Story: 8/10

As far as the stopry goes, Nurarihyon no Mago Sennen Makyou is a great continuation of the first season of Nurarihyon no Mago. The way the story unfolds is epic in nature, especially when you consider that the Nura clan has a 400 year old history with the enemy Hagormo Mitsune and that Hagoromo Mitsune has been attempting to birth her child for about 1000 years. (I wouldn't e surprised if Hiroshi SHIIBASHI and Studio Deen decided to get together and create a prequel to the whole Nurarihyon series. I gave the story an 8 because of the crappy recap episodes (they took away from the effectiveness of the series), the continuity of the episodes being off (sometimes they would jump into a fight without having shown how the fight got started as if things had happened between the episodes...onyl happened two or three times...but it is annoying and it would have taken all of 2 hours to add the necessary content to the reel), and the endless need for Rikuo Nura to power up in a short amount of time in such a relatively small series.

Animation: 10/10

The animation quality is fabulous (at least to me). I love it when an artist puts effort into creating so many different visuals for mood, special effect, and in character design without using the same scenes over and over again in different settings (and honestly, I've seen that in a lot of animes). I gave the animation a solid 10 because I could see nothing wrong with how the anime was visually potrayed.

Sound: 9/10

The sound (as usual for me) was natural enough to the characters that I found nothing wrong with it. I liked the opening cedits music as well as the ending credits music and the scores during the anime were well timed and packed just enough "punch" to help keep the different moods from overpowering each other as the anime cut from one scene to another in each episode.I gave the sound a 9 because I found some of the characters voices to be annoyingly high-pitched and the incessant screaming during the "silly" parts of each episode were grating on my ears.

Characters: 9/10

The characters themselves were (as I said before) varied greatly in form and appearance. Because the vast majority of the characters are yokai/ayakashi from the Japanse culture, their appearances can range infinitely. Anything goes, whether we're talking about the Natto demon or the third heir to the Nura clan: The Lord of Pandemonium - Rikuo Nura (1/4th demon and 3/4ths human), the character designs are fabulous and entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the design for Awashima's character that is a man during the day and a super-hotty woman at night. (I am by no means bi-curious, but still...) The characters various voice actors were marvelous. They were all capable of setting the mood or lightening it with just enough pep to "make a funny" in a dire situation. I gave the characters a 9 because I felt that they didn't explore any of the characters well enough. Most of the characters were givena  super-brief spoken history in which they just conveniently told us why they were important or for what reasno they were fighting on which side. However, with the Toono Village Yokai, the best explanation as to why they don't pledge their allegiances to anyone is simly that they have all fought for weak leaders at some point or another, so they became strong in order to defen themselves. (So why in the hell would they bother getting involved with this war in the first place?...kind of a stupid thing if youi ask me. They should have explored the issue a little better....and that goes for almost all of the "explanations" for why certain people do certain things in this anime).

Overall: 9/10

Overall I gave this anime a 9 because it is by no means perfect, but it's hella awesome in my opinion.

8/10 story
10/10 animation
9/10 sound
9/10 characters
9/10 overall

HEY. Don't you dare blaspheme against Bleach. Even if they DO have a ton of filler episodes and Ichigo Kurosaki always gets beat down before he powers up.

I could care less how many words are in a review- if you had one. You aren’t' a reviewer. You, sir, are a critic. You whine and complain about who made the anime because you don't like their style, you talk down about artists work that you couldn't recreate properly if you traced it, and you down-right make fun of everything that you don't like. I never said you were a reviewer, I said you weren't one. I said there's a difference between reviewing and criticizing.

I never implied that all anime have the same story. I said that no anime has a unique story anymore. You really like attempting to twist my words.

Obviously it isn't true that everyone disagrees with me. I don't even need proof of that load of a statement.

"And even if that is the definition of epic..."

Even if? USE A DICTIONARY for crying out loud. Of course it's the definition of epic.

"...where exactly is the poetic part in a mediocre shounen?"

I don't believe I found it mediocre. I believe I said it was epic. I mentioned before that the story itself spans a thousand years. If a thousand years isn't an epic, then Batman wore red and blue tights. WHY? BECAUSE HE'S BATMAN!

I wouldn't call Katanagatari epic at all. I would called it an awesome stylized action- adventure anime. As far as Hyouge Mono goes, I haven't seen it yet, but it's on my W2W list, so thanks for that, I guess.

I am certain that I have shown that I DO know the meaning of epic and whilst I AM using it correctly, you, most certainly, are not. On this note, I am finished. Any of my words which you wish to twist or whatever, go right ahead. I won't pay any attention to your comments henceforth. I have more important things to do, like watching The Knight in the Area or re-runs of Enterprise. OH NO! The forbidden Live Action SciFi jutsu! Hahaha!

Seriously. I'm done with your foolish replies and  criticisms of my personal tastes and opinions.

ABOVE IN REPLY TO RORICONFAN's statements copied below:

"You can enjoy a show even if it's generic and predictable. Being a Bleachtard is more than enough proof of that.

You imply I don't explain my claims in a 10.000 word review? Check again. I am a reviewer and you admit it but otherwise contradict it.

You imply all anime have the same story. Total fail of an opinion to the point everybody is going to disagree with you.

And even if that is the definition of epic, where exactly is the poetic part in a mediocre shounen? If you were talking about a show like Katanagatari or Hyouge Mono, I would accept it for using complicating and long monologues. But a shounen with its dried up "fight, train, fight" pattern is off. You again don't know the meaning of the word."

“And you don't "feel" it was generic and predictable? That was my comment.”

No, I don’t. I ENJOYED the show, the characters, and the story itself.

