Ergo Proxy

on Dec 15, 2015

SECRET SANTA 2015 REVIEW Minor spoilers and opinions abound. Read at your own risk. I wanted to like this. I really, really did. I greatly appreciate the thought my Secret Santa put into the recommendations, and I can't fault their reasoning at all. But alas, Ergo Proxy, despite looking like something that would be up my alley, what with it being a cyberpunk title focusing on shadowy plots, did not manage to catch my interest at all. It's certainly not a bad show, but it was a disappointment. To me, it faltered in the execution, and there's not much you can do to about that. In hindsight, I... read more

Walkure Romanze

on Dec 22, 2013

Walkure Romanze   Because of my general antipathy towards most things based on visual novels, especially those of the harem variety, I do not watch much of the stuff. Sometimes I wonder if I should try and watch more to see if my negative disposition is unwarranted or not. These moments of weakness usually fade, but this season I decided to pick up a few, lured by the promise of communal mocking and tearing them apart each week together with my peers. One was the abysmal Diabolik Lovers, the second was this piece of schlocky ecchi.   Based on the pornographic harem visual novel of the same... read more

Diabolik Lovers

on Dec 10, 2013

Straight after the appallingly bad Brothers Conflict comes a new reverse harem. Happy happy joy joy. Will this manage to be better than BroCon, and perhaps even rise to the level of 'almost tolerable'? Hah, fat chance! This irredeemable pile of excrement is the story of a young woman being surrounded by young vampire guys that are hellbent on making her life as miserable as possible, and nothing else. It's basically your regular harem show, but with a colossal heap of domestic abuse added to help separate it from its ilk. The setting is about as cliché as they come, and there is nothing new to be had... read more

RahXephon

on Jul 30, 2013

I'd been meaning to watch this show for years, and finally a buddy group came along, and I eagerly joined that. I knew people compared it to the much-discussed  Neon Genesis Evangelion, but frankly, I just expected a cerebral mecha show. Instead, I got to watch an incredibly boring, tedious and underwhelming anime about a group of incredibly uninteresting characters and a mysterious mecha with fugly wings on its head. Riveting stuff. Really.

While I can see some similarities between the two: like a rather convoluted plot, emotionally unstable characters, unorthodox mecha designs, themes... read more

Brigadoon Marin to Melan

on Dec 23, 2012

SECRET SANTA 2012 REVIEW   I got this (along with two other anime that I never got around to watching in time) recommended to me by my Secret Santa. I've been meaning to watch it for a while, and now I got the final push that I so desperately needed. And without further ado, let's get on with the review.   It is 1969, in an alternate Japan, although this isn't made clear until several episodes in. Another world, the eponymous Brigadoon, has suddenly appeared over Earth. Our heroine, the orphan girl Marin, finds an ampoule, which is kind of like a pokéball, except it's actually the mon... read more

Angel Beats!

on Dec 23, 2014

SECRET SANTA 2014 REVIEW   Angel Beats is one of those shows that seem to be almost revered that I rarely get around to watching, but Anime-Planet's Secret Santa 2014 even provided an excellent opportunity.   Like many other reviewers have noticed before me, Angel Beats is a Key-ified Haibane Renmei, with almost the entire cast consisting of high school students in a mysterious world that's very much an idyllic version of a Japanese high school campus. People get sent there after death, but the reason why is at first a mystery. It's an okay enough idea, but it feels far too much like your... read more

RDG: Red Data Girl

on Dec 21, 2013

Secret Santa Review   Before I start, I would like to mention that this review will most likely contain spoilers. If you do not want this show to be spoiled for you, then read no further.   There, now that that's out of the way, let's start the review proper. This supernatural slice of life drama had been on my radar since it aired, but I never got around to watching it until I got it recommended by my Secret Santa.   It starts out quaint enough, introducing us to the female lead, Izumiko, that lives on a very pretty mountan with her odd guardians, what with her parents being else where... read more

Beyond the Boundary

on Dec 18, 2013

This was apparently an entry that got an honorable mention (no winners...) in some kind of contest for light novels held by Kyoto Animation. If this got animated over the other entries, it makes you think how bad the rest must have been. Seriously, this was one of the worst stinkers of Autumn 2013 for me, and it had some stiff competition.   The show stars Mirai and Akihito, two boring persons surrounded by other, equally boring persons. They attend highschool and Akihito has a glasses fetish, while Mirai is a clumsy person with glasses that tries to kill him all the time. Good thing (no, not really)... read more
