FLCL

Oct 7, 2009

Hmmm, I almost feel bad rating this bad boy since I didn't actually finish it, but I'm going to go against my better nature and do it anyway.  If you're a fan just stop reading now, because you'll probably disagree with me in a hundred different ways.  If you're not, then just begin by understanding that most people seem to find FLCL the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Personally I'd rather have a piece of sliced bread over a boat load of FLCL box sets.

Positives: There's a really good soundtrack and some fun crazy art going on.

Negatives: Yeesh, where to begin.  So I've read all the reviews about FLCL and how apparently if I didn't love it I just didn't get all the cool stuff about it, but even knowing that I'm apparently ignorant doesn't change the fact that I couldn't stand this show.

I suppose if I was on speed or something along those lines then the completely erratic nature of the show would have felt better paced, but being the more or less sober and clean cut kind of guy I am it was just too all over the place for me to enjoy.  Now don't get me wrong, when I was a kid I liked my crazy cartoons like the rest of 'em, but FLCL is just ridiculous.

I am all about watching anime that are deep and have multiple layers which you have to slowly peel away to get to the meat that's hidden inside, but I didn't feel that there was any reason to in this case.  It's just a flashy bunch of garbage designed to look like something special.  Harsh?  Maybe, but honestly, do you feel like somehow your life has been made better for having watched it?  What a stupid show.

I was going to say more, but I'm against taking the easy road so I'm going to leave this review as is.  FLCL may be all that for most folks, but for a few of us it's none of the above.

WTF does that mean? You prefer the Naruto way where they stop to explain everything?

therealjayrock: Sorry I wasn't able to fulfil your daily need for validation. Guess what? Not everyone likes what you like. I'm glad you think your enjoying FLCL makes you creatively superior and all that jazz. Hope that helps you out in life. To show I'm not simply here to break down your fragile walls of self-esteem, here's a suggestion: http://www.amazon.com/Keys-Comprehension-Help-Your-Kids/dp/0761515496/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320835585&sr=8-2

See? We can both be obnoxious! =)

I'm really surprised by the people who treat this as a great review when it's really just a comment of "Oh god I didn't get it what happened" and "I didn't get it so I'm a hipster, so edgy and cool, and everyone who liked it is too mainstream for me" whereas it is an anything but mainstream. I suppose you really just don't understand Gainax's storytelling method, it is a whole lot like some older literature in that what you read (or see) isn't exactly literal. I agree, it's not for everyone, but saying "I suppose if I was on speed <I would like the show> is a bit- no, scratch that, very- underhanded and insulting to the people who have more creative minds than you might.

I know!  It's just soooo not my type of anime.  I watched one episode and I got a headache.  I'm glad someone feels the same way.

I think to sum this series up in a sentence - it's like being punched in the face, bashed over the head, and kicked in the stomach over and over (not much different to what's happening during the series).  Definitely the worst series I've come across so far.
