Black Lagoon

Mar 8, 2013

Finished my 2nd time through BL and BL2, when I first watched this series I was floored, I didn't really know much about the series at the time but was told I had to watch it. It instantly made its way into my top 10 and has never moved since. So, does the show stand the test of time? Absolutely. Story: Rarity among my lists and probably one of the few in my top 10, this title's story wasn't heavy on plot. All the characters had stories and they delved into them a little bit, but for the most part this was an action flic through and through. The overall story in the show just kind of filtered itself... Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

Sep 5, 2011

My first time watching this anime years ago instantly solidified itself as one of my top 5 all time favorites and easily one of the best anime ever made from my point of view. I just sat down to re-watch it in the English dubbed version and was not disappointed in the least. Story: As far as stories go you will be hard pressed to find one better written and presented in such a tidy and well rounded package as this. It keeps you guessing all the while and at the same time making you feel like part of the show as things progress. You find yourself truly enjoying the adventure even during the slowest parts... Chobits

Jul 4, 2011

Chobits was one of the first anime series I ever watched from beginning to end nonstop. At the time I was living with a girl and we watched it together and neither of us slept for the whole night we had the DVDs for. Needless to say, we were both blown away at the time. Now years later, after seeing it again and after having seen so many other great shows, it still hasn't lost is charm and entertainment value. Story: At first the story seems kind of dull, lonely boy has nothing really going for him yet, has little funds, and no real friends, but one day finds an android in the trash and drags her home... History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi

Nov 8, 2010

HSDK has the dubious distinction of being my #1 anime of all time. It's the only anime series I've watched more than 10 times now and continue to do so as time goes on. It never fails to bring a smile to my eyes, yes eyes, a task infinitely harder to do than just making me smile with my mouth alone. It's an anime who's sum does not equal it's parts since the only thing I rated at a perfect ten here was it's characters. Story: Truth be told there's not a huge amount of story here. Boy meets girl, boy gets beaten up by girl, boy falls in love and tries to become a martial artist to protect a girl that... See full review

Toradora!

Oct 11, 2009

Story/Plot:This was surprisingly siimple and straight forward. There wasn't a lot of beating around the bush for the most part. It was cute, I laughed, I teared up, I got annoyed, there was a lot to this show and it was completely unexpected. The flow of the show as good, but it kind of dragged on in a few spots, still nothing major and I barely noticed it.Animation:There wasn't anything particularly wrong with the animation, but it wasn't particularly stunning or exceptional. I don't give points for pink/blue hair... then again, these are minor issues, for the most part the animation was fluid and pleasing... See full review

Summer Wars

May 28, 2010

Just sat down to watch this movie for the second time and loved it just as much!Story:Boy meets girl, boy likes girl, boy gets propositioned to be fake b/f in front of her family.... well ok so this doesn't sound like your typical love story, that's because it's not. Really what you're getting is a bit of shounen action, comedy relief set on a life or death struggle from a world wide web hacking AI backdrop. The story was quite good, had many twists some predictable, some not, and really just kept me glued to the screen for the whole hour and half it played.Animation:I'd like to say that the animation was... Ghost in the Shell 2.0

May 26, 2010

I was a little disappointed though unsurprised that this really was just a remake of the original GitS movie, really some of it was a pointless CGI update, the original movie was outstanding as it was so the need for the remake is lost on me.Story:As anyone may already know due to it's popularity and longevity, the story and world is spectacular. It's engaging, dynamic, and keeps you wanting more when it's over. Whomever the writer(s) was/were they deserved awards for it.Animation:Again, the anime was of course top notch, there wasn't much you could argue about this title being bad considering it was years... Den-noh Coil

Jan 13, 2010

Story:I didn't really expect to enjoy this show as much as I did, and while there were a few things about it wasn't overly impressed with the story was entertaining, compelling and satisfying. It was also quite unique and nearly believable in it's realistic portrayal of possible technology bridging the spiritual and real worlds accidentally. The fact that we aren't too far away from the technology represented in those glasses adds a healthy dose of reality to the show's theme.Animation:At first I wasn't sure if I really liked the characters designs too much, but soon it grew on me and I ended up loving them... Xam'd: Lost Memories

Oct 3, 2009

Story/Plot: 9 A great story and well planned out way to tell it. There wasn't anything I didn't truly understand or get annoyed with in the long run. Everything seemed to fit and fall into place at the right time. Only mildly predictable, the kind that makes you feel smart for figuring it out early.Animation: 10 Brilliant quality animations, fluid, great designs, beautiful scenery, and no exaggerated cartoon stuff. This anime reeked of awesome. I could say more but what would be the point?Sounds/Music: 8 Decent sounds, great music... there wasn't much to gripe about here if at all. Music rarely... Scrapped Princess

Apr 25, 2017

In my ongoing quest to watch my own top anime list, to see if the shows stand up to the test of time, I decided to pick this little gem of a show and I was glad I did. Story: Very few shows I've seen have the fully contained story in a single season, of those that do very few pull off the feat well. This is among those enjoyable few, then and now. Story is relatively distinct and still straight forward, ranges from ploding along to sudden jumps forward in plot but they don't tease you with information. You are left with a pretty good idea of what's going on way before the main trio is told, not that... See full review

Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040

Mar 13, 2013

This title deserves a little bit of background information because it's got a rather sordid and colorful past. The original version of this show was dropped by one production company only to be picked up and sued by another production company for breach of contract. As a result, the story/series Bubblegum Crisis (2033) was never truly finished (going through a long drawn out legal process), it had a few OVA's to try to correct that but was never well done or received. 2040 is essentially a remake from beginning to end of the story proper. It did spark several spin offs during that period, but I have not... See full review

Clannad After Story

Jan 13, 2010

Imagine, for a moment if you would, that you're laying down on an operating table and the Doctor leans over and smiles to you kindly, says everything is going to be just fine right before he quite literally rips your heart out, shreds it in front of your dying face, then pieces it back together magically and says "Nanchatte" (just kidding) while putting it back in.That would quite literally be what Clannad After Story does to you in a nut shell. Of course there's a lot more to it than that but I wanted to warn you before hand because, quite frankly, I had to wait a few days before I wrote this... See full review

Sakurada Reset

Dec 24, 2018

This was one very hard to follow story, due to not only a lot of time skipping you are also challenged with timelines being altered almost every episode. More over, often things are left unsaid or unexplained so that the mystery is left for later episodes to explain. It takes a lot of memory and comprehention to keep up, not something everyone can do. Perhaps, in that way, it can be considered a failure as a show. Story: What starts out as a story about a boy trying to help a girl detached from her emotions to find her humanity again eventually evolves into a multifaceted story that deals with a wide... Say "I love you."

Dec 13, 2014

Moral of the story; no one is without their scars, I think? Well, it's a very endearing love story too. Story: A wonderfully paced romance with speckling of comedy but a bit too much drama for my tastes. Which probably means if you're into romance dramas with a little comedy relief you're probably going to love this one. My only real problem with it was the final episode, just felt very forced and almost seemed more of a stumble at the end of a wonderful run. Personal opinion aside, it wasn't anything bad just how they did it which irked me. Animation: Definitely a well drawn and "true to... See full review

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

Jan 3, 2013

So the hero has vanquished the Dark Lord, spared the life of the Dark Lord's daughter, and saved the kingdom, what does he have left to do? Why, do it all over again! Story: While it probably isn't the first story ever to do it, it was the first one I've ever seen with this concept. Picture if you will, the aftermath of the hero's glorious victory and now he has wanders off in search of a new adventure?  Nay, he takes his booty and runs back to his home world where hilarity and many action packed hijinx ensue! I went into this anime with little to no information on it and I'm kind of glad I did... See full review

Ristorante Paradiso

Sep 13, 2011

Story: At first glance this sells itself as just another romance story set in Rome, not that there are tons of anime set in Rome but the romance aspect is a dime a dozen. What you get, however, is a very complex network of relationships and back stories to go with just about every support character as well as the 2 mains. One might think this would dilute the story itself with so few episodes to work with but the plot management was top notch. It had such a wonderful flow to it and the progression was never halted in the name of character development, a rare treat. Animation: At first I got a little put... See full review

Amagami SS

Jan 2, 2011

For me this show was an unusual yet welcome concept. Take 6 girls, 1 guy, and tell a love story for each pairing separately through the same year of the guy's life. At first I was thinking that the progression was extremely fast for a 25 ep show but as I figured out later, it was more akin to 6 4-5 ep shows based on the same characters. If you still don't understand what I mean read the whole review and then post below if you're still confused. Story: Each story had its different merits, some I liked more than others but none I disliked except for the final episode which was a story in of itself... See full review

Akira

May 28, 2010

Akira was the first anime I saw that I knew as anime. Quite possibly caused me to actively seek out more of it's kind though very little was available at the time of it's US release.Story:Honestly, the story was a bit convoluted, you were kind of thrust into the middle of it and expect to know what was going on. Eventually they were able to flesh out more of the details as the movie progressed but it made for hard story telling and probably lost many less determined individuals. Looking on it, however, the story was quite good and had an interesting flow, kept me engaged.Animation:Even many years later this... See full review

Story:There was just the slightest hint of shoujo-ai going on here but nothing so blatant as what I've seen recently. Not that I personally care about it one way or the other. The story was pretty good even if it was just a bit unrealistic. I think they tried just a bit too hard at times but it didn't come off too badly. Pretty much just an enjoyable entertainment worth your time at only 13 eps.Animation:The artwork was pretty stellar, something you'd expect from this particular time really and while some things did stick out a bit as a bit above average, the rest was pretty much your typical... Log Horizon

Nov 29, 2014

My review for Sword Art Online v2.0 Lite.... >.> *coughs* Ok so the timing and resemblance to SAO is going to make it compared to that anime forever. Which is frankly a shame, as the two shows are completely different in flavor.

