1 Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

There's no anime that does it bigger and better than Gurren Lagann. The scale of this series shows amazing imagination and is coupled with a cast of interesting characters. Action and adventure never looked so good and anime has never left such an impact.

2 Food Wars! Shokugeki no Souma
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Souma

Food Wars will always be a particular favorite of mine as it combines two things I love; competitive cooking shows and shonen anime. Rediculous and awesome at the same time, there are few shows out there with as much originality.

Whether its with a sly wink or a guitar across the face, FLCL brings action and comedy that define the anime genre. Easily my most re-watched anime (easy to do with only 6 episodes), every time I watch this series I pick up on something I missed.

4 Toradora!

This was the anime that got me watching slice-of-life and romance anime. Even after revisiting it years later, Toradora still holds up in my mind as one of the best character-driven pieces. It's a legitimate love story.

5 From the New World
From the New World

While a lot of media has portrayed a post-apocalyptic world well, none have put chills down my spine quite the same way as this series. Nothing is as it seems and the realization of events is absolutely crushing at times. This is a show that is both a dream and a nightmare for anyone who likes to think critically.

6 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Often seen as the #1 anime in the World, Brotherhood tells a compelling story with plenty of action and intrigue. It stands above many series by having two very different but equally interesting main characters. Great concepts and conflicts raise this series even higher.

7 Baccano!

Were you watching closely? Baccano is beautifully made and has no issue taking viewers on a wild ride (and I'm not talking about the train). Jumping around to different characters in a non-linear story could be off-putting for some, but for the curious mind this is a masterpiece.

8 Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

While other mecha-based anime like to center around the giant robots, Code Geass elevates the game.  With a compelling story and sincere characters at its core, the Gurren,Lancelot and other mechas are really just nice additions. Then again, war tactics have probably never been shown so well as in a nightmare frame.

9 Eden of the East
Eden of the East

You'll need the movies to finish this piece of social commentary. This survival series is made all the more interesting thanks to its immediate plunge into mystery. See if the heroes of this anime can save Japan and the World with a cell phone.

10 Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun
Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun

Maybe a bit meta for some viewers, this anime shows what really goes on in the lives of content creators of a popular romance manga. The comedy is great and the characters grow more interesting as time goes on. It's a must-see for any fan of slice-of-life.
