Claymore

Feb 26, 2012

Despite my gut-instinct to walk away from an action heavy title that I thought was made specifically for friendless young adults who spent more time with a computer/tv than a girl (IE. shows like Naruto, Bleach, etc), I turned out to actually enjoy the bulk of Claymore as a series. I know many people dislike the show due to a subpar ending (Not poorly written, just sort of a cliff-hanger. Perhaps open to a sequel? Fingers crossed!).

Story: 8 out of 10 The story behind Claymore is a fairly simple one to follow. The setting is a medieval-esque, European feel world, and demons are on the prowl... See full review

Welcome to the NHK!

Jan 18, 2012

Regardless of your opinion to the series, Welcome to the NHK should be appreciated as a well-made anime solely for the fact that it encompasses so many different genres. You can find a little bit of everything in the series, which is what any great show should be looking for.

Story: 6 out of 10
Welcome to the NHK jumps back and forth between focuses. At times you think it is a series about a Hikikimori, then you think it's about his dream to be a video game designer, then you think it's about his relationship with Misaki. The fact of the matter is, the storyline is all and none of these if... See full review

Basilisk

Jan 2, 2012

Basilisk was one of those series you watch to capture some of the magic early animes had on your mind as a young kid. I excepted a series that played out like Naruto, but not as childish, and I certainly found that and more in this series.

Story: 7 out of 10
At it's heart, this is the most told tales of all time. Star crossed lovers, in love, but unable to be together. Romeo and Juliet, and the likes, etc. Two warring factions of ninja have a several hundred year feud being fought, even though none of the ninja seem to know why. The male heir to one family, and the female heir to the other fall... See full review

Nodame Cantabile

Dec 11, 2011

Let me begin this review by stating that although I am not a musician, I have studied the arts, and do have a profound respect for instruments. My fiancé was lead violin, my parents played in highschool, and the majority of my friends played in band or orchestra as well. I was never strong-willed enough to take up an instrument, but I do have a love for them. That being said, i absolutely loved Nodame Cantabile.

Kimi ga Aruji de Shitsuji ga Ore de

Oct 31, 2011

They Are My Noble Masters turned into quite a pleasant surprise for me. I walked into it expecting screw-ball and ecchi humor, and instead walked out with a genuinely sweet story. Sure, the low-brow comedy was there, but the ending also attempted to be sweet (although cheesy and/or cliche.)

Story: 7 out of 10
The story of TAMNM plays out essentially just like you'd expect from reading the synopsis. A brother and sister appear (insert casual incest joke), they run into a rich women (insert accidental grope joke), and they end up getting a job at the mansion (insert incest and... See full review

Infinite Stratos

Oct 30, 2011

I am not typically a huge harem/ecchi comedy fan, but after I watch a serious anime, I like to "dive" into these guys to try and loosen myself back up. Luckily, Infinite Stratos (IS) was exactly what I needed. A lighthearted comedy that didn't try to be anything other than what it was: A harem comedy revolving around the use of mecha.

Story: 5 out of 10
Story was perhaps the most average I could possibly think of (in terms of harem/ecchi comedy). A boy ends up in an all girls school for being able to pilot an IS mech. This has never happened for a boy before, so of course he is... See full review

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Oct 25, 2011

I will try to be as logical as I can with this review, but allow me to say first and foremost, this is an emotional series. People who cannot get wrapped up in that torrent of melodrama and angst, probably won't enjoy the series that much. Then again, I'm not usually that kind of man, and I did fall in love with the bittersweet and tender moments presented in Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Boku0tachi wa Mada Shiranai (AnoHana).

Story: 9 out of 10
As much as I want to just puff up my chest and give the series a 10, I just cannot bring myself to do it. Certainly not because the story was... See full review

Gosick

Oct 23, 2011

Gosick is easily the best anime I've seen in years. Just having come off of rewatching one of my personal favorite series, Spice and Wolf, I didn't think another series had the potential to drag me away from my thoughts, and into theirs, but they did. Gosick’s only flaw is that it is paced poorly in the beginning, allowing the ending to really hit you hard. This may push some viewers away, but I strongly encourage you to stay with it!

Story: 9 out of 10
The story of Gosick feels like a reflection of Russian literature. A time-spanning tale of romance amongst war, the lose of youth... See full review

Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka

Oct 21, 2011

Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka. I don't believe I've ever seen such a mediocre piece of cliché anime wrap up so wonderfully. What I mean by this, is that for hosting a cast of complete stereotype characters, ecchi screwball humor, and overly melodramatic dialogue, AInSS ended on a seriously heart-warming note.

