Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

Jan 3, 2013

So the hero has vanquished the Dark Lord, spared the life of the Dark Lord's daughter, and saved the kingdom, what does he have left to do? Why, do it all over again! Story: While it probably isn't the first story ever to do it, it was the first one I've ever seen with this concept. Picture if you will, the aftermath of the hero's glorious victory and now he has wanders off in search of a new adventure?  Nay, he takes his booty and runs back to his home world where hilarity and many action packed hijinx ensue! I went into this anime with little to no information on it and I'm kind of glad I did... See full review

Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy

Sep 3, 2012

Anime's that stand the test of time, language conversion, and even culture differences. This title didn't make it. Originally when I saw this anime I wasn't very deep into my anime/manga obsession and I truly enjoyed, nay, loved this anime. What I saw was the subbed/Japanese "original", what I'm reviewing is the dubbed/American "conversion". I don't really know the specifics of who did it or when it was made but the dub was what I'd consider standard overly edited American junk. More to the point, after years and years of anime viewing, along with hundreds upon hundreds of titles... See full review

Aishiteruze Baby

Dec 20, 2018

Cuteness incarnate carries the entire show on her back. This was one of my top anime when I originally saw it and obviously loved it. Revisiting it now I can see that I was suffering from moe overload. That's not to say this wasn't a worthwhile revisit, just that the show (sans rose colored glasses) was rife with problems, and that I am willing to forgive most of them due to the character writing on a single 5 year old. Story: Main problem this story has is it's premise; a 17 year old male highschool student with poor judgement is given guardianship of a 5 year old girl. Especially taking into... See full review

Akame ga Kill!

Dec 27, 2014

So in one of my random viewing sprees of anime, this was a title I decided to muddle through after realizing what the show was gonna start doing. Sure enough they started dropping like flies. It wasn't until later that I found out the anime had almost nothing to do with the original work from the manga. This is one of those shows that has all the manga fans scratching their heads thinking "wtf, did I just watch?". Story: So there is a story here, sadly it's so cliche and poorly done that I was extremely disappointed. It wasn't until after I finished this that I found out about the manga which... Akira

May 28, 2010

Akira was the first anime I saw that I knew as anime. Quite possibly caused me to actively seek out more of it's kind though very little was available at the time of it's US release.Story:Honestly, the story was a bit convoluted, you were kind of thrust into the middle of it and expect to know what was going on. Eventually they were able to flesh out more of the details as the movie progressed but it made for hard story telling and probably lost many less determined individuals. Looking on it, however, the story was quite good and had an interesting flow, kept me engaged.Animation:Even many years later this... See full review

Amagami SS

Jan 2, 2011

For me this show was an unusual yet welcome concept. Take 6 girls, 1 guy, and tell a love story for each pairing separately through the same year of the guy's life. At first I was thinking that the progression was extremely fast for a 25 ep show but as I figured out later, it was more akin to 6 4-5 ep shows based on the same characters. If you still don't understand what I mean read the whole review and then post below if you're still confused. Story: Each story had its different merits, some I liked more than others but none I disliked except for the final episode which was a story in of itself... See full review

Black Lagoon

Mar 8, 2013

Finished my 2nd time through BL and BL2, when I first watched this series I was floored, I didn't really know much about the series at the time but was told I had to watch it. It instantly made its way into my top 10 and has never moved since. So, does the show stand the test of time? Absolutely. Story: Rarity among my lists and probably one of the few in my top 10, this title's story wasn't heavy on plot. All the characters had stories and they delved into them a little bit, but for the most part this was an action flic through and through. The overall story in the show just kind of filtered itself... Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040

Mar 13, 2013

This title deserves a little bit of background information because it's got a rather sordid and colorful past. The original version of this show was dropped by one production company only to be picked up and sued by another production company for breach of contract. As a result, the story/series Bubblegum Crisis (2033) was never truly finished (going through a long drawn out legal process), it had a few OVA's to try to correct that but was never well done or received. 2040 is essentially a remake from beginning to end of the story proper. It did spark several spin offs during that period, but I have not... See full review

Canaan

Oct 19, 2009

Story:There was just the slightest hint of shoujo-ai going on here but nothing so blatant as what I've seen recently. Not that I personally care about it one way or the other. The story was pretty good even if it was just a bit unrealistic. I think they tried just a bit too hard at times but it didn't come off too badly. Pretty much just an enjoyable entertainment worth your time at only 13 eps.Animation:The artwork was pretty stellar, something you'd expect from this particular time really and while some things did stick out a bit as a bit above average, the rest was pretty much your typical... Cardcaptor Sakura