“Nothing that is made for the masses is wonderful.”

That’s some twisted logic, in that you are twisting my words. When I said that you seem to "look down on people that have put their essence into creating wonderful pieces of entertainment for the masses" I was talking about all makers of anime as a whole. I was comparing you to a critic- not a reviewer.  There’s a massive difference between the two. Just in case you don’t know the difference, let me explain. A critic, by definition can say anything they want to about their subject matter and it doesn’t have to be backed by any kind of logical explanation. A reviewer, on the other hand, MUST use logical explanations to back up their comments.

“Unless you can enjoy any shit they offer on your plate then yes, I have a few don'ts when watching a show.”

And that is YOUR opinion that you should be posting on YOUR review. We are here to review anime, search for anime we might like, recommend anime that we like based on similarities, and ultimately to give props to the anime that we like. Oh, and I believe it says on my profile: “I love almost ALL anime.”

“Too bad because people are free to comment on them.”

I am painfully aware of this fact. You make the assholes out there proud.

"I am not the one who uses words incorrectly and misinforms the rest of the readers…So when I said MEH is literally meant USE THE WORDS CORRECTLY AND STOP ELEVATING CRAP!“

IT'S MY OPINION! I feel that the story is EPIC because it spans ONE THOUSAND years. No, they don't go into a lot of detail on those thousand years. Yes, the show has a similar story-line to several other anime. HEY, GUESS WHAT? SO DO ALL ANIME. Idiot. Just to show you that I am not the one misusing words here, I copied the definition of epic. See for yourself: "noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style."

“…you say you don't like me busting your bubble of tasteless evaluation?” Tasteless evaluation? Here, again, I shall remind you that “taste” is a matter of opinion. Mine, yours, and everyone else’s individual preferences. I like an anime you don’t like. SO MAKE YOUR OWN REVIEW. I’ll come over to your review of this anime and I’ll “Meh” you right back.

“You are the death of quality anime…while real masterpieces are extinct because casuals like you prefer shit!"

Well, I am so sorry that 99% of people interested in anime around the world DON’T AGREE with YOU. I am sorry that the makers of anime don’t agree with you. I guess you might say that we see it differently. Perhaps we think that if you have YOUR way, it will be the death of quality anime. Oh by the way…extinct isn’t a word you should use here…I guess you have all your words mixed up. Let me school you once more. “Extinct: 1. no longer in existence; that has ended or died out. 2. no longer in use; obsolete.” As I recall, your “epic” Tatmi Galaxy was made just under 2 years ago. 2 years doesn’t exactly sound very “extinct” to me, let alone the fact that people still watch anime from as far back as 1928 (or further)…such as Momotaro the Undefeated or Mighty Taro’s Reckless Training.

No longer in existence? No.      No longer in use? No.       Obsolete? No.

You are wrong on all counts.

“And all that because you didn’t like my MEH!”

Of course I didn’t like your “Meh” comment. How about giving a decent, intelligent, and courteous response? Ever seen Bambi? “If you don’t have anything nice to say,” then shut the f*** up!

@RingoStar:

Thanks for your comment. Thank you for being courteous. I respect your opinion, but all the same, I gave it a 9 for ALL of the reasons listed above. In my "Overall" I really just take the average of the rest of the ratings. 8+10+9+9 = 36. 36/4 = 9. Simple as that. I figure that re-stating everything in the other sections as my overall would be a little time consuming and boring. I was never much for writing the Thesis or Conclusion in any of my college papers...ha! I guess that shows pretty well in my reiews.

RingoStarr1991 Apr 30, 2012

While I have not watched its first season, I have seen the first couple episodes of this anime and have to say I believe you are being quite generous with the scores...I would at best give it a 5/10 because it is hardly keeping me interested and the characters are meh at best. I think your opinions blead through on this review a little too much because if I were to say "Overall I gave this anime a 9 because it is by no means perfect, but it's hella awesome in my opinion" then it is not even close to being worth a 9/10.

ThatAnimeSnob Apr 30, 2012

"I rate my anime based on how I feel about the story the characters, and the audio/visual quality."

And you don't "feel" it was generic and predictable? That was my comment.

"look down on people that have put their essence into creating wonderful pieces of entertainment for the masses"

Nothing that is made for the masses is wonderful. True works of brilliance are personal declarations of mind and spirit and not mass consumption fast food.

"how an anime SHOULD be made"

Unless you can enjoy any shit they offer on your plate then yes, I have a few don'ts when watching a show.

"I don't appreciate your criticism of the anime on MY review page"

Too bad because people are free to comment on them.

"nor do I appreciate your "Meh" to my review."

Listen here champ, I am not the one who uses words incorrectly and misinforms the rest of the readers. "The way the story unfolds is epic in nature." You have no idea what epic is. Epic is something akin to the complexity of Odyssey, Rege Veda, Suikoden, or Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is not a simplistic / mediocre / predictable shounen that will be forgotten two months after you completed it. So when I said MEH is literally meant USE THE WORDS CORRECTLY AND STOP ELEVATING CRAP! This show is NOTHING and you give it a 9??? What does that mean other than it's close to perfect when it is barely mediocre? 9 is something you give to shows of the level of Legend of Galactic Heroes or Tatami Galaxy and not to mediocrities.

So I am giving you some subtle feedback to think your mistakes and you say you don't like me busting your bubble of tasteless evaluation? And yes dammit I am pressing this issue because I got fed up with all of you who eat shit and give them a 9 and then ask for more. You are the death of quality anime and you don't even admit it! Because of you now they make shit like moe and ecchi while real masterpieces are extinct because casuals like you prefer shit!

And all that because you didn’t like my MEH! There, have fun with you mediocrities.
