100% Pascal-sensei (2017)

Jun 14, 2017

While 100% Pascal-sensei isn't a good show, I have to admit it's a decent show for kids, which is what it was designed for. The animartion is bright, the stories are outrageous, and the characters are ridiculous. Great qualities for a kid's show. However, for regular anime fans there isn't too much to enjoy. Story: The story follows the outrageous yellow mascot-looking teacher Pascal, and his class. They go on adventures together both inside and outside the classroom, usually caused by Pascal's over-the-top abilities and ignorance. I would almost say it's Assasination Classroom for kids; a crazy... See full review

A crow is white: fake!fake!

Jul 10, 2015

It is fairly hard to write a review of a music video, but I enjoyed "fake!fake!" so much, I'd like to try. A Crow is White is a Japanese pop band, and this is the music video for their song, 'fake! fake!'. Decent music, great art, this was super enjoyable! The song wasn't anything special, but the music video was bright, colorful, and interesting to watch. Sound Personally, I found the song, sung by 'A Crow is White', to be the weakest part of this video. The singer's voice is soft/generic and isn't very exciting. I'd love to have a more energetic or powerful sound to... See full review

Aggretsuko (2016)

Dec 18, 2016

Aggressive Retsuko is a very interesting and fun show. For a show with such a simple premise, it's surprising how fun, entertaining, and relatable it is. It's a must-watch for adults! I honestly look forward to this series every week. Its biggest flaw would be the repetitiveness of the episodes, there are over 50, which should have ended before it got too stale. Story This show is a comedic short form anime that is only one minute in length. It is about Retsuko, a red panda who works in accounting, and her frustrations with her job and co-workers. Other than the fact each... See full review

Aikatsu!

May 6, 2013

Story: The story revolves around an overly annoying girl named Ichigo Hoshimiya, and her friends, Aoi and Ran. The three of them enter Starlight Academy, a school for idols. They participate in Aikatsu (“Idol Activities”), and learn about the idol world. Nothing about this show’s episodes are very interesting or original. It’s very obvious from the start that the show is meant for little kids, and to sell a product. Turns out “Aikatsu Cards” are a thing in Japan, and this show is designed to promote them. Aikatsu Cards are trading cards, each with a part of an outfit on... See full review

Aikatsu on Parade!

May 9, 2020

Aikatsu on Parade is the MCU of the Aiaktsu world. It takes characters from ALL seasons of Aikatsu and puts them together, whether they were in the same universe or not, with an original main character to steer the story. While this sounds super fun, and don't get me wrong, it was, overall this show was a bit of a mess and a few major flaws made it unlikeable.

Animation Animation was fine, best in the franchise so far. Both the regular animation and especially the CG concert scenes have come a long way over the years. Sound

Aikatsu! Planet

Jul 19, 2021

Aikatsu Planet is part of a new genre of anime. The Space Jam of anime, if you will. A mix of both animation and live action scenes used side by side to tell one story. Since this is a bit of a weird situation, I think it would be more useful to divide up my review in different sections than usual. Before I begin, I just wanted to point out this is a stand-alone show that is not related to any other in the franchise, so it can be watched independently. Non-spoiler review! Story As a quick overview, in this world there are idols who do their idol activities ("Aikatsu") via an avatar... See full review

Aikatsu Stars!

Dec 30, 2016

Aikatsu Stars is a reboot of the Aikatsu anime franchise. It doesn't take place in the same "universe" as the other series, however it is still similar plot-wise. While I know this series isn't great, it's been a guilty pleasure of mine for years and I was looking forward to much needed upgrade. However, while it's an okay reboot, the series doesn't have any major improvements and still falls short of being a good show. You can watch this as a new standalone series, unrelated to the previous seasons. Story The story follows new student Yume as she enters Four Star Academy, a school for idols... See full review

Asura Cryin'

Nov 9, 2009

Asura Cryin. Such major disappointment. For most of the first episode, this show looked interesting. It’s about a high school student named Tomoharu who lives with a ghost, that only he can see, that wou ld no doubt become his love interest. I don’t exactly know why, but I thought this was a neat idea and was looking forward to a good show. Boy, was I ever wrong. The episode went fine, (until the end), but after that hell breaks loose and suddenly there are secret organizations, mechas, people blowing up parts of Tomoharu’s house, women with rockets coming out of her their legs, demons... Battle of Clay 2

Nov 15, 2011

This short is an absolute waste of time. The entire thing consists of two claymation figures playing some sort of weird game that involves hitting each other with a hammer. There is no plot, the only characters are poorly shappen clay men, and the sound is crap. Avoid at all costs, it's seriously not just "bad", but a waste of time.

