, in short, women and violence. This anime could also be described as a harem of sorts, the overall message here is that Denpa Teki na Kanojo was designed for adolecent males such... See full review

Ghost Hound

on Jul 5, 2012

Story 4/10 Ghost Hound is a strange anime, however to what section of this review I can attribute this to I'm unsure. The storyline is quite vague, it's almost episodic because it's so vague, but it's very blatant at times yes but it's so simplistic that I don't know where to put everything. Miyako is a girl with shamanistic powers, she acts as a vessel for gods and spirits to communicate to the real world, a dying religion/cult who's leader just perished suffers from having no new leader as Makoto hates his grandmother. They try to steal Miyako so that she can revive their dying religion. However three... See full review

*NOTICE* Being emapthetic to readers after writing this I don't think I would have liked to read a review like this before I watched the anime. Utawarerumono

on May 27, 2012

Utawarerumono is not generally the kind of anime that I watch and yet I conceived the plot before it's happening. The characters are clichés, the story is a cliché and there was no aspect of this anime that i've not yet seen before. I knew a few episodes in that nothing in this anime would do would amaze me. However each and every episode was worth watching, it was completely average but apparently that was enough for me. However I cannot give the story more than 5.5, it was like a hidden mirror into a child's imagination, it possessed nothing worth mentioning and the more it progressed the... See full review

Another

on May 26, 2012

Story: 3/10 Another follows the path of violence, a cursed class suffering the 26 year long phonenmon of death. I would compare it to the "Final Destination", basically students are surrounded by senseless death, its explanations - unsatisfactory, it's plot - uninteresting. This anime follows an increasingly popular trend of attracting its viewers through violence. Violence interests me, but not in this sense. There is much more to be said about the plot but it is not worth saying, it is basically a combination of Lord of the Flies and Final Destination. It could have been redeemed through... Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora

Story: 7/10 Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora is not a long anime and it knows it well, youth and love explode in this short but sweet anime. Each character has a purpose and they serve it well, everyone is likeable in their own way but not so likeable that you hate them! The story is a cliche, there is always something to be said about love and no shortage of people to say it but if you're like me and you feel like you have heard everything there is to hear then this anime probably isn't going to surprize you in anyway but that's not what these kind of animes are about! Shiki

on May 6, 2012

Story : 5/10 There are many meanings one could assert from this anime, some characters had one or two interesting ideas, perhaps there are some lessons we could learn from the foolishness of certain characters and maybe one or two provocative ideas. This is all that seperates Shiki from a mindless, violent vampire flick and let me tell you now it's not that much. Shiki starts off nicely, taking its time with setting out characters and the plot and it at takes a while before things heat up. However its quite arguable that despite the apparant depth of some characters, they don't really do anything with it... See full review

Deadman Wonderland Story: 3/10 Ganta, a 14 year old kid is the sole survivor of a massacre that killed all of his classmates, these murders are pinned on him and he is forced to go to a privately owned prison that sports violent game shows with its residents. Deadman Wonderland is another social experiment/violent flick that plagues the more darker side of American movies. The prison facilitates the inherent evil nature of human beings, the shows sole purpose to display depraved, sadistic and selfish acts under the should-be-interesting-but-isn't genre of psychological thriller. Story [7/10] I had no idea what Go was before watching Hikaru no Go, but it is basically placing stones on points where the vertical and horizontal lines meet on the board. Using them you can trap stones/sets of stones by capturing them with your rocks on all adjecent sides to form a closed shape (can use ends of the board) or alternatively you win by gaining control over the board in order to win the final calculation that happens at the end of the game. Considering how many confused people there are, maybe it didn't repeat itself enough but still I was determined with Lain I wouldn't fall behind here either.
