Aikatsu Stars!

Dec 29, 2016

Aikatsu Stars is a reboot of the Aikatsu anime franchise. It doesn't take place in the same "universe" as the other series, however it is still similar plot-wise. While I know this series isn't great, it's been a guilty pleasure of mine for years and I was looking forward to much needed upgrade. You can watch this as a new standalone series, unrelated to the previous seasons. Story The story follows new student Yume as she enters Four Star Academy, a school for idols. She entrs with her best friend Koharu and they hope to run into the super idols (S4, a four-member group) they admire. They... See full review

Bonobono (2016)

Dec 18, 2016

This show is pretty bad. I can't even figure out who the intended audience is. Story This show is a short form anime about a blue otter named Bonobono and his friends (a squirrel and raccoon). The episodes are about Bonobono's boring every day activities. From playing, to exploring, or just learning something new from the other animals. Except, that makes the show sound more interesting than it actually is. I've read that this is based on a 'gag' manga, but there isn't a single funny thing that happens in this show. The animals slowly walk around stumble through conversations at a snail's pace. Usually... See full review

Beyblade: Burst

Dec 18, 2016

Oh boy. After many years of not caring about the Beyblade franchise, I decided to try the newest one. I watched the original when I was young, and recently rewatched it again. There was a pretty big difference in what I remembered about the quality, haha. In this short review I might refer to the original series as that's what many people can related to. Story At the moment, I've only seen the first twenty episodes. So far, the story is a bit more simple than the original plot line (whic involved the mythical monsters trapped in the beyblades and some high stakes games later in the series). The... Aggressive Retsuko

Dec 18, 2016

Aggressive Retsuko is a very interesting and fun show. It's pretty simple, so there isn't much to say, but I'll try to write a somewhat helpful summary. No spoilers. Story This show is a comedic short form anime that is only one minute in length. It is about Retsuko, a red panda who works in accounting, and her frustrations with her job and co-workers. Other than the fact each character is an animal, the setting and scenarios are pretty realistic and relatable. Retsuko works very hard for her taxing job, but things don't always go her way. When she gets angry, she turns from a cute... See full review

Minarai Diva

Dec 6, 2016

Firstly, I'd like to admit I did not watch the entire show. I barely watched one and a half episodes, so my review is based solely on that experience. Animation/Sound The first thing I want to talk about is the sound and animation together, as this isn't a regular anime. This show is actually aired LIVE using one of those vocaloid CGI programs. While sections of the show are pre-recorded, many parts are actually filmed using the two voice actors as actors, who control their CGI counterparts. The beginning of the show actually shows the studio, staff, and actors preparing. This is actually... See full review

Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins

Apr 24, 2016

Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins is a promotional CGI film created to advertise the new "Star Fox Zero" for Nintendo WiiU. I will keep this review brief as there is not much content to talk about in this 15-minute video, and I don't want to give out any plot points.

If I did not know this was an ad, I would have no doubt thought I was watching a Star Fox anime! Ending (and slightly rushed pacing) aside, this was overall very well done! In a short amount of time it does exactly what it was designed to do: Introduce the setting, the characters, the plot, and grab the attention of the... See full review

A crow is white: fake!fake!

Jul 9, 2015

It's pretty hard to write a review of a music video like, but I enjoyed it so much, I'd like to try. A Crow is White is a Japanese pop band, and this is the music video for their song, A Crow is White. Sound Personally, I found the song, sung by 'A Crow is White', to be the weakest part of this video. The singer's voice is soft/generic and isn't very exciting. I'd love to have a more energetic or powerful sound to match the animation style! Characters/Plot The video is abstract, so I can only guess at the plot, but it seems to be about a girl who encounters creatures in her... See full review

Secret Santa Review

**At the time of writing this review, I have not totally finished the show**

Characters:
There are only a few characters; three cute looking fairies who don't do much other than have pointless conversations with each other. They do each have their own personalities, but they are rather generic and un-interesting. But their character designs are cute at least. The voice actors are fitting. Animation:
While it's not the worst CG ever seen in anime, it's pretty bad. Most of the basic fairies scenes are alright, however the 'imaginary' scenes, background scenery, and... See full review

Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories

Oct 4, 2013

Yamishibai, in theory, is the perfect show for me. Currently, I'm going through a horror phase and I can't get enough of creepy movies and shows. However, I also don't have a lot of time to sit though long series, so the short episodes are perfect for me. As soon as I found out about this show, I was pretty excited! Story/Characters Yamishibai is episodical; each episode is a stand-alone story based on a Japanese legend. None of the stories or characters are complex due to the length of the episodes, which has both good points and bad: Even with their short lengths, the stories are simple easy to... See full review

Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time

Aug 29, 2013

Plot: The cool thing about the story is, using time travel, this movie contains three Yu-Gi-Oh protagonists (from different series). It's a VERY cool plot idea that any Yu-Gi-Oh fan would be interested in. I thought it sounded awesome, and it was the only reason I decided to watch this movie. Unfortuately, the movie was poorly made. The plot is simple; a mysterious character from the future decides be wants to erase the Duel Monsters card game from history; so he decides to go back in time and kill Pegasus. Our three heroes band together to stop him and save their previous card game. Ta-da, that's it! The... See full review

Teekyuu 2

Aug 29, 2013

Teekyuu 2 is the same as the first season: A pile of crazy, random, fast-paced, nonsensical Japanese humor. There is no plot, no central themes, no character development, no nothing. This show is all about "how much randomness can we fit into 2 minutes" and then they play it at a high speed. Scenes are put together similarly to Lucky Star, but with some unrealistic and over the top situations thrown into the mix.
The only "funny" thing about this show is the speed of the voices/jokes/scenes, which flash by very fast. Unfortuately, the effect dies off by the second season so the 'joke'... See full review

Senyuu. 2

Aug 29, 2013

Story: Senyuu 2 starts off right after the first season, continuing its almost non-exsistant plot. The direction is never clear and is made a bit more confusing by splitting the characters into different groups. Because its a very short gag show, everything is done for a laugh, so you can't except much out of the story-line. It keeps hinting at story advancement, but progress only happens every few episodes. However, it does move at a faster pace than the first season, which is an improvement. Now that all the characters are introduced, the story is allowed to actually go somewhere and not waste as much... See full review

Aikatsu!

May 6, 2013

Story: The story revolves around an overly annoying girl named Ichigo Hoshimiya, and her friends, Aoi and Ran. The three of them enter Starlight Academy, a school for idols. They participate in Aikatsu (“Idol Activities”), and learn about the idol world. Nothing about this show’s episodes are very interesting or original. It’s very obvious from the start that the show is meant for little kids, and to sell a product. Turns out “Aikatsu Cards” are a thing in Japan, and this show is designed to promote them. Aikatsu Cards are trading cards, each with a part of an outfit on... See full review

Sakamichi no Apollon

Dec 28, 2012

Secret Santa Review  This is my review for Monthly Marathon Club's December event, where I was recommend (by Bluntjoker) three shows to finish by the end of Christmas. I picked this one because it was done by the same person who did Cowboy Bebop, one of my favorite anime, and I've been meaning to watch it since it came out.
As a heads up, I'm not a great writer. There are a few spoilers in this review (story section)   STORY The story, or lack there-of, was very simple. The new transfer student, Kaoru, becomes... See full review

X-Men

Jan 3, 2012

(First off, I think I should mention I'm a huge fan of X-Men and that
will probably affect my review.) Although I'm a huge X-Men fan, I couldn't get myself to enjoy this. And not for fanboy reasons like "OMG, it's not EXACTLY like the comic books!" (I will talk about this a bit though). My first complaint is the characters. They have a large cast of original characters with cool powers, but they don't use them. Scott and Emma are the main focus, while the others are secondary to them. I'm glad they didn't go overboard and introduce 20 mutants, but they could have made the characters they... See full review

Battle of Clay 2

Nov 15, 2011

This short is an absolute waste of time. The entire thing consists of two claymation figures playing some sort of weird game that involves hitting each other with a hammer. There is no plot, the only characters are poorly shappen clay men, and the sound is crap. Avoid at all costs, it's seriously not just "bad", but a waste of time.

Chainsaw Maid

Nov 7, 2011

Chainsaw maid is a grusome claymation that I really didn't enjoy. It tells a simple story of a group of zombies attacking a father, daughter, and their maid who protects them by killing all the zombies (via chainsaw). I don't like claymation, but it was effective because I was disgusted by the gory kills. Unfortunately, I found them a bit too gross to be enjoyable. Overall, a waste of time.

Tayutama -Kiss on my Deity-

Dec 30, 2009

In my opinion, Tayutama was one of the worst anime of the Spring 2009 season of anime. The plot begins with Yuuri, a loser high school student (*cough* Hideki, Keitaro, Keiichi *cough*) summons a goddess (Mashiro) who falls in love with with him quickly decides to marry him (which he has to do). It's up to them to battle the Tayutai, and protect the world, etc. Not the worst story in the world, but defiantly not that original for anime. Then the harem begins, with other blushing girls being thrown in: Ameri, Yumina, Mifuyu, and later Nue. So not much original here: Basic supernatural ecchi harem... See full review

Petit Eva [email protected]~

Dec 17, 2009

I just spent around the past hour watching all of the Petit Eva series. I kind of wish I spent it doing something else. Petit Eva is a random/comedy/parody/web series based of the Evangelion anime. Many of the characters from the tv series are in it, in the form of chibi CGI, including Unit 01. They're all students at a school; their teacher is Misato and Ikari is their principal. The short episodes consist of the cast doing random, and sometimes totally normal things. It's got a few smiles in it, but overall, not that great. I suggest only Eva fans check out a few episodes for fun, it's not worth... See full review