Beyblade: Burst

Dec 18, 2016

After many years of not caring about the Beyblade franchise, I decided to try the newest one. I watched the original when I was young, and recently rewatched it again; I wanted to see how they shows compared! Turns out what I thought used to be cool characters and intense battles was actually dull stereotypes and  ridiculous spinning tops games. I might refer to the original series as that's what many people can related to. Story At the moment, I've only seen the first twenty episodes. So far, the story is a bit more simple than the original plot line (whic involved the mythical monsters trapped... See full review

Bonobono (2016)

Dec 18, 2016

This show is pretty bad. I can't even figure out who the intended audience is. Kids? Adults? No matter who it's for, this series' blandness is clear and there is little enjoyment to be found. While shows like this usually have at least a few good points based on who the intended audience is (example: If it's a a kid's show, it can get away with less structure and sillier situations), I could not find anything enjoyable about it at all. Story This show is a short form anime about a blue otter named Bonobono and his friends (a squirrel and raccoon). The episodes are about Bonobono's boring every day... See full review

Chainsaw Maid

Nov 7, 2011

Chainsaw maid is a grusome claymation that I really didn't enjoy. It tells a simple story of a group of zombies attacking a father, daughter, and their maid who protects them by killing all the zombies (via chainsaw of course). I don't like claymation, but it was at least parcially effective because I was disgusted by the gory kills. Unfortunately, I found them a bit too gross to be enjoyable. A case of 'gore to have gore'. Overall, even with it's short run-time, Chainsaw Maid isn't worth a watch.

Chi's New Address

Oct 5, 2009

Chi's New Address is what I would turn too if I was feeling sad. You can not watch this anime and not get a smile on your face. It's incredibly adorable. Chi, who is the young and curious kitten protagonist, sounds and looks so cute. As a big cat-lover I couldn't pass this show up. Story: Each episode is less than 5 minutes, which fits the light hearted and simpleness of the show. It's a slow but fun show about the mischief a small kitten can get into. And that's it. They don't try to over complicate things or have a complex plot. It's just pure, adorable entertainment for five minutes. Cat... See full review

CLAMP in Wonderland 2

Oct 21, 2009

This is a music video done by CLAMP that features a bunch of their characters including those from xxxHolic, Tsubasa, Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knights Rayearth, Kobato, Chobits, Clover, Wish, Angelic Layer, X, and others. While hard to rate, I overall enjoyed the video. The plot, if you can even call it that, is the two Mokonas running around the different dimensions, running into all the characters. Unlike the first music video, this one has a bit more flow between the scenes. The animation is beautiful and the music is catchy, so it's a nice watch. It is also a fun way to learn about CLAMP titles I... See full review

Dragon Ball Z Kai

Oct 20, 2009

Dragon Ball Kai is a rebroadcasting of Dragon Ball Z. Kai reduces the show from 300 to 97 episodes (with a final 61 episodes later). To do so, the studio cut out 'fillers' and less important scenes to follow the manga closer. They've also re-recorded all the voices and touched up the animation. I loved this show so much when I was in grade school. Oddly enough, I still do! At the end of each episode I find myself excited for the next episode. While it's often the butt of jokes here in North America, I think a lot of individuals would change their opinion if given the chance to re-watch this... See full review

Final Fantasy XV: Episode Ardyn - Prologue

Jan 2, 2021

A short related to FF15, this "prologue" shows bits of the origin story of the video game's antagonist, Ardyn. If you have not played the game, or do not plan on playing it, this is not worth watching. There is very view details given about the characters or setting to know whats really going on, so its more like a summary of some important scenes in Ardyn's life. It has minor spoilerse for FFXV, just because you don't know who the villain is right away, and his appearance in the game is releaved at the end. Forest Fairy Five

Feb 4, 2017

I'm usually not the type to very dramatic ratings on a particular series. I try to see the silver lining in anything by looking at the intended audience and what they're trying to accomplish. However there are no excuses here; this is probably the worst "anime" I've ever seen. Story There isn't a story to this series at all, although they waste almost four minutes every episode trying to make it sound like it does. This in itself is clearly a time filler and a waste of effort to mislead the audience into believing there is more substance to the show. After a simple opening... See full review

Forest Fairy Five: Fairy Tale

Jun 20, 2017

Forest Fairy Five: Fairy Tale is the second season of Forest Fairy Five, a show about five fairy girls who enjoy hanging out together. If you've read my review on the first season, you'd know I had very low opinions of it (I literally called it the worst anime I'd ever seen). While I don't think the quality of the show has gotten any better, I do think adding the 'fairy tale' aspect was a smart move and makes this the better of the two seasons. In fact, you could skip the first season and jump right into this one (not that I... See full review

gdgd Fairies

Dec 24, 2013

The one thing I'll give this show is that it is original and sometimes cute, but that's pretty much where my praise stops. Most of the time I had a hard time finishing a single episode. The slow and talkshow vibe of the show doesn't suit anime well. Luckily the episodes are short!
Characters:
There are only a few characters; three cute looking fairies who don't do much other than have pointless conversations with each other. They do each have their own personalities, but they are rather generic and un-interesting. But their character designs are cute at least. The voice actors are... See full review

Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle - Rhyme Anima

Jan 9, 2021

You may have stumbled upon this show while looking for a pretty-boy type show. Let me warn you now, you don't want to watch this. There are a ton of other shows who tried something similar and did it better. Liking anime boys is no reason to punish yourself with sub-par anime.  Story: By far the weakest point of the show, there is barely any plot and a rather stupid setting. It sets up in an alternative modern world Japan where women have taken control of the government and make it law that all weapons are now banned and everyone must solve their problems with rap battles. It literally makes no... See full review

Idol Ace

Sep 12, 2011

Idol Ace is nothing more than a preview for the manga of the same name. It actually feels like a flashback or a beginning of an episode, which stops short of actually telling us anything about the character or plot. It's possible to make interesting previews that make us want more, but this is not it. Skip and go straight to the manga.

Kenka Banchou Otome: Girl Beats Boys

Jun 21, 2017

Kenka Banshou Otome: Girl Beats Boys was one of the biggest disappointments for me this year. It was originally a romance otome game, now turned 10-minute episode anime. While it promised me a kick-ass girl in a mean delinquent school filled with good looking guys, almost everything in the series fell flat. The characters aren't fleshed out, there is barely a plot, and overally so many details are skimmed over it's like watching cliff notes for a better series. Luckily, at least the episodes are short. Story: The story is simple and sometimes vague. Girl runs into long lost twin brother... See full review

This is my review for Monthly Marathon Club's December event, where I was recommend (by Bluntjoker) three shows to finish by the end of Christmas. This is the first anime I've ever heard of where the anime is being aired LIVE from a studio. This was done using the idols/voice actors and body-tracking software. While I think this is super cool, it unfortunately doesn't work well, and this show was a mess. Animation/Sound The first thing I want to talk about is the sound and animation together, as this isn't a regular anime. This show is actually aired LIVE using one of those vocaloid CGI programs. While sections of the show are pre-recorded, many parts are actually filmed using the two voice actors as actors, who control their... See full review

Ninja Collection

Sep 17, 2020

Ninja Collection is a spin-off of the Yamishibai franchise, and is similar in almost every way except the story endings. It has short form, episodic horror stories, like spooky urban legends or campfire stories. It falls short of being actually scary, or even suspenful in many cases, however I don't feel like it deserves the hate it, and the rest of the Yamishibai franchise, gets. Animation First things first, we need to talk about the animation. Its always the first thing people react to, and always negatively. Obey Me!

Jan 23, 2022

Not going to bother with a super long review here, as ther eisn't much content to review. Obey Me is based on a "romance simulation and RPG card mobile game" about seven demon brothers who live together. Full disclosure, I haven't played the game, so I'm rating this as someone going in 'blind' to the franchise.  This specific anime series isn't a full anime. There is no plot, and each episode is more or less episodic. Even the episode format is inconsistant, as there is both a random chibi episode and a first-person episode tossed in that feel very out of place. Its mostly focused on... See full review

Parallel World Pharmacy

An Isekai that isn't horrible? They're a diamond in the rough. While this show doesn't do anything groundbreaking, by just being average and chill it stands out as being a heavily decent show, that I think is worth the watch.

Story So the base 'isekai' story is the same thing we've seen again and again. Man dies, gets reborn into a fantasy world with his memories intact, and his knowledge/abilities makes him exceptional in his new life. In this specific anime, he was a pharmacist and uses his memories of making medicine to help those around him, to the point of opening his own health... See full review

PriPara Movie: Minna Atsumare! Prism Tours

Feb 19, 2018

This PriPara Movie was not what I was especting at all. What I assumed would be a fun-filled original adventure with the current cast of PriPara turned out to be a mess of recycled clips and limited new material. Minimal effort was put into creating a plotline. It's not really possible to "spoil" this series, so I recommend giving this review a quick read before you try watching the movie, as you might also decide it's a waste of time. Story The very basic "plot" this movie has is the current cast of Pripara goes on a Prism Tour, which seems to be some magical train ride. After... See full review

Saki

Nov 2, 2009

Saki had potential if it had taken itself more seriously as a competative gaming anime. However, it ended up focusing a bit too much on on a huge cast of girls (fan service), without providing much depth to the plot or character development. It's similar to Girls und Panzer in this way. Too many tournament scenes and moe, not enough of anything else. (A series like Hikaru no Go is a good example of a decent gaming anime that focuses on characters and plot as much as the game scenes.) Plot: Saki is about a small high school Majong club. It's members are from various years and are almost all... See full review

Senyuu. 2

Aug 29, 2013

Senyuu 2 starts off right after the first season, continuing its almost non-exsistant plot. The direction is never clear and is made a bit more confusing by splitting the characters into different groups. It's not much of an upgrade over the first season and is frankly fairly boring. Story Because its a very short gag show, everything is done for a laugh, so you can't except much out of the story-line. It keeps hinting at story advancement, but progress only happens every few episodes. However, it does move at a faster pace than the first season, which is an improvement. Now that all the characters... See full review
