This anime was really fun to watch. I first saw this show on cartoon network on adult swim a while back and even then it caught my eye.
I have watched it through twice since then and both times I found the illustrations reallypleasing to the eye.
The series puts a magical spin on the glory days of Alexander the Great's rise to power and vast territorial domination. The depictions of cities in Macedonia and Persia are highly agrandized with secret technologies that combine a unique mix of fantasy and midevil features that will amaze you visually and conceptually. The animation itself is also very unique and the characters' figures exaggerate the classic greek ideal of the body to which the series relates heavily. Most episodes are highly protagonist focused, which I liked beacuse it provided a look into life and human nature thematicly. The story is about how Alexanders uses his speed and experiance to explore the prophecy given to his mother that he will conqueror and destroy the world.
But although all events revolve around Alexander, the show is not about just his actions. The inclusion of historical icons like Pythagorus, Zoroaster, Aristotle and Diogenes, to name just a few, make this anime intresting to any viewers who are intrested in history, the classsics, sacred geometry, or ancient philosophies. Also the vast refrences to persian rulers, philosophers, religions, and gods make the series not just a great anime, but a potential side history project that resulted in me having several wikipedia pages open by the end of any given episode.
The sound didnt really stand out, i watched it in japanese with subtitles and i'd recommend it beacuse its fun to hear japanese people pronounce things like platohedron.
The show has alot of swift samurai-like plotting and killing done by Alexander, and several war front battles like in Berserk (another favorite anime of mine.) There are a few scenes where the animation is repetitive and almost all the footsoldiers look identical (possabily for a thematic reason.)
Every now and then there are bizarre dreams or visions, but if your're intrested in history and willing view them from an abstract point of view it they will be welcomeed by you.
Overall, It isn't a love story or a battle between good and evil like Berserk, but what it lakcs in male female relationships it makes up for with a more outside focus on the mysterious and infinate fields of the power of intellect, the supreme being, and ones own quest toword it.
