Fall Anime 2010 - Impressions (Part 1)

30 OCT

As we all know, this season features a lot of shows, with a huge variety of genres, thing that will satisfy in my opinion all the audiences. I seen most, if not all the shows that are currently airing, and i already made an image, impression about a few of them, so here it is:

~ Note: This might contain spoilers! ~

Otome Youkai Zakuro (Demon Maiden Zakuro)

If there is a show this season that impressed me the most, then this one is it. Otome Youkai Zakuro begins in a royal way, a nice incantation with a good choice of words, an action sequence followed up by a bloody attack and the fabulous words "You're always welcome". This show from the begining it proved to be worth and interesting, with that kind of a begining i doubt that someone could say it's shit. The story focuses on humans coexisting with spirits, in this case youkai's. Three military officers were sent to aid the Ministy of Spirit Afairs which featured 4 reprezentatives being half human, half youkai, Zakuro, Susukihotaru, Bonbori and Houzuki which were partnered with the three officers, Agemaki, Riken and Ganryuu. Their mission is to try and coexist toghether and face both human and spirit issues toghether. This show has a little bit of everything, hilarious comedy, at times melodramatic, few but awesome action sequences and mystery aspects as well. One thing is for sure, this show is more than it meets the eye.

Yosuga no Sora - In Solitude

Being experienced with shows that adapt an eroge visual novel, i couldn't leave Yosuga no Sora untouched. From some previews, from the manga, and some images i made an image about it. At first, i thought that it might be an average harem show, having a boy in the center of attention, somehow he could make all the girls fall for him (Da Capo anyone?) without even realizing, making a fully-fledged harem. However the first episode proved that there is more to it. Not only that he makes all the girls fall for him, he also has an apparently incestuous relationship with his sister as well (another Da Capo references with the difference that they were not related by blood). Later i realized that this one will actualy be in an omnibus format (like Amagami SS) featuring the male lead dating (and doing more) with every female lead. What can i say? Expect some serios drama moments, don't expect comedy from this one otherwise you will be dissapointed and...i think that's it. Maybe for most of the people, stuff like these are not that amazing nor intriguing, but for me this is definitly my cup of tea!

Psychic Detective Yakumo (Shinrei Tantei Yakumo)

Yet another show that i had high expectations from it and i received what i wanted maybe even more, Psychic Detective Yakumo might prove to be the bombshell of this season depending on how it will end and how it will develop. At first i was somehow convinced that this will follow an episodic plot, featuring the main lead Yakumo resolving cases by using his special power, to communicate with ghosts and spirits. However when i saw that the bond between him and the girl who came up with a task for him Haruka, starts to get deeper and to develop and also the sudden appearence of an unknown antagonist, i quickly realized that this won't follow an episodic plot. Yakumo is the typical Light Yagami type of character, stoic, inteligent and with an apparently bad personality. This show however features an aspect that will make you yearn for more, its suspance aspect, present at the end of each episode. All in all this show began in an awesome fashion, i have no complaints regarding animation and sound, since we talk about Bee Train here (Noir, Madlax, Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~, El Cazador de la Bruja, Mein Liebe) if there is one thing they do in a perfect manner, that is the animation and the soundtracks.

Hakuouki Hekketsuroku

I honestly fell in love with the first season of this show titled Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan so for me, the most awaited direct continuation (not sequel) was this one, Hakuouki Hekketsuroku. This show presents the story of a girl named Yukimura Chizuru and her encounters and relations with the leaders of the Shinsengumi, a group of rounins fighting for the shogunate in a period when Japan started to make contacts with the western civilization and is about to change its destiny. This show actualy has a lot of historical references (infact this year i can say that 2 anime shows focuse on 2 important points of Japan's history, this which depicts the end of the shogunate and the begining of the Meiji Era and Senkou no Night Raid which depicts the Manchurian invasion in 1931), except Chizuru and the oni's who do not appear in historiography (hell they would) names like Hijikata Toushizou, Okita Souji, Harada Sanosuke, Nagakura Shimpachi, Todou Heisuke, Kondo Isami, Inoue Genzaburo, Shimada Kai, Yamazaki Susumu or Sannan Keisuke existed in reality and left a mark on Japan's history. The second season this time takes place not in Kyoto but in Edo (Tokyo), since the Shinsengumi have been defeated in the battle of Toba-Fushimi (also recorded in history). A great deal of melodrama, cool action sequences, mysterious appearences and events and a very unpredictable plot, this is what characterizes Hakuouki, those that watch this show are in for a feast, the show also featuring amazing art, animation quality and directing and very listenable soundtracks. If there is a show that worths to be continued, then this one is it, it MUST NOT be missed!

