  • Visual:            7 – clear cut but slightly sluggish at times
  • Music:             4 – unimpressionable
  • Characters:     7 – too shallow even for this short an anime
  • Story:              10 – excellent story, gives something to think about
  • Experience:     9 – very emotional, has deep meaning

I first saw Voices of a Distant Star in a movie theatre full of people. Most of them were crying by the end. Sadness, emptiness, waiting, love stretched out to the point of breaking. That’s what this short movie is about. Space travel, time lapse and evil aliens come to destroy humans? Not important. Giant mechas, families and growing up? Not important. A message travelling through space for years and years? Important.

There is nothing remarkable in the visual on musical side of this anime. Furthermore, the characters are barely outlined, which usually means utter failure. Nevertheless, the blast of emotion one gets from watching this piece in incredible and unforgettable for a very long time.

Suggestion for anyone: watch it (but only if and when you don’t mind wiping tears...)

10/10 story
