Yeah the mindless ecchi stuff has always been at the bottom of the barrel for me and I just don't have the time or interest in bothering with anything remotely close to the genre.

And you're welcome. Haibane Renmei, Kino no Tabi, Mushishi, etc. are the types of symbolic anime I can appreciate because they're actually good work and not pseudo-intellectual fluff. I don't consider symbolic works good merely on the premise that they're symbolic - they have to earn my respect by their own merits. Series like Lain come across to me as little more than pretentious garbage.

I'm not sure your literary background (mine is quite limited), but I'd point you to Albert Camus' The Stranger for a similar comparison. I had to read it way back in my highschool days and its only selling point seemed to be that it was a heavily symbolic existentialist work; the writing was poor, the story bland and fragmented, etc. It was drooled over in my class due to the symbolic content and I've never understood the draws of such things. Compare this with other symbolic works like Heart of Darkness and the disparity in quality between pieces is pretty clear. I hold the same standards for anime: if you want to be appreciated as a respectable symbolic work, do a good job and don't just slab symbolism in my face. Just as one wouldn't watch porn for a romance story, I don't watch pseudo-symbolic bunk for intellectual appreciation. =P