Hyakka Ryoran Samurai Girls

Ok, here we have an interesting show with an unique plot presentation. I know, the first thing that could come up to your mind is an Ikkitousen wannabe but slightly different. Of course, many characters from this show have names of historical figures and the feudal setting of this show makes this aspect even more obvious but the thing that makes the difference is the presentation, We do not talk about Feudal Japan in Hyakka Ryoran Samurai Girls we speak about Japan in a contemporan timeline, which never opened herself to the world, which remained in isolation and the shogunate wasn't abolished. The story centers on a 16 year old boy Yagyu Muneakira. One day his life is turned upside down by the sudden appearence of a mysterious girl, called Yagyu Jubei. What's the secret behind her appearence? Why Muneakira was sent to meet with other characters such as Sanada Yukimura or Gotou Matabei, Senhime or Hattori Hanzou? (these names so reminds me of Samurai Deeper Kyo) And more importantly who is ploting the events in this show? Those that watch this show should expect, a few but cool action sequences alongside with some fan-service aspects (i seriously hate censorship!) comedy aspects and the development of a romance aspect.

Fortune Arterial - Akai Yakusoku (Red Promise)

Another show that adapts an eroge visual novel, but unlike Yosuga no Sora, this one does not have an omnibus plot type, and it isn't so explicit however the aspects of an anime inspired from an eroge visual novel remain, the sudden appearence of a male protagonist, in this case Hasekura Kouhei that attracts the attention of several girls (Kiriha Kuze, Kanade Yuuki, Haruna Yuuki), making his own harem without even realizing, this is what describes Fortune Arterial as a whole except a small detail. The vice-president Erika Sendou and her brother Iori Sendou are actualy vampires, and no I'm not kidding. You can actualy predict that he will get caught up this story. Until i heard about this detail i thought that this might be another Da Capo wannabe so I'm actualy hoping that I can see something a little bit different than the typical romantic harem shows inspired from visual novels. This must definitely have a happy ending otherwise I will really shoot the author of this between his eyes!

Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai (OreImo)

Yeah, an anime in which the characters talk about anime. No, the world revolves around anime, and anime related stuff, thats what describes OreImo, in a short way. I didn't made high hopes for this one, but i was expecting something that would make me smile at least, so far it did. People actualy say that i am a freak when they see my knowledge regarding anime and my list but one thing is for certain, i cannot be compared with this abnormal girl. Having no friends which share the same passion as she does, Kirino drags her brother Kyousuke in the otaku world by making him play eroge visual novels and other stuff. From this point on, the drama starts, even though she wants to meet people that share her passion, she doesn't want her actual friends to know about her passion since her passion is seen with bad eyes by the public, including by her family. As i said, i don't have much expectation from this one, and i really don't expect it to surprize me in any way. Decent until now, funny in some ways, hope it pulls a nice ending for this show. The animation is not bad and the sound as well, common for every average anime.

Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto

Whoever knows me, they are aware that i am not really a fan of mecha shows, even though i enjoyed watching a few like Code Geass, Heroic Age, The Third, Kannazuki no Miko, Macross Frontier, Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari, Burst Angel and a few Gundam Series/Movies. However, Star Driver does not resume only at its mecha aspect but also it features harem influences (you don't need to be so amazed, only by glancing at the pic you can realize what im talking about) and apparently, a love triangle. It all begins when a mysterious boy, Takuto arrives on a small island (actualy i was like wtf when he said that he actualy swam all the way to the island because he missed the last boat) and he was saved by the South Maiden, Wako Agemaki and her fiance Sugata Shindou. Without knowing (or being aware, don't know for sure) he gets dragged into a battle with the Glittering Crux, their obejctive is to defeat Takuto and his mech, Tauburn and the one who does that shall become the leader of the organization. Somehow this show seems a little bit episodic since each episode ends in the same manner. However this show should not be taken lightly, Aniplex and Bones invested a lot of money in it so i seriously doubt that it would be low voice in this Fall 2010 anime season. The only thing i could complain here is regarding the character design, which is not really to my liking.
