Binbougami ga!

Jan 1, 2016

(Note: This is a late entry in the holiday "Secret Santa" rec exchange.  I'm sticking with my usual "pros & cons" style of reviewing, but wanted to say that overall, I enjoyed this series a lot.  Thanks for the recommendation!) This series is worth watching because... it's a self-described "gag" comedy that delivers on that promise with lots of laughs, but also mixes in a nice dollop of heartfelt "feels" to balance out the wackiness. The hallmark of a good "gag" comedy in anime tends to be a frenetic, over-the-top, laugh-a-minute sort of... See full review

From the New World

Dec 24, 2013

Initial Note:  This was watched for the 2013 Secret Santa exchange, so a quick thank you to my Santa for giving me a reason to check this out sooner than I would have on my own.  Good call! You will probably enjoy this series... if you enjoy smart science fiction with an emphasis on multi-layered, thought-provoking worldbuilding, or stories that reward a viewer's patience with a slow-burn storyline that builds to a strong, satisfying conclusion.  The series is set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia.  A thousand years after humanity starts to develop powerful psychic abilities that make... 009-1

Jun 11, 2012

You may enjoy this series because of... its refreshingly "retro" style and and refreshingly "grown-up" sensibilities. On the "style" side of things, the series is modeled along the lines of a Cold War-era spy thriller, and the anime does a good job evoking that tone with sleek and mod-ish character designs, worldbuilding that strongly captures the paranoia-rife eastern/western-bloc mentality of that period, and an array of gadgets and weapons straight out of a James Bond fantasy.  Overall, the tone and style of the series is spot on for what they were shooting... GANTZ

Apr 26, 2011

You may enjoy Gantz because:  It's undeniably edgy and extreme.  Without a doubt, the main appeal of Gantz is the shock-value element (or "envelope-pushing", I suppose, depending on your POV).  Loads of ultra-violence, copious nudity and sexual scenarios.  Each death-scene more cringe-inducing and brutally imaginative than the next.  This is a series that was clearly designed to go beyond the usual boundaries of "good taste" into gross-out, over-the-top territory, and it lives up to that goal very well. Beyond the shock-value, the central mystery of Gantz is... See full review

Alien Nine

Feb 14, 2011

You may enjoy this series because:  It's a rather charming take on the mindf@#k genre.  Being only a four-episode OVA, the mindf@#ckery here isn't quite as intense and grim as something like Lain, but the combination of adorable character-designs and cheerful color palette with a disturbing, squirmy, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" sort of vibe definitely makes this an unsettling and memorable work. Our heroine is Yuri, a sixth-grade girl who has been voted as her class's representative in the school's "Alien Party" - a group of three girls given the job of capturing the... See full review

Starship Operators

Feb 14, 2011

You may enjoy this series because: It's a relatively competent "young-people-in-charge-of-a-starship" series, so if space adventures and combat appeal to you, it's probably a good bet.  The story follows a group of cadets aboard the starship Amaterasu as they choose to use the ship to fight back when their home-planet is taken over by a powerful wannabe-empire.  As the situation escalates from the empire seeing them as a meer annoyance to being a major thorn in its side, they are faced with a variety of increasingly difficult combat situations.  The handling of the combat scenarios... Flag

Feb 9, 2011

You may enjoy Flag because:   It's different.  There is always something interesting about watching an anime that makes an effort to step outside the box, even in cases where it's not 100% successful at what it's trying to do, and Flag is definitely worth checking out on that basis.  Firstly, it's a title grounded in a real-world feel, which is uncommon enough in anime to be worthy of note for that alone.  Everything from the character designs to the color palette to the presentation of the military heirarchy is very naturalistic and modern-day.  Even the obligatory mechs are...
