I'll try to review K-on! as the first ever review I've done.
There are a couple of problems though, the biggest is the language. English is not my native language and my grammer sucks. The second is my memory. Lucky this one is only 13 episodes and I did watch them in a four day span, but some details will be forgotten.
The next thing on the list: I HATE giving ratings. But since I'm the reviewer here, so no numbers from 1 to 10.
I will try to follow the standard in reviewing way of reviewing on Anime-Planet, covering each topic individualy. (I know, that's not the correct spelling. If it is correct, I direct your view towards the part were I said English isn't my first language.)
Welcome to High School, Join a club and be happy and eat, eat, eat your heart out.
K-on! is a story about a girl [Yui] and her girlfriends [the rest] and their 'journey' to Music Greatness. Sounds nice isn't it?
Let me warn you in advance:
It's made by the same company that did Lucky Star (and it shows). Now for all the haters, I really did like Lucky Star. For the non-haters: If you are looking for a serious music anime, You aren't going to find it here. What you will get is a lighthearted comedy about a group of girls (sounds familiar) who all have their 'special' trademark behaviour. (Or is it that Human behavioural paterns span only a couple of different behaviours: Smart/Dumb/Shy/Loud/Noisy/Irritating/Talented/Hard-working/ Ill-mannerd/Refined. Add more to your liking if needed. Out of this list, pick two: Smart-Loud, Irritating-Talented and you get your behavioural pattern. back to the review)
So now we have a group of girls who, form a band. Great! let the practice sessions begin.
The cake was NOT a lie and this anime proves it. *slight spoiler* Actually, it is better explained why Yui can eat without getting fat, than why she learns to play the guitar like that.
On to the main dish: Is the story fun? Well, that depends. Since the anime is based of the manga, and the manga is still not finished the anime has no real ending. That said, the story is....
Let me rephrase that: There is no real story worth mentioning, but than again I did warn you in the beginning of the review. What you get to see however is pleasing. It's not so over the top as Lucky Star, but still the show has some funny parts.
I guess it has something to do with the 'bigger than the sum of it parts' thing.
In short: The story has just begon, 13 episodes and they ate cake in 13 of them, Guitah was dressed-up in 3 of them and a schoolyear passed. How much did they accomplish as a band? Not that much. But I have the strange feeling we will be seeing a 2nd season somewhere in the future. Which is a good thing imho.
This anime is drawn in a somewhat 'moe' style, so expect much 'cute' stuff. Thats not all though, the backdrops are nice and realistic, the instruments are looking great, and the overal view of it is pretty good. If you've seen lucky star, this looks about the same quality wise, but the characters are much better drawn.
A small note about the OP en ED, the animation in it looks good. But it really hasn't that much in common with what you're going to see in the anime.
Now, I'm not really a soundbuff. But since it's still an anime with a music theme you get what you can expect. Voice acting is good, background sounds and effects are good.
On to the main part: The music.
The OP and ED are fenominal. Instant in my top of favorite OP and EDs and the songs that the band preform are also quite good, they really fit the characters who play them. The only thing I don't know is if the Voice Actors, also sing the songs. I think so, but I'm still not sure. (because I didn't pay attention to how the singing was sounding, I was too busy humming along :S )
Aside from the story, the most important ingredient in the series for me. You can't set these two apart (Story and Characters). In this case, the characters fit the story well. I'm not sure how the story fits the characters however.
You have your avarage high school girl group as told earlier. They seem to grow somewhat character wise in the story, which is nice, but that isn't really important in the story as the story itself is just a backdrop for a run of the mill slice of life genre anime.
Mayby it changes later on in the series as the anime spans only their first schoolyear. The characters are fleshed out though, you know why someone does something (yay unreadable) and you can predict their behabiour somewhat. I really liked the characters, they are a well fit to the story and they behave somewhat understandable.
I guess you can sump it u as i did earlier: This anime is more than the sum of it's parts.
It's fun for what it is, but don't begin to watch it as a second lucky star, or a deep anime about a band. On both occasions you will be disappointed.
It's just a fun anime to watch. nothing less, nothing more. The story isn't great, the art isn't great, the sound is great however and the characters are good.
It's not likely to start a revolution because of its innovation to the genre, but still: You won't be dissapointed to watch it. And it wiill mayby be a summer hit.
