Been watching american and british series mostly lately, Game of Thrones is always good, House just finished its 8th season and Fringe its 5th. The shadow line is a british crime drama that really blurs the line between good and bad. Seven one hour episodes with a single storyline through the whole thing. It's refreshingly subtle, what the characters aren't saying is often more important than what they are.
I'm also getting psychiatric help, they're trying to diagnose me right now which hopefully leads to real help.
Oh, and Diablo III! The game claims I've killed 53000 monsters so far. Good times.
How are your studies going anyway? You aiming for a certain profession?
Around Flying Daggers I as getting very tired of CGI in my fights, then Ong Bak was released outside Thailand and suddenly the coolest thing out there was no CGI and no wires. I just need for it to look like they know what they're doing and this is very rarely the case in anime. Old Jackie Chan, Tony Jah and recent Donnie Yen is pretty much martial arts porn. I crave!
Suspension of disbelief is a huge thing for me and Evangelion worked very hard to uphold the illusion I suppose. Will probably be the only mecha show I'll ever like.
That sounds hilarious, have you actually heard people calling things bad because it's not derivative? Rationalisation is a powerful force. .p
But looking outside your opinions is very hard, isn't it? Sometimes you just dislike something and there's shit all to do about it. And then someone points out all the positive aspects of it and you feel attacked. I always think about this quote;

Opinion is now often fact; irrefutable, immutable, unchallengeable and infallible. If you do not agree with someone's opinion, you are insane.
There's a few over there yeah like Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hero and Flying Daggers among others) and Michelle Yeoh but they're usually schooled in balette and not any sort of fighting hence the common complaint that martial arts look like dancing. (They still can make it look kind of cool but having mancrushes on Donnie Yen and Tony Jah older chinese martial arts movies are kind of silly). The exception is JeeJa Yanin who's a Taekwondo blackbelt and is really cool (in a sort of cute way, she's rather small).

Everyone loves Eternal Sunshine, it's a great movie no matter how you look at it. :3
I think I had my big anime craze when I was 14-15. We watched Nadesico, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk and Chobits. (And a bunch of others less interesting, most I've forgot) Never really gotten back to it since most of it is still made for teenagers.It's like with Final Fantasy, loads of my friends used to love those games but they just became less and less interesting. Square keeps making games for the person I was when I was 15 so I feel left out. Doesn't help that Nomuras new writer-pal can't write for shit.Still it's interesting this demographics-thing, what is it that made me love them then but just sigh at now? What made me see past that Evangelion is basicly a monster of the week-show?
These expectations I know of but always scoffed at. It happens rather often that my friends see a movie, play a game etc and praise it to the sky. I see it and think "It's alright" whereafter I have to defend my opinion, especially against the more rabid persons. "How can you not like this, it's awesome!" and so on. People talked about the amazing character development in the FMA anime. I never found it which actually angered some people a bit. We were teenagers but it's still funny.
This is a common debate point I reach, people seem to believe that if they like something it's actually good. People can love Elfen Lied all they want, it's still shit. I like Digi Charat, it's still crappy. After we had seen Låt Den Rätte Komma In a friend heard a couple of girls exclaim "That movie was shit!". That they didn't like it fine but it's well written, has great camera and scenework and good acting so it's by definition a good movie. A movie like Iron Man I'm not so sure about. I love it but beyond decent actors and high production values you just have to like it. And so on.I had a post about this on my blog but apparently I was a very bad mood when I wrote it so I won't link that...I'm not saying "People should be more like me", it's more like I'm tired of hearing what I like is shit and dumb and what other people like is amazing without any sort of argument as to why. Exaggeration in many cases but that some people can't seem to differ between opinion/taste and actual quality is frustrating.
This is getting long.
Quality has to be something you can grade though in a lot of cases it's hard like with music. Good musicianship and a disinterest in commercial potential sure, but that's just the kind of music I like. With movies on the other hand I mentioned a few criterias and the same thing goes for comics, manga etc. There are after all such things as good writing. But again we come back to people believing that if they like something it means the writing is good. Argh.
I suppose I'm bad at just liking stuff, looking at most things objectively seems to piss people off. .p
Honestly, best goddamn thing you can read is The Punisher when Garth Ennis does him. Ennis adds pitch black humour and characterisation so good you start to like Frank as a person despite him being the worst serial killer in any media, perhaps ever. One can see the likeness to Dexter but this is dirtier and more violent than Dexters writers would ever dare. Especially in the long run when he's given free reigns and turns it into the grittiest fucking thing I've ever read. Check out The Slavers if you're able to and see if you like it. If you do you'll have a world of fun to look forward to. (Like Preacher and The Boys, I always smile just thinking about these comics...)

I've had a few rough days where I among other things have been questioning my right to exist. I usually go in full rant mode when I am like that.
Anyway, I always enjoy reading your replies so you shouldn't have to face a unrelenting wall of text every time you log in.
