Back when I watched FMP anime I thought it was great. When I watched TSR I thought it was even better. When I tried to rewatch the first season I found out that it wasn't all that great (beyond the first arc). On the other hand I still considered TSR one of the best anime I've seen.
Unfortunately do to some copyright\licensing issues no other attempts to adapt the novels into anime were made (except for fumoffu, but that doesn't cover any of the actual story). I really wanted to start reading the novels, but those were simply unavailable. I learned only recently (or at least totally forgot about it earlier) about the manga adaptation, so I started reading it just yesterday. I must say I'm quite impressed with it so far. At first I felt it was inferior to TSR, but after the part featured in TSR has ended it got really good. I mean the story gets really serious and starts to feel more mature (shounen manga starts turning into a senien one). The best thing about this manga is character development for instance Sagara actually becomes mature (and he isn't the only character that evolves). I like the way they pushed the romance part forward. I mean, I was worried that the author will just keep the status quo (Chidora-Sagara-Teletha love triangle), but there is quite a lot of progress instead (I won't go into details to avoid spoiling). Last but not least, I like how they connected the alternative history\world to the real one.
There was a thing that bothered me though. How do those fanservice covers, under cover images and chapter title images relate to the story. Those felt out of place next to the serious tone of the story.
I wonder if the novel is even better than the manga.
P.S. I would never expect myself to say such thing, but those people showing the middle finger in this manga were awesome while doing so.
