Lets see if I cannot fix this old blog post to something more... well.. readable.
In the month of November, near towards the end, the episodes for Kuroshitsuji (DUBBED) where posted on youtube. As everyone should know by now, I didn't take it too kindly back than, and still have difficulties with it, but thankfully I have finally rained in my short temper. After watching it for awhile there, and more so on some other sites, then comparing it with the original (SUB) version, I can say this to any UK or American - possibly to any fan who bothers to buy DUBs, to not waste your money.
'breaths' I honestly don't know where to begin with explaining this to any of you, so I will try my best.
When I went to watch it on youtube for the first time.. I was not so thrilled with knowing who the VAs where, and for good reasons (that will come to explain later). But I kept an open mind like I usually do with coming to a new anime and (gritted my teeth) and watched. I must say the first two episodes where cring factors for me to bare but thankfully settled to a shake tolerable by the third. First off, the first two episodes Sebastian's voice was that of an old mans' with some sort of nasal problem. Not at all fitting for him, and there seems to be some sort of change in lines from the bestly known 'yes my lord' to ' yes sir'. This discourage me because.. Well it wasn't like him. Well not like his character to use 'sir'. Pressing on, there was Ciel. Ciel's VA honestly pissed me off. He sounded like a grown woman with a snooty disposition. You could easily tell from the moment he spoke that his VA was not of the right age, nor gender to play him. His voice did not match his character for other than that snootiness (I imagine that all British people have it somewhere, whether they admit it or not).. but she over did the snootiness a tad. Ciel's voice I completely could not stop cringing at.. and then their was Undertaker.. he lost some of his character with the pirate facade he put on.. Urgh.. I wonder if the people where drunk when they did this.
I could go on all night about how bad the VAs where but I must remind you I don't have much time on the computer so I must rush. I will say there was an awful mickey mouse impersination from Finnian.
The accents where just plan out horrible. I swear the UK should sue for that.. Heck I even felt sorry to where I wanted to apologize to my friends in England. It was that bad. I will tell you this.. for those who believe the accents where good.. you obviously never heard a British person speak. Those where fake, bad.. Just wrong!! I cannot tell you how made I was with this.. and plus it made the characters sound a bit nasal. Not natural.
Lip-synicing problems. For a moment I thought this was may have been a site glitch but after some consideration (and changing of sites a couple of times) I figured it was not. If you pay attention rather closely you will notice that the lips don't fallow the voice right. I've noticed this threw out my exprience of watching the dub.. and mind you it added to the lack of enjoyment.
So many problems.. I do not wish to explain. I will say this.. if you were to have watched Kuroshitsuji in nothing but dubbing first, never the subs, you'd most likely rate it an Average. It was that boring. This coming from a person who has watched the series over 14 times in subs, and only watched it up to.. episode 8 may-be. I will tell you this. Like any person my interest is what keeps me to watch, but what I found in this dub version disappoints me greatly. It was dull.. lifeless. Empty.
Were you to compare it to the original and to this.. you'll notice how dull the characters seem to be. Almost robotic. It was like.. a vampire came and took away most of the life and replaced it with cold grey. When watching it in subs you see the characters really brought to life.. but the dub.. The dub just.. I don't know. It was like a mirror. Cold as the glass that shings over your reflection. Emotionless.. void. I'm sorry if I am not good at explaining this, nor do you understand but this is how it felt. Cold.
If you look to fanfiction.net's forums for Kuroshitsuji they explain more about how bad the dubbing really is. I'm tired of explain my exprience with the awful dubbing.
Now. How can you save your money from wasting it. Simply.
1.) You can always watch it on FUNimation's home site, Youtube, or any anime site that allows dubs videos.
2.) You can download it from any downloadable site. If you want the dub you can go to Justdub and download it there, or you can find a site where you can download the sub version.
3.) You can rent it on Netflix or Blockbuster. Note it is now up on the site so you can save it to your que.
4.)You don't bother wasting it or watching it at all. Either way is fine.
Why I am giving you this list? Basically I don't want other Kuroshitsuji fans having to suffer losing their money on something they may regret later. Nor do I want new commers having to go threw blind without knowing what they are getting.
Three things to keep in mind. One: The dvd/blu-ray/or limited editions will always be over priced. And what do you get, half the series with poor special features. Yay, reall enjoyable 'sarcastic'. Two: You'll get something you may regret. I remember this bad feeling of regret when I bought a CD from this band. I liked this one song and assumed the whole CD was good.. unfortunately I wasted 10 dollars on it and ended up with a crash computer and a CD I didn't want. Don't go in blind, try it out first before you buy. That should. Three: Stupidity. Falling for their tricks is a one way tick to waste your money.
Number three needs some explaining so this tid bit is for you guys. Now, I believe that some of you have notice how the manga scanlation team always says in their credit " Do not forget to buy the manga to help support Yana Toboso". Guys, let me ask you.. how is it supporting them. Sure they know we are buying but how do they know that we really like it. This is a common trick fans put themselves threw when it comes to purchasing almost anything really. I notice it but I don't think people notice it themselves. Guys. They are not getting support from us buying the products, they gain support threw the fanbase. Seeing our fan art, fan mail, fanfictions, and many other things they can support, not with the purchase. Think of that next time your buying.
Another thing is how fans just want one thing. Most fans buy the dvd so they can have the sub version and yet ignore the rest of the DVD/Blu-ray.. or whatever you buy. Its like wanting a CD for only one song. You can download.. hello.. 'knocks on your head' how hard is that. Another thing is just being fans... Now I have no qualms with this.. because really you love the series and you want it no matter what. I will say in time you'd probably will see the mistake, but nobody can blame anyone for being a fan. We can call you ignorant and stupid for it but we can't blame you. Its 50/50 there.
Another thing is that when you are purchasing this all the money is going to FUNimation.. It is not going to the original animators or author. Its going to those idiots that did the bad dubbing. Now I may sound silly, I usually do. It ticks me off to know that these VAs are going to get payed a fortune for doing a bad job. Sure tolerable as it is, it is still not very good. Who wants a James Bond sounding Sebastian, and a grown woman Ciel in their heads uh.. Sorry now I know I must be tired.. I'm starting to rant.
Well.. I think I made my point clearer this time.