Story: 7 out of 10
The story for AInSS is peculiar, in that it is a very typical school life/harem series, but adds in numerous elements to try and stand alone. This does not work in the grand scheme of things, but does make it easier to watch.
The story begins as a brother and... See full review

Otome Youkai Zakuro

Oct 12, 2011

When I reached out and started to watch Otome Youkai Zakuro, I was hoping that I could feel a little of the sublime love I got from watching Spice and Wolf. I was disappointed at first, but if you are well-read on my reviews, you know I try very hard not to be biased. That being said, forgetting the hole in my chest, yearning for more Spice and Wolf-esque romance and storytelling, OYZ was honestly not all that bad.

Story: 5 out of 10

Spice and Wolf II

Oct 6, 2011

Spice and Wolf was the anime that proved to be that a well written romance can exist in the anime world, without resorting to cartoony comedic devices and waxy melodrama. Truth be told, even as a hetero male, I have fallen madly in love with this series, and the second season was an incredible thrill ride to compliment the slow-paced romance the first series presented.

Story: 10 out of 10
(Editors note: One of the ONLY series to ever receive a 10 from me) The second season of Spice and Wolf plays out very similar to the first, except some minor changes. For starters, the storyline... See full review

The Sacred Blacksmith

Sep 14, 2011

Sacred Blacksmith, why couldn't you have been built like a toaster instead of a blender? Why couldn't you start off with something raw and wonderful, and then sat for awhile, before finally popping out at us, and being a delicious treat? Instead you carried on like a blender, haphazardly tossing in ingrediants that didn't always mesh, and creating a jumbled mess, hardly recognizable from your intriguing beginning.
(Editors Note: Never review on an empty stomach.)

Samurai 7

Sep 13, 2011

Samurai 7 was an anime that was full of great highs, and horrible lows. I have not seen the original "The Seven Samurai" movie (which is nuts, considering I'm such a cinema lover), so don't expect me to draw any similarities between the two.

Story: 9 out of 10.
Story was, to me, the best of the entire series. Very classic samurai tale, told in a very interesting Miyazaki-esque future. The story plays out as a group of farmers head to the big city to hire 7 samurai, with nothing but rice for payment. All the samurai have fun and interesting personalities, but what really makes... Angel Beats!

Sep 5, 2011

I don't understand why people are so harsh to Angel Beats. I believe it is easily the best series I've watched all year. At only 13 episodes, it becomes something special, and leaves us before we grow sick of it. I understand I haven't yet seen The Melcholy of Haruhi-chan, but does having a similar title make a series any less special? That's just being obviously biased :[

For those of you that have seen the 7.5, and think the series isn't worth watching, I assure you that even though all of these sections or score don't beat the fact that this show has that certain "x factor" about it. No matter how I complain about each section, the show still grew on me, and I do love it.

Story: 8 out of 10
Story was a difficult section to rank, because it is carried out in a unique fashion. Most animes (and shows in general, of course) progress by either plotline, or character. Chobits decides to find a middle man and progresses by character arcs if you will... See full review

Daughter of Twenty Faces

Aug 7, 2011

Daughter of Twenty Faces... what a peculiar combination of highs and lows. The first arc of "gentle men thieves" was so crazy interesting, why would you end on the low "mad scientist scheme" note? Why would you make a character as brilliant and dynamic as Chico, and then make every other character innoteworthy or experience little to no growth. Whatever their reason, Chico as a character has completely made this series great in my eyes.

ATTENTION!: This review will be presented with the phrase "Arc 1 and Arc 2", this is to distinguish the wonderful first half of... See full review

Tales of the Abyss

Aug 1, 2011

Before I go into this, if you are the type of person who judges a movie or show based on the book or game it was based off of, you are a fool in my eyes. If a "movie will never be as good as the book it's written off of", then you should give up your petty argument, and try judging it as a work of cinema, not as a work of literature. The thought of taking a 50 hour gameplay game, and squishing it into a 10 hour series will of course leave out very important aspects. That being said, the Video game is a GREAT video game, much as the anime is a GREAT anime, even if there was alot of important... See full review

Deadman Wonderland

Jul 21, 2011

Before jumping into this review, I can honestly say that Deadman Wonderland knocked me off my feet, and was unexpectedly, the most interesting anime I've seen in awhile.

Story: 8 out of 10
Deadman Wonderland started off insanely interesting to me, but lost a little steam as it continued. We start with a boy named Ganta, whom while in class, had all of his friends butchered in front of his eyes. This is fairly brutal, and depressing, but it gets worse. Due to some higher ups wanting him, he gets framed for the whole ordeal, and is now known as the boy who butchered his classmates. Now he has... See full review

Freezing

Jul 16, 2011

Oh Freezing, you remind me of a rollercoaster, that takes you high up into the sky, but only lets you fall a little bit before climbing back up. That is the feeling I got watching this; I would really get into it, just to be let down by a bland follow-through.

