Hello! SpineShank here! Better known as Daft Behemoth (as if I'm known at all...). I'm your typical anime/ computer nerd. My unhealthy addiction to all things anime is what has kept me here for over five years now and in that time I've amassed quite a library, so feel free to ask me for recommendations if you'd like. Other than that, I spend my time playing games, building computers, and working as a desktop/ server support guy for the University of Montana.

I keep a spec list here for some reason or another... and hey, feel free to ask me if you're curious about building a computer. I have to put my encyclopedic knowledge of computer parts to use somehow. :P

I completely understand - you didn't offend me at all.  I just wanted to explain my reasoning for not watching it as well.  People like different things for different reasons, and not everything I consider bad is automatically bad.  I know a lot of people liked Fate/Stay Night, for instance, while I found it to be about 90% full of shit. XD

And you're right with its touchy themes not being new, but I don't touch anything of those genres either.  Elfen Lied was one of the few that really picked up as mainstream which is why I pointed it out - it gained its fame for being morbid.  It's the same reason I don't watch movies like Saw and Hostel and such - I had a coworker who loved them for some reason I could never understand, but for me they're sick and disgustingly perverted.  While I don't think Elfen Lied compares to those films in terms of raw gore, there's just too many things about the series which turn me off to it; nothing more, nothing less.  Not trying to convince you to change your opinion of it or anything, but I just like extrapolate on my views when asked - I'm fairly open minded about watching things, but there are a few genres/series that I just refuse to watch. =P

Yahtzee is a god among men.

Violence and nudity can add substance to a work (ala Higurashi) but I think there's a fine line between necessity and overkill - Higurashi didn't need to have heads and limbs flying to achieve its intended effects.  While I've read a number of reviews claiming it to be great, fantastic, etc, I've heard equally as many (if not more) riveting its many faults.

Even then, the ones I do read that provide support for it tend to say something along the lines of "Well, aside from the violence and nudity, it's good!"  I simply don't buy that argument as valid enough to merit a watch.  Just because it breaks a lot of norms - child molestation and such too I believe - doesn't necessarily make it spectacular in my opinion.  I constantly hear "the more diverse, the more obscure the better!" for arguments supporting anything from anime plots to racial balancing in schools, but for me personally it's not an end-all sort of rationale.  Sure Elfen Lied may break a lot of taboos, but they are taboos I'd prefer to have kept rather than dabbled with; there are plenty of routes a series can take to be original without delving into the grotesque and macabre; being unique in presentation can be as much of a negative as it can be a positive.

That's my take, anyway. =P

I'm not much a senseless gore/violence kinda guy.  I don't mind pure action flicks, but they never get beyond mediocre for me.  Hellsing Ultimate had the same story/character flaws (though Seras was somewhat better in the OVA) and thus the same general score.  The action was just better, which isn't enough for me to really find anything substantial to improve my score with other than graphics.

That's the major reason I refuse to watch Elfen Lied myself.  All my impressions have been hinted at it being total, random dismemberment (I don't more gore, but I tend to draw the line with that), shallow characters, and a superficially interesting but unexplored plot.  Just not in my tastes. =P

If it wants to have violence/gore, I'd prefer it in the mold of Higurashi (first season) - fairly strong characters with an intriguing story.  No violence just because.
