(Last update Feb-7-2012)
So i am currently near the latest Naruto Shippuden episodes. I would like to mention a few things that kept bugging me through the whole Naruto + Naruto Shippuden series:
So i was working in my class searching for good ways to write an English essay. I found an article which mentioned habits we have to avoid while writing an effective essay, and i found a word i didn't know the meaning of and looked up what it was in the dictionary and here is what the dictionary told me:
Filler [Fil-er]: Phrases and sentences that are use..Na..used to cov...Naru...cover plot line in a... shor..uto ..............................Nar...uto! NARUTO
I don't even need to elaborate on the hell those fillers made me (and everyone else who watched these series) go through. What any other anime could cover in 25 episodes, Naruto covers in 50 because of all the useless fillers. Do you have any idea how many battles could have turned into something else completely if the fighting character did not stop and EXPLAIN to his or her enemy how he/she was attacking for the last 20 minutes? Instead of babbling about how much "Chakra" it took, the whole fight could have ended in a single blow and we would have to be attending the funerals of characters like Shikamru, Neji etc. (which might not stand on good grounds with many people watching Naruto).
The Filler type i hate most is the "stare down". For around 10 minutes characters look at each others faces while the dust is blowing or waves crashing (if Naruto is involved then you will hear a lot of grunting and teeth clenching too).
2. Technology Problem
Computers, wireless headsets, advance medical equipment all exist within Naruto...but somehow they have never heard of a "telephone" and use pigeon as a means of communication (did i mention they already have WIRELESS headsets during battles?). Also the fact that they have to run (well, jump from tree to tree) to reach their destination is strange because no one ever though of using horses, or inventing a motorbike or even normal manual cycles, yet they have medical equipment to put half of today's countries to shame. Furthermore, why use knives and "paper bombs" when guns are so much more effective? A Chakra covered bullet would reap so much more hell then, say, a fist or a puppet. In the most recent opening video (around episode 210 or so), they show our heroes standing on a modern ship, complete with metal hull and probably even a cappuccino machine if we look closer. Overall, just the extreme gap between the technology used and not used drove me nuts.
Now addressing some of the problems that people mentioned about Ninjas having bikes or other transport vehicles; that ninjas CANNOT have bikes...well...because they're freaking Ninjas, that's why. The problem with that is there are more than just ninjas living in the Naruto world. People with normal lives: bakers, merchants, engineers, builders etc. ALL have to walk from place to place. I understand ninjas can't be going into a stealth fight on a gas guzzling hummer or something but how come the "normal" people don't even have cycles?
New update: The series just showed the Naruto world to have hi-def video cameras like the ones used in news broadcast, yet people still travel on foot with no other means of transport. Yes it might be an alternate universe but honestly, how long does it take to invent the wheel?
Naruto 1st Season is the main culprit in this part. Almost half of the Naruto series involved "our heroes" going on and completing missions that had absolutely nothing to do with character development and/or plot. They were predictable from the start and always ended with Naruto eating a bowl of ramen.
Well i could only see one major contradiction, that of the character Lee. Lee is unable to control any chakra at all and thus is not able to use nin jutsu or gen jutsu even at an atomic level....but apparently he, like all the other ninjas, has mastered the art of walking on water. The problem is, this walking on water requires ninjas to "master chakra control" and since Lee has no chakra control at all, how is it that he is not only walking on water but jumping and running on it? A miracle in the making?
Tell me, if you had a childhood friend who hated your guts from the start, but you both eventually turned out to be good friends as time passed, what would you do if this friend decided that he/she actually DOES hate your guts and the "friendship" was nothing more than time-pass? And to top it all off, this friend now wants to kill you and blow your home up after betraying your and everyone elses trust.
If you're like me (or any other normal human), you would be sure to cover your shurikens in a coat of poison, take training lessons from Chuck Norris, and slam a kunai knife up so hard up that friend's arse that he would taste metal for a month.
Unfortunately, our hero, Naruto, has this problem (attraction?) that makes him incapable of even thinking about Sasuke without shedding tears or fainting. Same goes to Sakura, who is so deeply in love with this Sasuke that the producers devoted 2 bloody episodes showing how much she loves him (in other words, two episodes of fillers showing Sakura's fond memories of Sasuke). While all this time Sasuke is going around helping the die-hard enemies of Naruto and Sakura.
In other words, the power they show Naruto possesses, really diminishes when this powerful Jinjuriki cries at the mere mention of a "friend" who now wants to skin Naruto alive for absolutely nothing at all.
Yes, i had to give this point its very own title. Through the 400+ episodes, Sakura has done absolutly nothing but cry. I can understand her lack of no abilty whatsoever in the first (freakin) 100 episodes or so but after that, she becomes a "real ninja". However, even now all she does is cry and wish Saske would come back to her. I have not seen her land a single blow, a SINGLE BLOW in a real fight. Sure she becomes all sadistic when beating Naruto up but as soon as an enemy shows up, she crawls under the nearest rock and cries about Saske.
Overall Naruto and Shippuden took away from me hours of my life. I thoroughly enjoyed it but i can't stop hoping the coming episodes will be more story/character related and have less fillers. I don't want to spend my internet cap downloading 15 minutes of fillers and 5 minutes of actual story