Story: 6 out of 10
Story was not the strongest point of this anime. "alien-like creatures are taking over the world, busty females must fight them, all males have to be annoying weaklings, who have the POWER OF VOICE!" These types of animes are all over the place, and for that, I felt cheated.

Rosario + Vampire Capu2

Jul 9, 2011

Wow... I was surprised to see a second season of a Harem comedy actually outdo the first for me. The second season contains alot of fan service (I thought that was why people watched these kind of series anyway?), but the storyline actually put on some big boy pants and stepped outside of the episodic way of life it had been living. (If only a little ;])

Story: 7 out of 10
In my review of the first Rosario to Vampire season, I actually gave the plotline a 4 (the lowest of all categories). The reason I did so was because there was no actual "plotline" and moreso just an episodic... See full review

Rosario to Vampire... I don't believe I've ever encountered a series quite like you before. That is not to say that the plotline is unique, or that the characters are original. I meant it as in I don't believe I;ve ever seen such a technically average series before, that I ended up liking so much.

Story: 3 out of 10
Despite me thoroughly enjoying the first season of Rosario to Vampire - and happy to start the second soon - Rosario to Vampire follows an over-used, average storyline that has been used by countless other harem comedies. Oh Demon King Daimao, you unambitious little series you. The first episode made a fairly attractive fantasy world, but somewhere along the lines you fell into hair-antennae dragons and power-ranger wanna-bes.

Story: 6 out of 10
The story for DKD is fairly cookie cutter. Magical school, check, awkward main character who turns out to secretly be very strong, check. Busty love interests show-casing a wide array of one-sided personalities? Check. All in all, a very bland series. The only saving grace, is that the first few episodes seemed legitimately promising. Princess Lover!

Princess Lover: not what I expected.

I walked into Princess Lover! expecting a sort of light-hearted, harem comedy. I'm not usually into the genre, but I figured a few cheap laughs invested into only 12 episodes would be alright, and Princess Lover! was highly recommended by a few friends. I'm pleased to say the "harem" aspect wasn't the focus of the series, and for that, I am glad.

Oh Shuffle!, you peculiar little gem of heavy hit, and light miss anime. Before reading this review, understand that my rating is high because of how I felt about the characters to the storyline, and not on a principle of "the ecchi was awesome in this series". I'm sorry to disappoint you guys out there, but if ecchi panty flashing is your thing, this anime doesn't deliver too much. It's much moreso about the relationships the characters form, and the beautiful, and gritty emotions that come with them.

Fractale

Oh Fractale, how you remind me of my beloved Last Exile. Fractale is a new sci-fi anime, and is a rarity in the anime world, in that it is short, sweet, and to the point. At only 11 episodes, this is an anime that you could easily finish in a few days, if only watching at a casual level.

Story: 8 out of 10 If I had to hook someone with a quick summary of the series Fractale, I would probably tell them "Pretty much Last Exile meets The Matrix,”. Oh Highschool of the Dead (HOTD), why do you tease my visuals with so much wonder, only to fail the delivery of content? HOTD is a visually gorgeous horror anime, and the first of it's kind to truly capture the attention of the large zombie apocalypse demographic. Despite what may come off as a harsh review, allow me to admit that for those people out there who are into (no pun intended) mindless zombie horrors, this anime has crossed it over perfectly.

Wow, I don't even know where to begin. A note for all of you abotu to read this, please read the following paragraph before ditching this anime. I am a 21 year old man, who enjoys Anime on a mostly technical stand-point. I like my dialogue well translated (subbed), I like my story lines to be literary sound, and I like my characters to be dynamic. That being said, Shiki is the greatest title I've seen all year. Tears to Tiara

Mar 21, 2011

An introductory analogy. Tears to Tiara is the child of a beautiful artist, and a brilliant writer, but as a child, it only smacks brushes on a canvas, and scribbles with a pencil. Tears to Tiara is an interesting plot-line, based on Arthurian legend, that falls short due to the horrible "melodramatic" moments that infest the series like a crack-riddled prostitute on the bad side of town.

Story: 7 out of 10 Tears to Tiara is your standard popular anime title. It is full of violence, follows European culture, and has harem-esque females with oversized breasts. The actual storyline... See full review

Understand that people who think that Xam'd is just a copy of their favorite anime, still admit that this is a great anime. Hold that in mind while reading this.   Story: 8/10 Story was a tricky part of the review to write. If I could break it up, the first half of the anime was a 7/10, and the second half was a 10/10. Chrome Shelled Regios.   Wow... just absolutely wow. For only 24 episodes, this anime had an 80 episode ambition. Infamously noted as a series for pushing too much into too little time, it was exactly as they all said. Chrome Shelled Regios was an interesting, fun anime that collapses under its own weight.   Story: Story receives a split decision from me.
