Attack on Titan

May 11, 2014

Well, the story and the world are interesting, and I'm dying to know what this world is, but the 8 or so hours of season 1 do little to explain it to me, so all the yakking about what to do or not do and all the shouting about mistrust and honor, not to mention endless fight scenes and grim deaths just annoyed me to have to sit through it.  So I'm compelled by my desire to resolve the mysteries, but only get battles and strategy for 8 hours...  I will like the show better when my questions start getting answered, until then there is much resentment for time wasted.  The characters and art are... Cowboy Bebop

Jun 30, 2012

Cowboy Bebop excelled in mood, style, atmosphere, but ultimately, for me, lacked in story.  Some of the stories did keep me interested, especially looking into the pasts of our characters, or some of the particularly weird ones, but often I was bored.  Well, one difference between me and some of the rest of the world - I'm not a big fan of action sequences, shoot-em-ups, or cool posturing, although cool posturing can be, well, cool, at the very least. The shining point for this series is the music.  It was consistently a joy to hear what awesome or unusual musical track was running in the... See full review

Elfen Lied

Jun 2, 2012

I wanted to see a cool anime featuring worthwhile female characters, and I like dark, twisted, psychological tales (not that that's all I like.)  I wanted to like this.  Sadly, it didn't happen for me. The elements are all there for a good little gothic sci-fi horror story.  It just never fleshed itself out enough for me to get interested.  Occasionally a bit of flashbacking would add depth and character development.  I found the characters likeable (though I confess I begin to wonder if I just have a prejudice in favor of black hair and blue eyes) but never felt sufficiently... Glass Mask (2005)

Jun 16, 2012

I was led to Glass Mask mostly because I was looking for another rivalry story like the one in Hikaru no Go, and this was recommended on Anime Planet's Hikaru no Go page.  Also, while I had no previous knowledge of Go, I am a lifelong theatre professional, so this would be more of my own world. In the end, after 51 episodes, the rivalry between Maya and Ayumi - though it mirrored that of Hikaru and Akira - it failed to live up to the same degree of oomph.  For 51 episodes, I willingly suspended my disbelief about so many aspects of theatre.  "If you don't get this right on the first... Hikaru no Go

May 30, 2012

75 episodes.  I watched the Japanese version.  I have heard some of the English dub and can say -- watch the Japanese version.  The Japanese cast is fantastic - the English language version not so much.   STORY - Very compelling right from the start.  Having read the reaction of many others who have immersed themselves in Hikaru no Go, I must warn you not to get involved in this until you have 25 hours solid to watch this show, because you will not be able to stop yourself from pressing through to the end, and then you will probably want more.  I have read this story... Polar Bear Cafe

Jun 13, 2012

Okay, so far I've only watched 7 of the 10 episodes that are out so far, but I think I am getting enough of the gist.  It is possible that over time the quality will diminish, but I will take my chances and write this premature review. Basically I want to know what drugs these guys are on, because I want some. Story - each story is simply a premise, a situation for the writers to dig out some comic gold. There are some through-lines, but there is no overriding plot so far.  It's very refreshing to tune in to.  This is a comedy, and more often than not, the gags are so over-the-top, they... The Flowers of Evil

May 14, 2014

Loved it.  It took me until after episode 6 to really start to figure it out, in a world somewhere between reality, angst & melodrama, and metaphor, and it all works really pretty great together.  Music and anime was "just a bit off" and pretty creepy, like these characters.  I didn't mind the long, slow sequences, I liked them, even, but I did get annoyed with too many slow-turning heads and too much unbroken tension from the main character and does he fall to his knees and scream in tears enough in this show?  Haha.  It got so so good after about 6 or 7 episodes...
