The Garden of Sinners Movie 5: Paradox Paradigm

Jun 24, 2011

A "perfect" score is a very difficult thing to give, especially in this day and age where standards, expectations, and preferences are changing more rapidly than ever before. However I can give Mujun Rasen, the fifth installment of the Kara no Kyoukai film series, a perfect score without regret or doubt.     The film opens in a manner quite different from the style of the earlier movies. Where several of them start with mundane, almost tedious seeming activities and then later build up tension through shocking and/or disturbing turns of events, Mujun Rasen's beginning is heavy on both... Read or Die

Feb 18, 2011

My praise for Read or Die may be undeserved, but for its one and a half hour run time, it is executed in a way such that the laughs, tears, and dozens of jumps and shouts from the audience will be strung together in quick succession.   The plot leaves something to be desired in that it is somewhat incoherent, but despite any flaws it may have, it is twisty, dark, and cool enough to wow just about anyone. With three episodes, its obviously difficult to make a good set up for the series, but the first half of the first episode does so with startling effectiveness.   The animation, though it may... Nichijou: My Ordinary Life

Apr 7, 2011

Based on Episode 1   What happens when the worlds of cute girls doing cute things, robots, and ridiculous random humor combine? If you guessed Cromartie High or Azumanga Daiou, you are a little off. Nichijou caught me by surprise: with startlingly stupid humor and incredibly well done animation, I found myself wanting more immediately after. Anyone who is easily angered by random and completely trivial humor, this anime is not for you. If you thoroughly enjoy epic battles fought over octopus wieners or girl-like robots with steam powered rocket toes, this is absolutely for you.

When it... See full review

A Certain Magical Index

Mar 18, 2011

me•di•o•cre adj. -of moderate or low quality. -ordinary or so-so.     According to Merriem-Webster dictionary, mediocre can be defined by both of the above. When considering how to review this anime, this is the term that kept flashing before my eyes. After careful deliberation, I can say that this show was not mediocre, but mediocre nonetheless.   Index has a thrilling premise and a vivid universe; many interesting or unique characters are introduced throughout the plot (if you could call it that). Where this anime really falls short is in its execution... See full review

Black Rock Shooter OVA

Jan 30, 2011

I was not sure what to expect when I started watching Black Rock Shooter. I knew it had a decent following as far as artork went and I was familiar with the song bearing the same name. However, after watching for 50 minutes, I decided it fell somewhere between mediocrity and art.   While the first long while of the animation may leave some a little alienated (I came to see action, not slice of life!) I found it quite nice. The relationship between the two protagonists was quite well done, albeit a bit shallow. As we continue to witness their characters develop (at a snail's pace), we are greeted by... See full review
