Golden Time

on

Scary woman meets laid back amnesiac; trials, tribulations and troubles ensue. Story: I wasn't expecting this to be very good in all honesty. The synopsis sounded out right dumb. But when I watched this for the first time, and yes there has now been a second time which is why I decided to write this review, I was more than a little surprised at what I got. The story is slow to start and even a little confusing but as it gets rolling you realize you're in for a little ride. Animation: It's not that hard to get a rom/com drawn right, and they didn't disappoint here. The characters are adorable, easy to tell... See full review

The Asterisk War (2016)

on

How many ways can we mess up a free sequel? Let us count the ways. Story: There is a story here, it just doesn't matter very much. It's really way more about the infrequent and poorly executed fights so in the end they skipped substance for eye candy and failed horribly. Animation: For an "action" anime the fluid colorful style is sure to turn some heads but it clashes horribly with the high tech theme which is often way more ridged. Sound: It has it's moments, the voices aren't totally annoying, the musical scores are enjoyable, and they actually make use of English during one episode... See full review

Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren't They?

on

A perfect example of what happens when Dues Ex Machina runs rampant. Story: I guess there was a story here, but it's disjointed and unfinished nature left more than a little something to be desired. What makes it worse is the fact that it had real potential to be a great anime but fell so short of the mark because it never went anywhere that you're just left with a bitter taste. Animation: Actually a decent looking show with it's stylized characters, well done scenes, and everything else having a solid flow to it. I can't say... See full review

Akame ga Kill!

on

So in one of my random viewing sprees of anime, this was a title I decided to muddle through after realizing what the show was gonna start doing. Sure enough they started dropping like flies. It wasn't until later that I found out the anime had almost nothing to do with the original work from the manga. This is one of those shows that has all the manga fans scratching their heads thinking "wtf, did I just watch?". Story: So there is a story here, sadly it's so cliche and poorly done that I was extremely disappointed. It wasn't until after I finished this that I found out about the manga which... Say "I love you."

on

Moral of the story; no one is without their scars, I think? Well, it's a very endearing love story too. Story: A wonderfully paced romance with speckling of comedy but a bit too much drama for my tastes. Which probably means if you're into romance dramas with a little comedy relief you're probably going to love this one. My only real problem with it was the final episode, just felt very forced and almost seemed more of a stumble at the end of a wonderful run. Personal opinion aside, it wasn't anything bad just how they did it which irked me. Animation: Definitely a well drawn and "true to... See full review

Log Horizon

My review for Sword Art Online v2.0 Lite.... >.> *coughs* Ok so the timing and resemblance to SAO is going to make it compared to that anime forever. Which is frankly a shame, as the two shows are completely different in flavor.

Story:

So the first few minutes in or even if you read a synopsis somewhere, you get the idea that the premiss behind the show isn't any different from another recent and very popular show. There are subtle differences to start but it's undeniably the same, still, as things progress you will quickly see more and more differences in how the story unfolds and where... See full review

The epitome of all that is wrong with Mecha shows, this one made errors beyond that even... Story: OK, so there was a story here, but they glossed it over the whole way, half the time I wasn't really sure what I was watching except a poorly executed romance of the three kindoms clone, complete with both science and magic. They never really explain what's going on very well and as a result you feel next to nothing for or against any of the characters. Animation: At the very start I was reminded of 80's style animation, not the good kind. Choppy, washed out with little to no detail what so ever. Really... See full review

Story: What story? It was a story? I felt it was a video journal instead, and a very painful one to watch at that. I felt so sorry for her the whole freaking show, it was very hard to finish. Nothing more can I say about it other than it just wasn't my style of entertainment and someone else would more than probably love this show 100%. So please keep in mind regarding my scores that it is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. Animation: This wasn't as bad as I thought it looked to start with, after a while the whole thing grew on me visually. Overall I felt like I was watching a 4 block style... See full review

Mardock Scramble: The First Compression

on

I went into this movie without a clue about it except it's future setting and I must say the first 5 minutes of the movie really set the tone for the whole thing. Very blunt and graphic progression through out. Don't let my "grim" account of it in no way shade my enjoyment of this title. I decided not to do a full on review yet simply because I haven't seen the 3rd (and what I assume to be the final) movie in this series. And a such, to me, the story and experience is yet incomplete. Not that I shy from giving reviews on an incomplete viewing but I have to have very strong feelings about the... See full review

