The House of Small Cubes

Jan 1, 2018

With an anime like this, it is difficult to write a review without spoiling the story. However, with an anime like this, it is more about the artful experience than the story. It is more about how the piece makes you feel. La Maison en Petits Cubes roughly translates to The House in Small Parts, and the anime presents a story told in small parts. An elderly man is living alone in a partially submerged house. We are given the impression that he is entirely isolated from other people. The man is about to eat while staring at a wall of photographs when he drops his pipe into the water. Putting on a diving... See full review

The Sensualist

Jan 1, 2018

This is difficult to review as well as rate. It has its appeal, but I found it quite comical and odd at times. The Sensualist is based on a famous Japanese novel that tells the story of Yonosuke’s promiscuous life from age seven to sixty. This film focuses on only one event of his life while summarizing events that led up to it. The story is that a tailor has betted that he will be able to sleep with a courtesan upon first meeting her. If he fails, he will be emasculated. Knowing the courtesan rarely sleeps with anyone on their first meeting, Yonosuke takes pity on the man and travels with him to meet... See full review

In Another World With My Smartphone

Nov 5, 2017

Wow, I haven't written a review in so long, but I was pretty amazed that there were multiple 10/10 reviews for this anime. The first episode was funny enough for me to continue to episode 2, but after that, I only continued because I hate to drop things. Apparently, the original light novel does actually have a plot, but the anime comes off as comedic, pointless nonsense. Story: The story opens with the protagonist Touya meeting God after God accidentally killed him. Not only are we pushed right into the situation instead of seeing him die, but God gives some vague explanation about why Touya can only... See full review

Tales of Zestiria: Dawn of the Shepherd

Apr 15, 2016

If you have not noticed the "based on a video game tag" this is based on the Tales of Zestiria game, particularly everything up until the game's opening credits. As with any adapted work, there are some different positives and negatives when it is compared to the original and when viewed as a stand-alone piece. So, after the story description there are two sections: as an adaption, and as a stand-alone piece. Story: This section follows Mikleo (a seraph), Sorey (a human who was raised by the seraph), and Alisha (a mysterious young woman who cannot see the seraphim). Sorey and Mikleo grew up as... Beyond the Boundary Movie: I'll Be Here - Future

Dec 17, 2015

This movie has the best directing I have ever seen in an anime! I have honestly never caught myself paying such close attention to directing while watching an anime before. Every scene, every camera (drawing?) angle was perfectly executed to increase your emotions. Every single expression Mirai or Akihito showed was so well defined and distinct. As you can tell, I loved this movie! Story: The story begins after the Kako-hen movie and shortly after the anime series. The premise is that Mirai has lost her memory of everything involving Akihito and her work as a Spirit Warrior. While she is naturally drawn... See full review

Beyond the Boundary Movie: I'll Be Here - Past

Dec 17, 2015

This is a decent movie, but I highly recommend watching it only after first watching the show. The movie is nothing but a recap of the most important scenes in the show, and while it does tell a linear story, it doesn’t make as much sense without having the background the show provides. Scenes are snipped so that you wouldn’t know where the characters are or how they got there if you hadn’t seen the anime. Also, characters pop out of nowhere without any explanation. More than an error, I think these factors indicate that the movie really is meant to be a quick recap for fans of the show... See full review

Aldnoah.Zero

Dec 16, 2015

My first impression of this anime was the amazing cover of ALiez by AmaLee. It quickly became one of my favorite songs ever. With such resonating lyrics, I had high expectations for this anime and its messages of peace. However, a quick glance at the reviews here made me put off watching it for a while since the reviewers were less than impressed. Luckily, I did find myself enjoying the anime more than they did. Story: It is... See full review

DRAMAtical Murder: Data_xx_Transitory

Jun 24, 2015

While I found the anime to be problematic to both players and non of the original visual novel is much more fitted for players. It does some interesting things that are unique for the OVA, however the story jumps around so quickly that anyone who hasn't played the game is likely to be majorly confused.  I am keeping my rating at an eight aside from the three tens, because of the fact that I think they could have made this clearer for viewers who haven't played the game. However, I will forever think that they did I much better job on this one epiosde than the entire main anime. For... See full review

Tokyo Ghoul

Jun 2, 2015

Sorry for the shortness of this review. I am writing this months after finishing it. Frankly the continuation of this anime and the manga has somewhat disappointed me, but I love this anime, particularly the directing. The contrasts between the ghouls and humans are clearly shown through the directing, especially during the episode where Kaneki fighting Amon (episode 8 I think).  Story My first impression of this story was of a meaningful representation of racism, and that Kaneki served as the middle ground showing that there is really no difference between the ghouls and humans. Well, later events... See full review

