Forest Fairy Five

Feb 4, 2017

I'm usually not the type to very dramatic ratings on a particular series. I try to see the silver lining in anything by looking at the intended audience and what they're trying to accomplish. However there are no excuses here; this is probably the worst "anime" I've ever seen.

Story

There isn't a story to this series at all, although they waste almost four minutes every episode trying to make it sound like it does. This in itself is clearly a time filler and a waste of effort to mislead the audience into believing there is more substance to the show. After a simple opening song, each episode beings with a mini musical intro which then leads into a narrator explaining the world of fairies (parallel to our own) and the upcoming battle between the good and bad mushroom fairies or something similar. As I mentioned, none of this background fluff is referred to at all by the characters.

The actual episodes are laid out similarly to gdgd Fairies or Chokkyuu Hyoudai Robot Anime: Straight Title, but this time the main characters are five different mushroom fairies. There are two main parts to each episode: Babble and Education. The babble part is the characters just talking about nothing in particular and sounds like they don't even have a script (more on this later). The "education" part is when the fairies look through a portal to see the human world and learn something about it, although the actual "lessons" are pretty weak. The characters often babble again, and sometumes dance, after the educatonal part.

Nothing about the story is interesting or entertaining in the slightest.

Animation

This animation is TERRIBLE. It's a cheap CGI that has no place on television. I watched a scene where flowers were literally going through characters, like you'd see in a bad video game. The scenery often has flat textures and the character faces barely show emotion. Some of the worst anime animation I've ever seen.

Sound

The voice acting is so annoying. I've complained about the "live" voice acting before, and it's as bad as ever. Basically, it sounds like the voice actresses are sitting in a room talking to one another like a normal conversation. If you've ever seen a Japanese celebrity talk show, this sounds very similar. This might sound weird, but scripted shows have much more clean dialogue than in real life. The show doesn't seem to be a 'script' per se (just a general direction), so all the little 'mistakes' you hear in regular conversations are there (ex: awkward laughs and sounds). The audio also isn't great quality. I don't know why this type of voice acting exist for animation. It's like they record the voice first, then animate it later (very possible) so the voice actresses stumble through some of the conversations and it sounds very unprofessional. This show would automatically be better if the audio was recorded normally.

Characters

There are five female fairies who are eventually introduced throughout the series. They apparently each represent a different type of mushroom. They each also have one original quality. There is also a male narrator named "JoJo" who initiates conversation with the fairies. Overall, they're bland and forgettable characters.

I should also mention it's so awkward watching the fairies interact. The already mentioned bad animation and voice acting is a hard combination to watch. The characters face the viewer, and occasionally the other characters, but their eyes are so badly animated they never actually seem to look at the viewer or each other, which is unnatural to see.

Overall

It's obvious this is supposed to be a kids show, but it's bad even by kid-show standards. The educational segments are boring and don't teach anything really imporant. They even made the "mistake" of promoting clear skin to kids, like having bad skin was a negative thing (which is probably a Japanese thing. American cartoons try to avoid saying physical beauty is important).

I can't stress enough how much everyone should avoid this. It doesn't fall into the "so-bad-its-good" category, so don't try it for that. It's just 15 minutes of the most boring TV you've ever seen.

There are plenty of other shows that would be better for kids and aren't nearly as bad like Bottom Biting Bug or Goma-chan. These also have short episodes and have educational lessons, but have actual characters and plots.

If only I'd listened to this soul who sat through this show. It's every bit deserving of a 1 in all categories.