Jan 19, 2011

I give a lot of credit where credit is due, the one thing I can say about Card Captor Sakura is that it had a lot of charm and unique qualities about it that no other Maho Shoujo anime had before or since so far. Story: I was a bit generous on this end simply because it actually had a story to tell, it wasn't completely monster of the week and there was a definite beginning and ending to that story. The main problem here was the fact that it was very much for kids way under my age group. Half the time I was so sickened by the density of the characters, particularly Sakura herself, that I wanted to drop... See full review

Charlotte

Dec 21, 2018

This story made no sense. Start to finish I was scratching my head at the choices and actions of various characters. More over this story changes gears so often it's like watching a writer with ADD trying to write 5 different stories at the same time. Biggest problem of this one was character writing but the plots randomly fast and slow pacing didn't help things. Story: The premise, though not very original, was interesting. And really the way it was selling itself for the first half of it I figured we were going to get a fun time with a group of crazy superpowered kids rescuing other superpowered kids... Chobits

Jul 4, 2011

Chobits was one of the first anime series I ever watched from beginning to end nonstop. At the time I was living with a girl and we watched it together and neither of us slept for the whole night we had the DVDs for. Needless to say, we were both blown away at the time. Now years later, after seeing it again and after having seen so many other great shows, it still hasn't lost is charm and entertainment value. Story: At first the story seems kind of dull, lonely boy has nothing really going for him yet, has little funds, and no real friends, but one day finds an android in the trash and drags her home... Chrome Shelled Regios

Nov 8, 2009

Another title that I've seen where the sum doesn't equal the parts. What went wrong here was bad plot management and character development.Story:The story itself had a lot of potential for greatness, and in some ways it was great. Sadly due to bad plot management and a poor resolution, that is to say almost none, it just tore down what would have been a good story. Episode transitions were sometimes confusing at best, and outright nonsensical at worst. I never did get the "mini-series" in the show, it seemed like they were trying to go for something and came up short.Animation:The art here was... See full review

Clannad After Story

Jan 13, 2010

Imagine, for a moment if you would, that you're laying down on an operating table and the Doctor leans over and smiles to you kindly, says everything is going to be just fine right before he quite literally rips your heart out, shreds it in front of your dying face, then pieces it back together magically and says "Nanchatte" (just kidding) while putting it back in.That would quite literally be what Clannad After Story does to you in a nut shell. Of course there's a lot more to it than that but I wanted to warn you before hand because, quite frankly, I had to wait a few days before I wrote this... See full review

Dance in the Vampire Bund

Sep 3, 2011

Story: Thankfully the story had substance to it but the ultimate issue here is that it's based on a manga that's still ongoing so has very little closure. Whether or not they plan on more seasons I don't know and even so that probably wouldn't change my opinion of this show much though I would admittedly watch them should they become available. The main problem I had with the show as it's inconsistency, it had a few conflicting problems with their plot developments which I think could have been avoided had they just planned for it better. I think this had a lot more potential and seems to have a lot more... See full review

This review was pulled off the forums from a club I used to run, that is the reason for the different format.Overall 3.5 Mecha, loli, annoying characters, bad music, overly used plot... I got the bare minimum of entertainment out of it, I can say I've seen (meaning I finished the series) worse animes no doubt about it. So this was enjoyable to the point that it wasn't something as bad as say my arch nemesis of Reality TV shows. Story/Plot 3 As I said before, this was pretty much your typical duo fighting absolute evil just with a slight twist... or not as far as I know I haven't found one with a... See full review

Story:I didn't really expect to enjoy this show as much as I did, and while there were a few things about it wasn't overly impressed with the story was entertaining, compelling and satisfying. It was also quite unique and nearly believable in it's realistic portrayal of possible technology bridging the spiritual and real worlds accidentally. The fact that we aren't too far away from the technology represented in those glasses adds a healthy dose of reality to the show's theme.Animation:At first I wasn't sure if I really liked the characters designs too much, but soon it grew on me and I ended up loving them... Divergence Eve

Nov 18, 2009

This review was pulled off the forums from an old club I used to run, the format is different for that reason but still applies here.Overall Score: 6.5 What can you say about this to start off that doesn't touch on the overly obvious? The A-P tag "Boobs in Space" is more than obviously well earned. The gravity defying, Jell-O consistency, uniformly sized, and rather large boobs of every female character other than the token loli (android) made for a challenge to see past. Once I made the effort to look past it's visual "defects" I noticed that this show was a lot more than just a... See full review

Durarara!!