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Dec 15, 2009

When I finally got into the first season of FMA, I couldn't believe how great it was. It was already dubbed by this point (seemed I was one of the few who hadn't seen it yet), and I didn't quite believe the hordes of fans that had popped up (dub fans tend to drool over shows like Naruto >.>), but for some reason I picked it up anyway. I quickly ate through the episodes, realizing it just kept getting better and better. One of the best anime I've ever seen. Sora o Kakeru Shoujo

Dec 5, 2009

I began this show because I thought the animation was cute (their eyes), and I was bored. I really wish I spent it on another anime.        The character designs were cool, but none were really original. I didn't feel attached to any of the characters, and some I downright hated. The only one I cared slightly for was Leopard, but that's probably because I liked his voice actor (the character was usually a dick).        They had too many groups/characters/names being thrown around, which made the plot a little confusing and hard to follow... Asura Cryin'

Nov 9, 2009

Asura Cryin. Such major disappointment. For most of the first episode, this show looked interesting. It’s about a high school student named Tomoharu who lives with a ghost, that only he can see, that wou ld no doubt become his love interest. I don’t exactly know why, but I thought this was a neat idea and was looking forward to a good show. Boy, was I ever wrong. The episode went fine, (until the end), but after that hell breaks loose and suddenly there are secret organizations, mechas, people blowing up parts of Tomoharu’s house, women with rockets coming out of her their legs, demons...        This show takes place during a large scale war between Gallia and the Empire. It focuses on the people within Squad 7 (the main characters being Welkin, the captain, and Alicia, his second in command) of the militia. The episodes consist of battles or small pauses in between (that usually focus on character development). It shows various sides of the war, including the enemies’ view and shows what happens to the innocent people who are affected.        It’s similar to Full Metal Alchemist in the sense it’s military focused, with soldiers who... Nov 2, 2009

Basically, Saki is about a small high school Majong club. It's members are from various years and are almost all female (one guy, but he's usually ignored anyway). The show includes a team tournament (most of the show), an individuals tournament (squished into a few episodes at the end), and random fillers inbetween (training camp, swimming, etc.) Using Majong is quite original, although the plot is otherwise ordinary.       This is one of those shows that has TONS of characters. Tears to Tiara

Nov 2, 2009

Tears is a fantasy action series. However, when it began it was looking more like a harem. Every episode a new female came in. But it seems the writers eventually forgot they were writing a harem and made it interesting again.       The plot turned out okay, although it started off really slow. The second half had much more things going on, less useless episodes. Overall, it felt like some episodes were missing or rushed, but that could be because it was based off a large video game.      The characters were all generic and boring. Arthur... See full review

Sora no Manimani

Nov 2, 2009

Sora no Manimani is a basic highschool comedy. There's nothing really special about it at all. A guy, Saku, moves back into his hometown after about 10 years amd gets dragged into his highschool's Astronomy Club by an energetic and annoying childhood friend. The club is in poor shape with minimum members and almost zero funding. This, of course, doesn't stop their midly entertaining club activities (which usually just involve stargazing). By the end, not much is acomplished plot-wise and there is barely any character development.        The characters are... See full review

This is a music video done by CLAMP that features a bunch of their characters including those from xxxHolic, Tsubasa, Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knights Rayearth, Kobato, Chobits, Clover, Wish, Angelic Layer, X, and others. The plot, if you can even call it that, is the two Mokonas running around the different dimensions, running into all the characters. The animation is beautiful and the music is catchy, so it's a nice watch. A nice improvement over the first music video.        It is just a music video, so it's a bit hard to rate it. Dragon Ball Z Kai

Oct 20, 2009

Dragon Ball Kai is a rebroadcasting of Dragon Ball Z. Basically, they're reducing the show from 300 to 100(ish) episodes. They're cutting out 'fillers' and less important scenes to follow the manga closer. They've also re-recorded all the voices and touched up the animation. I loved this show so much when I was in grade school. Oddly enough, I still do! At the end of each episode I find myself excited for the next episode. I know everyone made fun of it after it finished airing, but I don't know why. Usually jokes poke fun at the screaming in the show, but that doesn't even happen till the Freeza saga... GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class

Oct 20, 2009

Oh god. I can still hear the opening. So darn catchy.        But that's about all that's memorable. It's cute and sometimes funny, but it's usually slow and boring. GA is about five girls and their normal lives in the GA art program at school (it's a slice of life comedy). I find it's a mix between Bottle Fairy and Lucky Star. Very cute and hyper characters who talk about random stuff (usually begins with art) and get insanely off-topic.        Since it's really slow and potentially boring, watching it all at once is not a great idea.
