Wolf's Rain

Dec 11, 2010

Wolf's rain

If there is one thing that I have learned in my not to long existence on this earth, it would have to be that no matter, whether it be man or beast, we are all just trying to reach "paradise". This is the extent of what the story of Wolf's Rain are trying to accomplish. Of course there is always something or someone who always wants to stand in our way of destiny. But we must always keep fighting, moving, searching.

Animation has quite the pristine look about it. Vibrant, vigorous colors from the shows backgrounds to the characters themselves. Coming out in 2003 from one of my favorite Anime Houses, Bones (Darker Than Black, Full Metal Alchemist,Soul Eater, etc.)

Soundtrack is just above par. While the opening theme hits the eardrum like nails to a chalkboard.(What was heck was Yôko Kanno thinking!) The ending theme is a beautiful, melancholy ballad. The internal soundtrack is a delightful mixture of light and heavy orchestrated strings.

Characters are very interesting. An enriching backstory to the characters brings a wonderful element of depth. Sadly, about half way into the show I started to feel cheated. In the middle of the the 30 episode series, episode after episode kept recapping the same content you already learn about these personas. If I wasn't watching this show in marathon a run and had caught this on television, I would feel extremely cheated. I feel even worse for the folks who got the series in its original run. I would have never expected the creator of Cowboy Bebop and an outstanding anime company such as Bones to cut corners.

Overall I must say that it is a watch. The beginning will wrap you in. You will find the place where I suggest some should skip the four episode recap for the Otaku marathon watcher like myself. Towards the end without giving away to much, it is just down right depressing. A solid watch.