Hourou Musuko

Jun 2, 2015

Hourou Musuko is definitely a hidden gem that I wish I had discovered sooner. The story is heavy on gender identity and what it means to be comfortable as yourself. A majority of the characters are well-rounded with their own personal struggles. A few being that Nitori is a boy who has always wished that he were a girl, Takatsuki wishes that she was a boy, and Ariga wants to be cute like Nitori and suspects that he is gay. While much of the story revolves around gender, especially Nitori's, it is not the only concern, giving it more of a realistic feel and the message that gender is not everything. I... See full review

The Fruit of Grisaia Specials

Jun 1, 2015

I never go into watching specials expecting much. I was not expecting the pure ecchi-fest that were these specials--why I didn't, I have no clue considering the ecchiness of the series. But the series maintained a certain amount of decency, while this does not. Now I'm not opposed to ecchi, though I often find it takes away from the seriousness of a story (a reason why I'm glad the series stayed most decent, especially during Amane's backstory). However, I still think that pointless, stand-alone ecchi is just that: pointless. Maybe I care too much about story and substance, but I just don't see the point of... See full review

Brynhildr in the Darkness

May 20, 2015

Okay, so I've glanced at some of the reviews, and I'm really confused why this seems to get put down a lot while No Game No Life is highly applauded. In my eyes this is a lot better, but that is besides the point. One thing I've seen is this getting compared to Elfen Lied. I can understand this since it is by the same writer and has many similarities, but I think it is best to always look at a piece alone first before comparing it to something else, even when it comes to books turned into movies. So, I will compare this to Eflen Lied, but it in no way was the deciding factor for my ratings. Story The... See full review

Mass Effect: Paragon Lost

Mar 2, 2015

Mass Effect: Paragon Lost takes place during the events of Mass Effect 2 and serve as the backstory for James Vega (who does not appear in the games until 3). While it is possible to understand what is going on in Paragon Lost without a knowledge of the games, having this knowledge is beneficial since you won’t have to grasp onto every bit of dialogue. Story The story follows the information that James tell Commander Shepard during the third game. The biggest fault I found with the story was I had trouble figuring out when this was taking place. Perhaps I was just not paying as close attention as I... See full review

DRAMAtical Murder

Sep 22, 2014

This review will mostly focus on my mixed feelings about changes made from the game. I tried to watch this with a duel lens, half as someone who loves the game and as someone without any previous exposure. Many problems arise from both sides. On the one hand, I think that they were able to join the separate character stories together adequately, but at the same time it leaves game players disappointed and newcomers left confused.  Character Stories: The game includes different routes that have different plots and united piece together loose ends about the overarching situation. Each of the guys... See full review

Nana

Jul 16, 2014

This show is highly addictive. When I started I wasn't that attached to any of the characters. I picked out all their character flaws, yet at the same time both Nanas had this fun vibe. Nana K. is (as Nana O. later states) just like a puppy, and Nana O. was both cool and fun.  At its start, the series seems to only be about Nana K. growing up, but there was a lot more to it. Both Nanas develop greatly throughout the show, and many other characters learn lessons as well.  On a base level the show is about facing reality and your decisions. Every decision changes your future and affects everyone... See full review

H2O: Footprints in the Sand

Jul 15, 2014

The best thing about this series was the intrigue. The very first scene pulls you in telling about a man walking on the beach beside God. The story is interesting because it is both slice of life and supernatural at the same time.
I liked how the mystery lingered even after each new answer was given. For example, even after Otoha explained who she was, you were still intrigued by not knowing what The Promised One meant. It keeps you engaged through the slice of life moments.
There are some things left not completely answered, but I they can easily be overlooked by the mysterious atmosphere of the... See full review

Arjuna

Jul 8, 2014

For a personal rating I gave it 10. This is because on a spiritual level I really enjoyed it. However, in a full-out review I must note the flaws and lower my rating.    Rating the story in-itself is difficult. The message and theme of the anime is solid. It is constantly supporting itself in detail so that it cannot be overlooked. I know that some people dislike this, saying that things are being thrown at your face. But since I am an environmentalist, and I agree with pretty much everything the show says, I enjoyed the frankness of it. The plot itself is a bit shaky though. It jumps from one... See full review

Brothers Conflict

May 1, 2014

It was not as bad as I thought it would be based off the first episode. The title “Brothers Conflict” is a double entendre. You begin thinking that it means “Brother Conflict” in that the female protagonist Chii has the conflict of picking which brother to date, but surprisingly it actually works more as the brothers conflicting with each other. You think that the show will be all about romance (which obviously it is), but the main theme is actually family. Here is a list of my main grievances with the show:
Juli (the squirrel)