Nov 11, 2010

Story: This was actually a pretty good watch, my one real complaint would be the ending, it left just a few too many loose ends in my opinion. Well maybe only one major one and a few minor but the major one was the problem, and no I will not go into details because it would be a spoiler. Animation: Great artwork, nice character designs, no rainbow hair colors, realistic hair styles, decent city design, realistic vehicles... there wasn't anything bad about it for the most part. I guess it's main issues is that it didn't wow me or I would have put it at a perfect 10. After shows like Clannad and it'd ilk... See full review

Story:The story itself wasn't so bad, all around it had a good message, it progressed well and I enjoyed watching it. I wasn't overly impressed but it wasn't a complete botch job either.Animation:There really wasn't much to the anime that wowed me, it was obvious CGI cell shading style character designs but it was well detailed in it's vehicle and city designs. Still, for current tech it was sub-par.Sound:Sounds were pretty easy to ignore, nothing really stood out and yet to me that's a good thing. 7 is a pretty standard score for me to give this category unless something in particular got my attention in... Ghost in the Shell 2.0

May 26, 2010

I was a little disappointed though unsurprised that this really was just a remake of the original GitS movie, really some of it was a pointless CGI update, the original movie was outstanding as it was so the need for the remake is lost on me.Story:As anyone may already know due to it's popularity and longevity, the story and world is spectacular. It's engaging, dynamic, and keeps you wanting more when it's over. Whomever the writer(s) was/were they deserved awards for it.Animation:Again, the anime was of course top notch, there wasn't much you could argue about this title being bad considering it was years... Golden Time

Dec 6, 2016

Scary woman meets laid back amnesiac; trials, tribulations and troubles ensue. Story: I wasn't expecting this to be very good in all honesty. The synopsis sounded out right dumb. But when I watched this for the first time, and yes there has now been a second time which is why I decided to write this review, I was more than a little surprised at what I got. The story is slow to start and even a little confusing but as it gets rolling you realize you're in for a little ride. This anime can only be sumed up in 1 word... eh?I found myself saying that repeatedly throughout this series from the very begining, literally from the first 2 minutes in I said it for the first time.Story:There was potential here, sadly poorly managed plot timing and shotty story telling really ruined it completely. If the show wasn't a overall failure I might have tried to finish it.Anamation:The running theme of the show was inconsistancy, the artwork ranged from very well done to nearly early 90's quality, aka very poor. Hanasakeru Seishounen

In any great anime there are a few intangible qualities you just might miss when you've got less experience with it. In many ways this can be a blessing because you come across a title like this one that on the surface is actually pretty good if you're still fresh into anime in general. Unfortunately the flip side is also true being that you begin to notice the little things that can unravel a perfectly good anime into one that just irks you too often. This title, for me, is such an example of what happens when you become so familiar with something that you notice all the little flaws turning a gem into a... See full review

History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi

Nov 8, 2010

HSDK has the dubious distinction of being my #1 anime of all time. It's the only anime series I've watched more than 10 times now and continue to do so as time goes on. It never fails to bring a smile to my eyes, yes eyes, a task infinitely harder to do than just making me smile with my mouth alone. It's an anime who's sum does not equal it's parts since the only thing I rated at a perfect ten here was it's characters. Story: Truth be told there's not a huge amount of story here. Kimi ni Todoke - From Me To You

I was hopeful and optomistic that an old favorite aged well over the nearly 10 years since I saw it the first time. Sadly this one managed to irk me on several points. For the record this is a review of both seasons and not just the first. Story: If I had to describe the main feeling I felt watching this show it would be frustration. Misunderstandings on parade, he misunderstands her, she to him, they to them... it's kind of a never ending layered onion of misunderstandings. A show that would probably appeal to most ultimately served to piss me off at every turn. Story: On the surface I can say that the story and plot here are actually quite good, I had a little trouble at the start following what was going on due to just how much information they bombard you with but in the end it wasn't difficult. They had a few points where they go off on a tangent which seemingly has absolutely nothing to do with the main story but that's not exactly a new thing for anime in general, still it felt extremely out of place here. The ending was sweet but too short and a little anti-climactic. Story/Plot: 5 Pretty typical story and plot, nothing I hadn't seen before. Nothing that I didn't expect or stood out in my mind. My review for Sword Art Online v2.0 Lite.... >.> *coughs* Ok so the timing and resemblance to SAO is going to make it compared to that anime forever. Which is frankly a shame, as the two shows are completely different in flavor.

Story:

So the first few minutes in or even if you read a synopsis somewhere, you get the idea that the premiss behind the show isn't any different from another recent and very popular show. There are subtle differences to start but it's undeniably the same, still, as things progress you will quickly see more and more differences in how the story unfolds and where... See full review

Mardock Scramble: The First Compression

Sep 28, 2013

I went into this movie without a clue about it except it's future setting and I must say the first 5 minutes of the movie really set the tone for the whole thing. Very blunt and graphic progression through out. Don't let my "grim" account of it in no way shade my enjoyment of this title. I decided not to do a full on review yet simply because I haven't seen the 3rd (and what I assume to be the final) movie in this series. And a such, to me, the story and experience is yet incomplete.