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040

on

This title deserves a little bit of background information because it's got a rather sordid and colorful past. The original version of this show was dropped by one production company only to be picked up and sued by another production company for breach of contract. As a result, the story/series Bubblegum Crisis (2033) was never truly finished (going through a long drawn out legal process), it had a few OVA's to try to correct that but was never well done or received. 2040 is essentially a remake from beginning to end of the story proper. It did spark several spin offs during that period, but I have not... See full review

Finished my 2nd time through BL and BL2, when I first watched this series I was floored, I didn't really know much about the series at the time but was told I had to watch it. It instantly made its way into my top 10 and has never moved since. So, does the show stand the test of time? Absolutely. Story: Rarity among my lists and probably one of the few in my top 10, this title's story wasn't heavy on plot. All the characters had stories and they delved into them a little bit, but for the most part this was an action flic through and through. The overall story in the show just kind of filtered itself... So the hero has vanquished the Dark Lord, spared the life of the Dark Lord's daughter, and saved the kingdom, what does he have left to do? Why, do it all over again! Story: While it probably isn't the first story ever to do it, it was the first one I've ever seen with this concept. Picture if you will, the aftermath of the hero's glorious victory and now he has wanders off in search of a new adventure?  Nay, he takes his booty and runs back to his home world where hilarity and many action packed hijinx ensue! Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy

Anime's that stand the test of time, language conversion, and even culture differences. This title didn't make it. Originally when I saw this anime I wasn't very deep into my anime/manga obsession and I truly enjoyed, nay, loved this anime. What I saw was the subbed/Japanese "original", what I'm reviewing is the dubbed/American "conversion". I don't really know the specifics of who did it or when it was made but the dub was what I'd consider standard overly edited American junk. More to the point, after years and years of anime viewing, along with hundreds upon hundreds of titles... See full review

Recollections of a Certain Pilot

Yes, another reivew where my Overall score doesn't refelect the actual scoring of the rest. Story: The Princess and the Pauper er Pilot. Cute story, well told over the corse of a few days with mild flashbacks. Sadly, the main reason that I liked this story was also ultimately why I didn't like it... Unfortunately I can't explain why without dropping a major spoiler and that is something I don't do in my reviews. Animation: Nothing I wouldn't expect from an anime from this era, and perhaps that's made me a bit jaded in this regard, still the designs were well done, beautifully presented and in the end... Shuffle!

on

The first time I saw Shuffle! I was enamored of it, several years later after browsing my Netflix options I found they had the show available for streaming and figured what the heck. Several other shows I've found the same way, having watched them again, did stand the test of time and English conversion, will this one follow suit? Sadly, the answer to that question, from my perspective, is not really. Story: Originally I remembered this story as endearing, funny, and interesting to watch. What I got was a ton of over used anime plot devices and tired character clichés. I had at one point thought... See full review

A show that would probably appeal to most ultimately served to piss me off at every turn. Story: On the surface I can say that the story and plot here are actually quite good, I had a little trouble at the start following what was going on due to just how much information they bombard you with but in the end it wasn't difficult. They had a few points where they go off on a tangent which seemingly has absolutely nothing to do with the main story but that's not exactly a new thing for anime in general, still it felt extremely out of place here. Animation: I had points where I thought the artwork was... See full review

Story: At first glance this sells itself as just another romance story set in Rome, not that there are tons of anime set in Rome but the romance aspect is a dime a dozen. What you get, however, is a very complex network of relationships and back stories to go with just about every support character as well as the 2 mains. One might think this would dilute the story itself with so few episodes to work with but the plot management was top notch. It had such a wonderful flow to it and the progression was never halted in the name of character development, a rare treat. Animation: At first I got a little put... See full review

A sweet tale weaved with your typical parts. Story: All in all, there wasn't much here that you couldn't find in half of the other shows like it. A pretty standard fair with oddly drawn characters thrown in to make it seem unique. The progression had a very little stagnation but the fact that it was only 13 episodes didn't leave much room for padding. It was still a cute little rom/com set in what I can only assume to be an alternate world where monsters and humans lived side by side. Animation: A very prettily drawn show, lots of detail and well designed characters and buildings. It's not something... See full review

A show where nothing really is as it seems or should be. Story: On reading the synopsis the show seemed like it had a lot of potential, and indeed after a few eps it was shaping out to be a decent story. Sadly as things progressed, or lack of progression I should say, I found myself bored and confused as to what direction the anime was taking. In the end it just didn't really go anywhere other than to seemingly setup for a second season. Though even if there does end up being a second one I'd more than likely pass on it. The plot line was stagnant at best and haphazard/directionless at... See full review