Story:

So the first few minutes in or even if you read a synopsis somewhere, you get the idea that the premiss behind the show isn't any different from another recent and very popular show. There are subtle differences to start but it's undeniably the same, still, as things progress you will quickly see more and more differences in how the story unfolds and where... See full review

Mardock Scramble: The First Compression

Sep 28, 2013

I went into this movie without a clue about it except it's future setting and I must say the first 5 minutes of the movie really set the tone for the whole thing. Very blunt and graphic progression through out. Don't let my "grim" account of it in no way shade my enjoyment of this title. I decided not to do a full on review yet simply because I haven't seen the 3rd (and what I assume to be the final) movie in this series. And a such, to me, the story and experience is yet incomplete. Not that I shy from giving reviews on an incomplete viewing but I have to have very strong feelings about the... See full review

Story: Ah, a typical love story of boy meets girl, boy despises girl, boy gets mercilessly pursued by girl... well, OK that's not really typical... Still, it's a slightly unoriginal theme but one that's set with interesting characters with talents and goals set in a college backdrop. The story was well told and fun, if a bit slow, to watch. Animation: The actual animation, as in animated/moving/in action, was actually quite good. However, things take turns for the worse with pans on still frame pictures, random CGI scenes... The Legend of the Legendary Heroes

Jan 24, 2011

I wasn't sure how I would feel about a show titled Legend of the Legendary Heroes when I first saw the translated name. I mean how unimaginative can you get? Still what you get is far more than what the title gives you... Story: Firstly, I would like to state that this is a bit more than I would normally give a show that's "incomplete" since it's still got a second season yet to be produced. The story through this 24 episode show isn't done and so on the basis that there is a second season on the way I rated it as high as I would having seen the second half already. Now, onto the actual story's... See full review

Red Garden

May 26, 2010

Right off I'd like to say if you decide to watch Red Garden I highly recommend you also watch Dead Girls afterward. Being a kind of after story well concludes the girls endings that Red Garden kind of leaves a bit open.Story:There was a lot to this title, I enjoyed it once I got past all the melodrama. At first it kind of went a story telling in a pulp fiction style, and poorly at that, but thankfully it moved away from this style and continued in a more linear fashion. It had pretty decent progression from ep to ep and made it well worth watching after you're into it. Really only the first ep was hard to... See full review

Re:ZERO: Starting Life in Another World

Jan 31, 2017

There are lots of things I liked and disliked about this show and for the most part I really hope it gets a sequil. Mainly I say this because of the massive amount of loose ends just left all over the place. The main protagonist being the biggest glaring issue of them all, more on that later. Story: It's not a new theme, person from our world gets pulled into another one and has to learn how to cope with their new situation, but what's different with this is how he's given no direction to go, no one to curse or thank for bringing him there, at least this is not yet explained. This is the crux of what's... See full review

Golden Time

Dec 6, 2016

Scary woman meets laid back amnesiac; trials, tribulations and troubles ensue. Story: I wasn't expecting this to be very good in all honesty. The synopsis sounded out right dumb. But when I watched this for the first time, and yes there has now been a second time which is why I decided to write this review, I was more than a little surprised at what I got. The story is slow to start and even a little confusing but as it gets rolling you realize you're in for a little ride. Animation: It's not that hard to get a rom/com drawn right, and they didn't disappoint here. The characters are adorable, easy to tell... See full review

The Garden of Words

Jul 27, 2016

So for such a short film at only 45 minutes I've gotta hand it to the writer in the ability to tell a sweet love story as this in so little time. It wasn't perfect, and it wasn't easy to follow but for the most part the anime was well worth the watch. Story: Really short and really low on the depth here due to the length but what was given is stellar work either way. Had the writer been given a full movie's worth of time to develop it further it really would have finished this off. Animation: The real jewel in this title is definitely the environmental artwork. Shuffle!

Feb 17, 2012

The first time I saw Shuffle! I was enamored of it, several years later after browsing my Netflix options I found they had the show available for streaming and figured what the heck. Several other shows I've found the same way, having watched them again, did stand the test of time and English conversion, will this one follow suit? Sadly, the answer to that question, from my perspective, is not really. Story: Originally I remembered this story as endearing, funny, and interesting to watch. What I got was a ton of over used anime plot devices and tired character clichés. I had at one point thought... See full review

Otome Youkai Zakuro

Sep 13, 2011

A sweet tale weaved with your typical parts. Story: All in all, there wasn't much here that you couldn't find in half of the other shows like it. A pretty standard fair with oddly drawn characters thrown in to make it seem unique. The progression had a very little stagnation but the fact that it was only 13 episodes didn't leave much room for padding. It was still a cute little rom/com set in what I can only assume to be an alternate world where monsters and humans lived side by side. Animation: A very prettily drawn show, lots of detail and well designed characters and buildings. It's not something... See full review

Nov 11, 2010

Story: This was actually a pretty good watch, my one real complaint would be the ending, it left just a few too many loose ends in my opinion. Well maybe only one major one and a few minor but the major one was the problem, and no I will not go into details because it would be a spoiler. Animation: Great artwork, nice character designs, no rainbow hair colors, realistic hair styles, decent city design, realistic vehicles... there wasn't anything bad about it for the most part. I guess it's main issues is that it didn't wow me or I would have put it at a perfect 10. After shows like Clannad and it'd ilk... See full review
