Thanks for commenting on my Nisemonogatari review. ^_^
I know you applied for reviewership awhile ago and I've not forgotten, just been very, very busy.
Sadly, we really hope our applicants have a good command of grammar and spelling. Each review that goes live on the site goes through heavy edits and the less time we have to spend on mechanics means we can spend more time fine-tuning the review's analysis, flow, and content.
If you are still interested, I would work on two reviews with an eye to making an application out of them. Read other reviews on the site, write and polish your offerings and then apply again. Even though this is the internet, we really want what we publish here to at least appear sophisitcated (okay, my Itsudatte! My Santa review is just a couple hundred words of hate, but still...).
Thanks, however, for expressing interest. And don't be discouraged. :)
Hi Naga,
No definite list of 'good' Gundam should ever be offered without some qualifications and disclaimers. So permit me to waffle a little before answering your question. There is disagreement about the Gundams and which you genuinely see as the best depends upon your taste. For example, history has agreed that Zeta is potentially the best Gundam ever. I didn't enjoy it. Granted, it is far more nuanced a show than, say, the popcorn sandwich of Gundam SEED, but I only have fond memories of SEED's exciting battles and hammy dilemmas whereas Zeta's inane, puerile characters made it almost impossible for me to follow.
I also offer any such list with the express understanding that I don't actually hold the Gundam franchise qualitatively in that high a regard. I respect it enormously for its influence but not for its rape-milking of its only prize cow. One or two shows reach the great heights of 7.5/10 but the franchise as a whole festers at a middling 6/10. You've seen one Gundam and, thematically speaking, you've seen them all. Only a rare series will actually add a refreshing twist on the old folktale of 'war being bad' and most don't even manage that. Take the new Gundam Unicorn, for instance. Despite the promise of having the best character EVER, Char (or some clone similar enough to make it exciting), and also returning to the UC universe, it trudges along with obtuse dialogue and crappy action (yes, I consider things smashing into each other in space crappy action, no matter how glossy the animation).
Finally, keep in mind that I haven't seen all Gundam shows, just a fair few - to ask someone with a genuinely universal perspective, you could ask Chii or Funkgun, who are both very nice people and ever so helpful. With that done, here is my short list of the ones I found most enjoyable:
Gundam 0079 (the original series I love, but you might want to watch the movie trilogy version instead, which has better animation and condenses the plot in a more sophisticated way)
Char's Counterattack (to see this, though, you need to have watched Zeta I)
Gundam SEED
AVOID: Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED II, Zeta II
Hope that's a helpful place to start.
He wasn't mad. I dunno, I just felt it was necesary. S'all good. We're friendies now and we can argue and insult each other on our walls<3

Well you see I generally feel really good about a decent anime after I watch it so i end up stamping it at 4.5 or 4 stars but then i lookat it and think "I also rated this anime this, but that anime was way better" so i drop it down a couple points. After that i think again "wait a second now its the same as that one, however this one is better than that" so I put it in the middle, all of that and maybe a misclick or two and you have an explanation.
On another note, you seem to have a thing for characters with strange motives and sadistic tendencies, whatever floats your boat I guess.
