Fushigi Yugi: Genbu Kaiden

Jun 21, 2014

Story Best to start at the beginning with the contextual background! Fushigi Yûgi takes us through the adventures of Miaka and Yui, as they are trapped in a cursed book and spurred forth, pitted against each other by chance, to fulfil an ancient prophecy in a literary land resembling ancient China. This story takes us to the final events surrounding Miaka and Yui's heartbreaking battle, as the Priestesses of each region, to summon the ancient dieties known as Suzaku and Seiryuu. In this, we are made aware that Miaka and Yui are not the first priestesses ever to appear, and we are given some details... See full review

Hana-Kimi: For You in Full Blossom

Apr 27, 2013

Story
This shoujo manga from Hisaya Nakajo details the gender-bending journey of Mizuki Ashiya, who, to follow her idol - famous high jumper Izumi Sano - chooses to cut off her hair and enrol into the all-boys school Osaka High. I had my reservations as to how strongly the premise of 'just because she wanted to be near him' would hold up under the pressure of changing an entire identity and maintaining a façade to successfully fool a an entire school for THREE WHOLE YEARS. Firstly, would this maintaining a convincing image be sustainable without pushing the boundaries of believability? And... See full review

Fushigi Yugi

Apr 27, 2013

Story
This is an 18-volume shoujo manga series from the mid-90s by Yuu Watase, which has since been adapted into a 52-ep. anime series. Having read the manga first - and started watching the anime while reading vol. 15 -, my main drive for wanting to watch the anime was firstly, and mainly, because I was enjoying the manga so much that I was spurred to watch the anime version. I had a real hankering to see how the characters moved when brought to life, which is a very positive thing that indicates just how invested I was in the characters and their individuality. It's a freshly-spun... See full review

Absolute Boyfriend

Dec 22, 2012

Story - 7.5 The story is solid enough, with the teenage protagonist enacting the typical teenage girl with burgeoning hormones and about as little clue as to what to do with them as they have about the consequences of their actions upon others. Lucky that the 15-year-old, astoundingly virginal Riiko accidentally orders a doll to practice her feelings on and to bumble around the cluttered wasteland that is 'emotional firsts'... However, when she discovers that her new toy is designed for something far beyond her expectations, Riiko goes about her life as best she can, with the ever-present true nature of... See full review

100% Perfect Girl

Dec 15, 2012

Aside from being the first manga I ever opened, it's also the absolute standout.

Firstly, the art is positively gorgeous. Wann obviously places a lot of heart into the detail and complexity of the characters and surroundings. This ensures that regions are distinct and the setting is strongly woven to hold the impending action. It all beautifully underlines the delicately torturous emotions that feature as the driving undercurrent to the story. If anyone has even felt a fraction of the trials of complex relationships and the journeys they can take, - granted, we're not all whisked away by royalty... See full review
