Ah Claymore. If asked why I like Claymore I suppose I'd have to say it fills my need for chicks with swords chopping up demons to heavy metal episode after episode quota for the month. Err, my what? Yeah, that's right. A whole bunch of things I have about zero interest in. And yet...I love Claymore. Go figure. =)
Positives: So Claymore is a guilty pleasure of mine. Normally I'm not at all a fan of fighting anime and especially not the types where it becomes all about finding the next power-up for the following episode. Yet, there's something about Claymore that just hit the spot so perfectly for me that I ate it up and loved near every minute.
So a lot of people hate Raki, but for some reason I was not bothered by him at all. Maybe there's something in my life that made me understand the Rakis of the world, but whatever the reason their relation made sense to me and is a big part of what "worked" for me in Claymore.
I also really enjoyed just watching Clare grow and change as the shallow story unfolded. Claymore isn't plot heavy at all, but there's enough going on and enough surprises to keep you interested in what's going on and somehow that makes the endless fights very tolerable unlike most fighting shows.
Negatives: Hrm, so I didn't really love the ending. I have since learned that it veered drastically from the manga source and while I can understand why it's sad because it actually became the type of anime that I don't like as much in the last few episodes. I still enjoyed it, but having heard about the manga storyline I can both understand the changes and wish they hadn't been made.
Other than that Claymore was just one of those fun romps about a chick with a sword chopping up demons to heavy metal episode after episode. I'm sure there are a number of you out there who are like me and are currently wondering why you would ever watch such a thing, but here's my challenge to you. Watch the first three episodes, and if you don't find yourself pleasantly surprised then don't watch the rest. I bet some of you will be surprised to find you too have a new guiltly pleasure. =)
