I am 38 and I've never thought much of manga or anime before.  However, I recently happened onto Death Note, and got so powerfully sucked in by the entire franchise.  Curious about the genre, I moved on to Hikaru no Go and I think I love it even more than Death Note.  These two series have possessed me beyond anything I could have guessed, and from inside the muck of new fangirlism I wonder - did I just happen onto the two most gripping and possessing stories of all time, or is there some mysterious qualities about the genre that possess your soul and don't let go?  Is my passion for it real or fleeting?  I don't know. Some day when I am ready I'll move on to another story or two and maybe one day I'll know.

Hello!  sothis is redesigning the anime-planet site, and plans to roll out an awesome new site design in July, we believe. The blog feature is not part of the new design, and it is going away.  More information about this here:  Announcement: the blog feature is being deprecated topic link.  (Be sure to check out the new site design when it goes live!)

The blog pages are going away, and will be gone when the site redesign goes live. Your blog here will be removed from the site.

So, if want to keep the information posted in your blog, you will need to copy this information someplace else on the site. If you have any questions how or where to do this, please feel free to get back to me, and I will try to assist.

Unfortunately, you haven't seen the best of anime at all. Not until you've seen Monster. As has already been said below.

If you're into tense political-historical sci-fi, then the absolute best anime has to offer is undoubtedly Legend of the Galactic Heroes. But welcome to anime - never too late to discover it's wonders!

Thanks for the comment! The email notification reminded me I have an AP account, haha. I have always been crap at giving numerical ratings, but the words are The Real Deal as far as my opinions go. Glad you got a chuckle regardless!
