So I was busy wondering why I hadn't heard from you in a while and then I remembered. I was typing a response about a month ago to your last post and I hit the back button and erased all of it. I was really annoyed so I just shut the computer down and was going to write it the next day. But I forgot. So I guess you didn't disappear, but I did. My ultimate goal of this post is to complete it and actually post it.
Right now I'm reading Olympos by Dan Simmons and listening to (I'm a big fan of audiobooks) Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Olympos is the sequel to Illium. It's sci-fi/fantasy with an emphasis on classic literature (Shakespeare, Proust, and some others) and most of the books take place in either the future earth or on Mars where the Illiad (Trojan War) is taking place. Atlas Shrugged is pretty much an exploration of human depravity and a moral justification for capitalism (if you choose to read it as such). It's about an industrial economy in conflict with socialist ideals and the main characters are all in conflict with everything and everyone around them. It's pretty good.
I'll read just about another except for trashy pulp romance novels. (Nicholas Sparks, Norah Roberts, and Lora Leigh are all out). That isn't to say that if there is a romance novel that has merit and I can't just file it away under 'bodice ripper' I won't read it. Besides, I love a good love story. I just don't want to read a book just to hear about the dirty bits.
Some of my favorites: Margaret Atwood, Dark Tower Series by Stephen King, Lolita by Vladimir Nabakov, the Wheel of Time series, The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, Virgin Suicides by Jeffery Eugenides, The Quiet American by Graham Greene, Jane Austen, Harry Potter, and I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith. But those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I know that there are plenty others that I absolutely loved. Any recommendations would be very much appreciated. One of my best friends (and housemate) and I are starting a book club this term and we're trying to pick out some books ahead of time. It looks like Beautiful and Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a 'for sure'.
As far as games go, I have a PC, a DS, and a PS2. PC: Sims. I am a Sims addict. It's disgusting. But I love my dolls. I mean sims. Dragon Age. Civilization. Overlord. My boyfriend and I share a steam account (or rather he uses mine) so I also watch a lot of games, which sounds lame, but I enjoy it. A lot of the games have good stories and are fun to watch as long as they don't make me motion sick (Assassin's Creed, the new Batman one, Bioshock, EVE, etc.). DS: I can't beat the Cloud of Darkness in the last fight in Final Fantasy III and I don't want to talk about it. Professor Layton!!! Dragon Quest V (I can't start playing it until I beat FFIII. So never. Ugh.) Animal Crossing. PS2: Final Fantasy. DDR. I don't play a lot of PS2 games, really. Nintendo: I love LOVE Smash Bros. And I will smash you. Or zap you since I normally play as pikachu. With a red party/baseball hat.
Hmm... well beyond reading, playing video games, and watching anime, I find that school mostly takes over my life. I was, until recently, attempting a double major, which means I didn't do anything. So for right now, knitting is it. I've always liked crafts - scrapbooking, needlework, paper-making, basically if it comes in a kit, I'll probably like it. Right now, I'm working on some fingerless gloves (technically their gauntlets because they go a ways up your arm and don't have individual finger holes... pattern: http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring07/PATTdashing.html ). I've finished the left one and have finished about an inch on the right one. Very exciting news, I know. :-) As far as knit-gift go, I'll add you to the list, but sadly it's long. I'm a relatively new knitter which means everything goes slowly. And my housemate has requested a super complex hat (she saw the picture in a knitting magazine I had and *has* to have it) for her birthday... in a month and a half... So you might get a scarf in the mail around August... 2011... :-P
What is caving? Is that climbing and hiking around in caves? I went camping for the first time in October (very exciting, but very cold. It snowed) and did some hiking then, but no caves. Have you seen a movie called The Descent? That's what I think of when you say that you like to cave. (movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435625/ )
Also, why don't you like fish? Is it a texture issue?
Why wouldn't Jesus surf? Isn't that what Heaven is about? Being rewarded for your purity and devotion and just kicking back? I say Jesus can do whatever he wants. He earned it.
My flight worked out more or less. We were super delayed because of fog and the flight was bumpy. But I got to Seattle in one piece with all of my stuff so I can count that as a success. I'm pretty happy to be done with all of my work. I finished that last big project yesterday morning and then madly started throwing things into suitcases. I tried to get it all into one, but it was too hard to figure out in the limited amount of time I had before my flight what I actually wanted to wear/have at my parents' house. So I have snow pants (in Seattle...), a spaghetti strap dress, seven million sweaters, and only three pairs of socks. Excellent.
Anyway, I just bought new yarn today (I knit) and am going to watch episode two of Bakemontagari and wind it up. :-) Super exciting, huh?
What do you do other than watch anime and write? Other than instigate fights about Jesus, of course.
You don't need to know much about art to talk about it realistically. It's just looking at pictures. I'm more interested in the social context behind the art and the impact that art had (or didn't have, as the case may be). I'm planning on writing a thesis (hahaha) on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (think super romantic, return to nature + King Arthur) and their response to the Industrial Revolution.
I am so close to being done. I had two finals today (one at 9am and one at 2pm... super lame. The only two tests I have are both on the last day) and this project that had an incredibly vague deadline ("just get it to me whenever as long as it's before you leave campus") so obviously I still have that left. Speaking of lack of polish, that project is going to be so rough you could make sand paper out of it.
I hope sister-rescue went well and that you didn't get bogged down in rain or fog. It's super foggy here... I'm actually a little worried my flight will be canceled. But! If it's canceled, that means I won't have left campus yet, so I'll have more time to finish my project. ^_^
I'm in school right now at Whitman College and majoring in art history. I work three different on-campus jobs (I'm at one of them right now...) but don't get paid until the 20th... which is super lame since I need to buy presents!