How many brothers there are... See full review

Diabolik Lovers

Mar 19, 2014

Everything about this anime is seductive, yet at the same time off-putting. If I had to describe this in one word it would be pretty. The art is beautiful and I could listen to the guys’ voices all day long. I also loved all the music. The fact that this was made from an otome game is quite apparent from the sudden reverse harem and total lack of Yui’s character development. Whereas many harem/reverse harem anime point toward at least one girl/guy being more important than the rest, this is just like an otome game giving all the guys equal appearances and equal relationship development (though... Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings

Dec 18, 2013

Yes, this movie is completely recap from the anime. No, I did not find anything truly new about the movie. However, the movie seemed fresh and overall more enjoyable than the anime. Now, this could partially be due to the fact that I was able to piece the story together better since it was a retelling. I for one loved the anime and enjoyed seeing the story yet again.    The story flowed better in this movie format. As another user mentioned in their blog, the story is fit more for a dramatic movie than clipped episodes. The overall feels was more eerie than the anime, which I also credit the... See full review

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Oct 5, 2013

To start off I was intrigued from the beginning of the series. At first I did not like any of the characters so I'm not sure why I was so intrigued but I just was. I rated the show 4 out of 5 right after the first episode. As the episodes continued I was filled with this same intrigue even as I felt nothing substantial was happening. I found myself periodically doing other things while listening to the English dub. Even though I still did not "love" most of the characters, what I cared about most were their interactions. However, what I think I enjoyed the most about this series was the overlaying... See full review

Free! Iwatobi Swim Club

Oct 1, 2013

Story: The story is the cliché. Some old time friends in high school want to create a club. They have some difficulties starting the club because they must find a new member. After finally gaining this new member they prepare for competitions. There is also the premise of the old friend who has turned angsty and works as a somewhat-antagonist. Of course there is the extra array of fanservice and splashes of shounen-ai inferences. The show is also fairly humorous. Besides the cliché plot, though there are some good features. I personally enjoyed the little comments that Haru would make about... See full review

Shiki

Jul 15, 2011

Overall, this is a beautiful work of art. The animation is beautiful to look at and every song fits perfectly and sounds great. The voice actors were also great. Even though the ending to this anime is not exactly fulfilling, the only thing that I would criticize is that there are so many characters that it is hard to keep tract of them all. The characterization is amazing, however. You love, for the most part, every character, even the vampires. If you want beautiful music and animation, a compelling story that keeps you hooked, likeable characters, and some gore, then this is the perfect anime for you. ... See full review

Kachou no Koi

Apr 16, 2011

This was a bad attempt at a good show that is still good because it is so bad. It is so bad that it is funny. This has one of the worst animation I have seen on anime. At first I thought it was entirely pictures until they finally started to move their mouths. There is not much of a story. The sound is okay but the highlight is when hallelujah. I hope that this anime was meant to be stupid and comical or else it is majorly sad. This is one of the funnist anime I have ever seen. This is a great laugh and I would suggest watching only for laughs without any higher hopes.

I did not like this movie at all. I have seen the show and I love it, but this movie was awfull. I could not connect with the characters at all and I didn't feel any emotion while watching this except annoyance. The music was good and it was the same music that is in the show. The voice actors did a good job as well. The story did not make a lot of sense. If I had not seen the show before hand I think that I would have been utterly lost. Shakugan no Shana Movie

Feb 12, 2010

Ok after watching the first season this movie really sucked in comparision. First off there was no reason for the girl that likes Yuji to be in it since she doesn't do anything. It was ok to have in it during the part at school but when they show her at her house it is pointless. It was kind of funny how the girl with the big back pack was on the TV all the time but that was also pointless. There was no development of Shana's personality at all. She had no reason to care for Yuji and when she got hurt I didn't really care that much. In the actual show I cared a lot. All in all this movie was sort of lame... See full review

Naruto Shippuden Movie 1

This movie was really good. This is one of my favorite anime movies ever. It kept the characters in character and made very good characterisation to the new characters. The story was very good. Everything made sense and was displayed very well. The animation was good and the fighting scenes were great. There were no boring parts. You are hooked from the very begining because of the great catcher at the start. It grabs your attention at the start and you can't wait to see how it will end. It also had a very good climax and close.

Shamanic Princess

Nov 8, 2009

This show had a really confusing storyline. I still do not know what Throne of Yord's ambisions were. There was only a little character development. There was not a lot of relationship displayed between people. There was more of a telling of the relations. I think this show was very confusing and could have been made better. It wasn't a horrible show, but I didn't really like it. It was also a little boring.
