Favorite Anime

My favorite anime, in the order of how much affection I have for it. Not necessarily the "best" that I've seen--it's not all that objective and all based on fangirly feelings.
1 Princess Tutu
Princess Tutu

Fantastic characters, a twisty-turny storyline about fairytales, emotions, and fate, and wonderful use of ballet and classical music. This is my anime, it was made for me.

2 Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

I love magical girls. I love angst. I like stories about LGBTQ characters. It's pretty great and has a great message about hope at the end (even if it was messed with a little in the movies, which I still like).

3 Baccano!

I have a thing for the Jazz Age in America, and this has a HUGE ensemble cast of entertaining characters. Also a fantastic dub.

4 Paranoia Agent
Paranoia Agent

Addresses a lot of heavy subjects and issues in Japanese society (and the world) with a brilliant touch. Satoshi Kon died way too soon.

5 Neon Genesis Evangelion
Neon Genesis Evangelion

I just love characters that struggle with mental health issues, okay? And the "mechs" are badass. Classic for a reason. If kinda messy.

6 Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid

Takes FMP in a new direction, fleshing out the relationship between the mains and willing to dive deep into the war setting.

7 Yuri!!! on Ice
Yuri!!! on Ice

A daring gay love story wrapped up in a fascinating sports anime featuring my hands-down favorite sport.

8 Welcome to the NHK!
Welcome to the NHK!

Like an indie movie in an anime series. Really grapples with a mental health crisis in Japan.

9 Star Driver
Star Driver

Fantastic characters, amazing fights, colorful FUN.

10 Yurikuma Arashi
Yurikuma Arashi

I have a weakness for gay couples I think. Bonkers and entertaining but fairly easy to understand.

11 Pretear

My biggest guilty pleasure. Pretty guys, magical girls, angst galore. Mediocre probably but I don't care I love it.

12 Tiger & Bunny
Tiger & Bunny

Superheroes by way of anime. Gotta love it.

13 Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Laputa: Castle in the Sky

My favorite ghibli movie, like an old-school adventure coming-of-age novel.

14 Digimon Season 1: Digital Monsters
Digimon Season 1: Digital Monsters

Part of what made me an anime nerd, a surprisingly solid kids show.

15 Shiki

True horror. Nobody turns out well in this show. It gives me some pretty strong emotions every time I watch it and nearly broke me the first time I finished it.

16 Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun

I love character-driven-comedies with some parody in them, this is one of the best.

17 Samurai Flamenco
Samurai Flamenco

Bonkers send up and celebration of sentai shows with a solid cast of characters. Tons of twist and turns in this one that you never see coming. Don't spoil yourself just watch it.
