Having finished the whole series, I can say I will definitely be adding this one to my collection. The first few episodes were tedious, but I pushed on since I already knew it didn't get into the real story until a little ways in.
Even once I got past the initial stuff, some of it wasn't anything spectacular. But the further in I got, the better it was. Since it was based off an old movie, which I believe was based off an even older manga, it has a very retro story feel to it. The animation is clean and modern, but it definitely has the old feel to it, which I found appealing. I was always a fan of those old space movies like this.
The one thing it leaves me wondering is, how on earth was the original crammed into a single movie? They must have added quite a bit beyond what was in the movie. I may check out the movie at some point, but I'm a bit loathe to see how much less there is in the original, or how rushed it will seem in comparison.
