Some time ago I tried to watch Kaibutsu Oujo and I really didn't like it. I dropped it after one or two episodes. Lately I've been into reading manga and I decided to give the Kaibutsu Oujo manga a try. Surprisingly the manga is actually pretty good.
I got the impression that the anime differs a lot from the manga. Maybe, just maybe I'll force myself to watch the anime to have a better grasp of how much those two differ.
The manga provides a nice twist on the wimpy protagonist character theme. Protagonist's combat abilities are pretty much nonexistent, so what use could he have in a fight? He actually makes himself useful by dieing in the female lead's stead. Later on in the manga he even does some fighting right once or twice (for instance when he goes wild with a pitchfork). Even though he could be called an epitome of uncoolness, there is also Buchi who prevents the protagonist from becoming the lamest character in Kaibutsu Oujo.
The manga has lots of great reference jokes. The author borrows ideas from all kind of books, movies, fairy tales, comic books, lore and urban legends. The funniest thing in the whole manga so far was the Totoro reference.
The gore gets slightly toned down after the first few chapters (the protagonist will stop losing his limbs) which is perfectly fine by me (it was getting on my nerve to be honset). The manga could do with less ecchi (namely Reiri's pantyshots), but it's not like it's overflowing with them.
Edit: Oh my, the first episode is so bad. It's really slow, boring and Hiro is even bigger wimp than he is in the manga, not to mention the animation is poor. If all episodes are like this I don't think I'll be able to sit through more than one of them... Well the BGMs seem ok and they have Rotte on TV lol.
Edit: I watched two episodes of the OVA and I have mixed feelings about them. The pace is ok, the action sequences are quite good and so are the BGMs, but VAs and the script are so so. Not to mention the CGI monsters in the first episode are really ugly.
I skimmed through some of the episodes of the TV series and I can say that the manga is way better than the anime.