My first time watching this anime years ago instantly solidified itself as one of my top 5 all time favorites and easily one of the best anime ever made from my point of view. I just sat down to re-watch it in the English dubbed version and was not disappointed in the least. Story: As far as stories go you will be hard pressed to find one better written and presented in such a tidy and well rounded package as this. It keeps you guessing all the while and at the same time making you feel like part of the show as things progress. You find yourself truly enjoying the adventure even during the slowest parts... Dance in the Vampire Bund

Story: Thankfully the story had substance to it but the ultimate issue here is that it's based on a manga that's still ongoing so has very little closure. Whether or not they plan on more seasons I don't know and even so that probably wouldn't change my opinion of this show much though I would admittedly watch them should they become available. The main problem I had with the show as it's inconsistency, it had a few conflicting problems with their plot developments which I think could have been avoided had they just planned for it better. I think this had a lot more potential and seems to have a lot more... See full review

Chobits was one of the first anime series I ever watched from beginning to end nonstop. At the time I was living with a girl and we watched it together and neither of us slept for the whole night we had the DVDs for. Needless to say, we were both blown away at the time. Now years later, after seeing it again and after having seen so many other great shows, it still hasn't lost is charm and entertainment value. Story: At first the story seems kind of dull, lonely boy has nothing really going for him yet, has little funds, and no real friends, but one day finds an android in the trash and drags her home... Just picking anime at random can pretty much be equated to playing roulette, you got a pretty slim chance at winning but boy howdy can you find some glorious flops. Sadly this title falls into that category. Story: There really wasn't much of an actual story here, at least not until you get to the final ep, mostly it's just dealing with some mysterious organization that makes girls fight each other in order to gain something that will grant their wish. Cliche, full of holes, and lacking much of anything at all. It amazes me what production companies will put out for the viewers and think it'll sell just... See full review

Still, it's a slightly unoriginal theme but one that's set with interesting characters with talents and goals set in a college backdrop. The story was well told and fun, if a bit slow, to watch. Aaah, teenage angst at it's worst.... Story: What can I say, I haven't seen a more bland, prepackaged, and overly used subject matter in a while but this pretty much takes the cake. It really doesn't get more basic or over used than this, and sadly, without resorting to major spoilers, I can't really say anything else here. I can say, though, that I've easily seen 10 different manga, 20 other anime titles, and 50 different movies, which have used the same format of which about 80-90% of them did it better. I wasn't sure how I would feel about a show titled Legend of the Legendary Heroes when I first saw the translated name. I mean how unimaginative can you get? Still what you get is far more than what the title gives you... Story: Firstly, I would like to state that this is a bit more than I would normally give a show that's "incomplete" since it's still got a second season yet to be produced. The story through this 24 episode show isn't done and so on the basis that there is a second season on the way I rated it as high as I would having seen the second half already. In any great anime there are a few intangible qualities you just might miss when you've got less experience with it. In many ways this can be a blessing because you come across a title like this one that on the surface is actually pretty good if you're still fresh into anime in general. Unfortunately the flip side is also true being that you begin to notice the little things that can unravel a perfectly good anime into one that just irks you too often. This title, for me, is such an example of what happens when you become so familiar with something that you notice all the little flaws turning a gem into a... See full review

This anime was a oddity for me. It had the queer ability to make me laugh my ass off while at the same time annoy the hell out of me. Story: To me, the main premise of the show was kinda dry, or in other words just lacked much in the way of substance. Frankly I don't think they were trying to hard here since I believe their main goal was to be funny, thankfully they at the very least achieved that. In the end, they did get kind of serious with it but they didn't try to shed the comedic value that they cultivated from episode 1. I give a lot of credit where credit is due, the one thing I can say about Card Captor Sakura is that it had a lot of charm and unique qualities about it that no other Maho Shoujo anime had before or since so far. Story: I was a bit generous on this end simply because it actually had a story to tell, it wasn't completely monster of the week and there was a definite beginning and ending to that story. The main problem here was the fact that it was very much for kids way under my age group. For me this show was an unusual yet welcome concept. Take 6 girls, 1 guy, and tell a love story for each pairing separately through the same year of the guy's life. If you still don't understand what I mean read the whole review and then post below if you're still confused.
